Nice one :) going to be fun :)
as much as i like mc coy...the stallone version was good...well from looking at the trailer. From what i have read of 2001AD i thought stallone got it al-right, bit to much comedy value but still a kick ass film, and TBH a lot of people i know play the the RPG game have said the 1995 film, although devoid of acting was close to the comic script
Agreed, the original film was very close to the film in visual style and how Megacity One was portrayed. That beings aid it wasn't dark and gritty enough for me. It was Goldeneye to Casino Royal. This looks good but trailers can often make rubbish look great, so I'll wait for some reviews.
I have a briefcase full of old judge dread comics somewhere.
That doesn't impress me in the slightest.
Paul Verhoeven should get a go at Judge Dredd, he'd make an awesome movie.
The 1995 Stallone film was an amusing action film, but it wasn't Judge Dredd. The bubble burst minutes in when Stallone took off his helmet. Dredd NEVER took off his helmet. It left the rails from that moment on. From what I've read Karl Urban has read the comics. Karl Urban (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0881631/) has confirmed that the helmet will never come off to keep true to the comic book character.
A better comparison is that this version of "Dredd" is to the 1995 "Judge Dredd" what the Daniel Craig Casino Royal was to 1967 David Niven Casino Royale (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061452/).
The "Dredd Vs Death" PC game was created by Rebellion Studios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebellion_Developments) (Sniper Elite 2) who bought the 2000AD Comic in order to (a) get all the story rights and (b) get a second revenue stream..
The helmet removal was a huge compromise to the original story, but it was never going to happen that an A list Hollywood film star would spend the whole movie with his face obscured. plus the film couldn't just cater for 2000AD fans as it would have never made it's money back unless it pitched to a much wider audience. I do think the film captured the visual style of the comic, which is my main point. The film looked like the stories I had read as a kid. The uniforms, architecture, Lawmsters, Lawgivers, vehicles etc etc were pretty accurate. Even the Angel Gang, although completely wasted in the film, were more or less correctly depicted. The film itself also followed a story line from the comic. However it did mess with the story and overall the film was far too cheesy and never captured the real feel of the original. So while artistically it was good, narratively I agree it was pretty pants and for any 2000Ad fan was a pretty disappointing.
It looks like the new movie is going a different way. It doesn't look very much like the original but seems to be much darker and with more atmosphere.
So, has anyone been to watch this?
I went on Tuesday afternoon, & well, It's Dredd, simple as that really.
Worth a watch.
I have been thinking about going to watch this, one of my friend enjoyed it so much he's seeing it again tomorrow! Hmm decisions...
I really want to go see this, I've heard really good reviews about it and that its a bit more in-tune with the 2000 AD dredd, than the stallone attempt.
I enjoyed it ! Good fun and violent...its dread basicly :D
It was great fun, far more how I saw Dress. Through the visuals and style I kept thing the director would good to do a live version of Akira. True it would be heresy but his style might work.
