Title: EU Rules Digital Games Can Be Resold
Post by: Snokio on July 04, 2012, 08:31:47 PM
Finally!

In a nutshell: '
Well here’s some pretty huge news. The Court Of Justice of the European Union has just ruled that people should be able to resell downloaded games'

'The new ruling from the EU bring huge implications for the digital download stores such as Steam, GamersGate and Origin, who will now need to provide a method of being able to administer the reselling of the games we purchase when needed'

I (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/03/crikey-eu-rules-you-can-resell-downloaded-games/) sense there is a get out clause or some other way around this :g:

The get out clause I think they might try to go for is a lease ownership style of sale.  Much a like people view a long lease as the same as freehold, a long period of ownership might satisfy the court's interpretation of a 'license not being sold indefinitely' and therefore the rightholder “would not exhaust his exclusive distribution right”.

Great, so now they'll charge us more for the lost additional sales that a seondary market might theoretically bring *and* we'll only get to long-term rent the games instead of owning them.

The worrying alternative to that scenario is that they move to a subscription model where you buy the software and can re-sell it, but to actually use it you need to have an active subscription.

Either way gives them more money.  I think I'm getting ever more interested in a pad of A4, a pencil and a game of noughts & crosses

Might I interest you in a game of Shogi Tealeaf? The board plus pieces in plastic cost about 30 quid and will last a lifetime.
Takes about 10 min to learn, 10 games to understand, a life time to master :)

No need to ever buy a (digital) game, ever again! :flirty:
