Title: Want BF3 in colour? That's cheating - DICE will ban you!
Post by: ArithonUK on October 04, 2012, 10:06:56 AM
DICE have threatened to BAN Origin accounts of anyone running a colour improvement mod for BF3.

Is this a cheat? DICE say yes. I say no. I've looked at the mod creators YouTube post and all he's done is reduce DICE's absurd level of desaturation. The game actually starts to look good!

It isn't as crazy blue as "Far Cry" or anything, but at least it isn't as grey and depressing as British Cinema!

I tried on the alpha of the tool, played with it a bit...

And yes i see why DICE decides to do so.
In the video i think the colours gets way to dominating, over saturated, mostly reminded me of HDR photos... fair enough if people like a warzone thats shiny and looks like everything was painted yesterday.
The problem is, enemies gets insanely easy to see, they stand out far more, and vehicles are impossible to hide.. its like the old days with custom skins in CS

Apparently, another risk of colour grading and saturation effects that DICE is most worried about is that it reduces the sun-glare ingame so it MAY give a significant advantage over other players.

Looks good, but in a multiplayer game everyone needs a level playing field. If someone had neon player skins it would be an unfair advantage over the normal skins, this is somewhere between and you've got to draw the line somewhere.

Agreed. Whether or not you think it offers an advantage, it's unwise to let people mess with the visuals like this. DICE have probably got this one right.

So does this mean I need to remove my mod that turns enemies into velociraptors, and friendlies into the power puff girls?

Damn...

This should be only banned on ranked servers - if at all. Either that or DICE should add a "See game in colour" radio button to the graphics options.

The idea that colours give an advantage and therefore are a cheat, is as ridiculous as those players with inferior GFX cards are cheating because they turn all the effects off and can see clearly on maps where blurring, wind, sun etc. obscure the view of players with GFX cards that can display it.

What next? Handicaps for players with Core i7 CPUs or players with low ping?

This is more like sour grapes that people have modded the game anyway, despite DICE's refusal to release mod tools - so they could ring every penny out of gamers with paid DLC. Since being swallowed by EA, DICE have taken on the corporate "thank you and stuff you" attitude; the love of the games has gone and DLC & consillitis has taken its place.

For example - DICE had Night Vision sights in BF3. But because they  didn't make any actual night maps (making them B&W instead) the  sights could be mis-used in the "day" and because they enhanced vision  (their purpose after all) DICE removed them to satisfy the complainers.  They didn't fix them (i.e. only work on "night" maps) they just make  them not work. A lazy solution that showed they didn't care about the  game. Continual nerfing means a pistol is as effective as the meanest  machine gun and a light armoured vehicle can take six RPGS. What  happened to BattleField?

I am more excited by 3rd party mods for BF3 than I am by anything DICE are doing - because they are being made for the love of gaming, not as a cash-grabbing exercise.

sigh.. then turn off the blur, lower the settings and so and see if it helps you one bit..
The system used in the application is a different way of handling the colours, you make the graphics differ more in tons, and you are actually able to make people "shine" when standing in darkness.. id call that cheating..

The decision to not release mod tools, wasnt Dice, its EA... And no Dice didnt really have any saying in the takeover, and EA bought all shares between 2004 and 2006. And now if they dont do as told, they get shut down like EApes usually do.. I played EvE with a game designer for dice over a few years, and trust me they arent happy about it either.

No night maps, what are you on about? You get Tehran HW, parts of Metro.. i guess you have never tried a pair of night vision googles? especially in daytime, trust me its rubbish and absolutely useless.
You must have been using the wrongs weaps m8, stating Pistols > Machine guns is just ranting..
Yeah in some cases a APW/tanks 6 rockets, but then again, if you hit em from behind, it doesnt really take 6 rockets does it now?...

No the game isnt as BF2 was sadly.. Tho its still a great game.

Seems DICE finally saw sense and a colour grading console command will be added to the next patch.

Quote from: EA Dice staffer Mikael Kalmsthere will be a console command  for disabling the color grading entirely in the game included with the  next PC game client update. We believe that turning it off gives no  major competitive advantage/disadvantage.

So, as I said. It isn't cheating. And DICE agree, all be it slowly.

From PC Gamer article "DICE retreat from BF3′s war on colours by adding ‘disable colour grading’ option (http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/22/dice-retreat-from-bf3s-war-on-colours-by-adding-disable-colour-grading-option/)"

There are also several discussions about settings and in-game advantage. DICE have said that low settings doesn't disable fog, however it does remove shrubbery and lowering the settings will obviously make the game run faster.

Quotethe game is more responsive and hit registration is better when the framerate is as high as possible

I laughed.....
