Post by: DarkAngel on December 01, 2003, 01:37:26 PM
Is it possible to get broadband through a phoneline? Are there any providers? As i will be moving end of january bigining of feb and we are having probs with getting a broadband service there. They have got partitions from the place we are moving to but that was 8 months ago to BT. And was just seing if it was possible to get bd through a phoneline? Also are there any wireless through the airways bd services using the same idea as sky tv?

Well, it depends on your definition on broadband. I would say yes though. The connection I have ordered is a VDSL connection that runs though the phoneline. That connection is 26 Mbit/s at the moment but I have heard of experiments up to speeds of 150 Mbit/s on regular phonelines. It depends on the quality of the phoneline and your distance to the telebox that handles your traffic.

What companies you have in the UK is something I no nothing about.  :)

VDSL - Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line
VDSL is a new technology not expected to be in use in public networks for some years. Its expected to provide speeds as high as 52 Mbps downstream and between 1.5 and 2.3 Mbps upstream, but over shorter distances than ADSL - 1.3 km at 13 Mbps and 0.3 km at 52 Mps. Note that by deploying higher performance lines from exchanges to street cabinets, these speeds could be delivered to more homes.

Broadband is through a phone line, What determines your connectability is the singal strength, i.e. Ozzy osbournes number one is TANGOing awefull, meaning you wouldn't want to connect even if your life depended on it.

I mean "signal", sorry it seemed funny at the time. I figured that the petitions or subscriptions are purely a method for BT to determine the order in which to upgrade the phone exchanges. So pretty much unless your towns connected with 100 year old phone cable every where should eventually get a broadbrand connection if you have a phone line.

well thats the way i understand it.

I think BT is commiting to 100% broadband but you will still get many people who are either too far from the exchange or in areas like Milton Keynes that have large amounts of aluminium cabling and still won't be able to get it.
