Due to not having alot of money and in need of a dire upgrade I have been recently been looking into AMD chips. Having installed the 4x 6x cores in other computers my own impressions have been pretty good. This is just a thread to see if anyone else has a AMD as I know alot of you have Intel chips and before I make any sort of jump to AMD anything I should know? I plan buying the new FX-8 Bulldozer which is apperently very fast compaired to the i7 I was looking at previously, I know I will be missing out on hyperthreading and stuff but will it make much of a difference?

Still a long loving AMD fan, sad to say that Intel is just on top on the high end market atm..
Tho AMD still making some nice bits and pieces, and the new APU chips are nice enough, knowing a few thats built systems with em
First PC I ever had was a custom built containing an AMD DX2-80 chip (same price as the intel DX2-66), next was an intel Pentium 166.
Since then I've built all my own PC's and every one has had an AMD chip and lasted the course and always given that little extra bang for your buck as long as you don't mind them running a little hotter than intels.
Quite a few on here ran the Athlon XP's overclocked for long time.
I've used AMD chipsets for the past two rigs I've built and they stand the test of time without breaking the bank, never given me any problems other than that not sure what else I can say
Bulldozer has been a pretty bad flop. Even the new chips score low against the i7's which is a shame as Intel can charge what they want for chip while there is no competition. Depends how you benchmark them and what you want to use them for.
Until about 7 years ago I was always AMD but they went downhill from the Core2 onwards where Intel were king. Sad days.
From my experience with AMD it is always "Best price for bucket".
The latest FX structure was not that great tbh. They compared the performance of FX with Intel 2500K.
Maybe because the 8-cores are not fully supported yet in Windows 7 (Even though they patched it with 2 hotfixs and the performance gain was about 3 - 5%)
But.. this cpu is a real monster for coding/decoding stuff.
I'm currently using FX-8150 OC with H100 on Asus CSV and I'm happy with it.
It is really fun to OC and tweak it at least for me.
At the end, If you like tweaking and moding with a good price, this CPU will be good (even for gaming).
If you want something real fancy but a bit expensive, check out the new line of intel (Ivey Bridge).
I've always gone for the processor which seems better value for money so in the early days I got hand me down processors 486s and alike, I didn't have much choice. The first PC I bought where I had a choice I went AMD. The next several were too all the way up to a 4200-X2. That was one of the first dual core 64bit processors out, it felt ahead of the curve. It's still going strong too.
Since then I've stuck with intel though. A Q6600 and an i7, both of which have been overclocked, 3.33GHz and 4.4GHz respectively and it was so easy I didn't even really need to do much at all they're such easy overclockers (plenty of advice out there).
Anyway, the easy overclocking is one thing that got me to stick with Intel the other was every time I bought a new CPU with AMD I had to buy a new motherboard since they were changing their chipsets so frequently. I'm not sure if that still happens, but it's reassuring to know if something in your computer goes you'll be able to find replacements without buying a new machine, and if a new chip comes out that's really good it can fit into an old machine. I didn't get that with AMD.
Just bought an overclocked AMD bundle from OcUK for my missus, should be here next week.
I'll give you an update after I test it. However, AMD always wins in "bang for your buck" comparisons.
