I need to buy a Black & White printer to use to print emails etc just not sure what one....I dont really want a printer that has colour but dont mind if it comes to that just wanted some advice really on what is a good cheap printer where the ink is reasonable aswell any ideas?
Most ink jet printers around the £35-40 mark are pretty decent. I think they get sold close to cost in the hope we'll agree to get robbed by the extortionate cartridge prices they then charge.
My only advice would be buy a brand that you recognise i.e. Canon, HP, Epsom, Brother etc and most importantly make sure to get one that uses a dedicated black ink cartridge rather than mixing the three colours together to make black. It will work out much cheaper to just buy black ink rather than three colours. Other than that just go for any bargain price you see.
I'm guessing it depends on the amount you're going to print & timescale.
I quite like my Brother Black & White laser printer, cheap toners & quick jobs & they can be picked up for around £50 :).
Bought a used a Laserjet 2055DN printer off the dk equivalente of ebay, prints like a dream, cartridges are a little expensive, but they last thousands of pages ;)
For black and white only laser is your best bet in terms of cost efficient printing.

Thanks for the advice guys went for a HP Laser printer with cheap toner replacements.
Which model did you get?
HP LaserJet 1020
I went for a Samsung ML2010R a few years ago. It was £37 delivered at the time. I thought what was the worst that could happen? It's still going strong on it's original cartridge. I don't print a lot. I've probably only gone through two reams of paper since I got it, but I know in a similar amount of time I'd have gone through 3 ink jet cartridges because they tend to dry up on me between prints.
Laser was the best printing choice I ever made even though I use it less and less these days.
Oh well, late to the party again.
This Brother HL2130 (http://www.viking-direct.co.uk/a/pb/Brother-HL2130-Mono-Laser-Printer/pr=Q28&id=5587668/) laser is cheap at £35.99 and has quite good write ups.
it was'nt much over that refills cost 8quid so pretty happy I dont print much either and I know from past experince the cartridges last for ages.
I usually not much of a HP man myself, but their laserjets are awsome, we got a old Laserjet 4600, which just hit 1.000.000 printed pages, and still going strong.. sturdy beasts they are..
Brother laserjets im no fan of, their fixation units tend to die after 10.000 pages, (which isnt much for a business printer)
Canon fair, but their drivers for print servers are daft, and can really mess about on a print server.
(i know most of this info isnt focused at home usage, but it does give good indicators of stability, and ease of use)
I've actually got a HP Laserjet printer in the garden but i doubt it will work as its most likely water logged but that had good use out of it and the toner ink lasts for ages and yes their build to last.

dont be to sure, we had a couple of Laserjet 1320 standing in a basement on one of our locations, when it got flooded, we just brough it in, picked it appart, and let the stuff dry for a week in a dry room, one is still running strong :P
