Weee..... I'm on tatooine training to be a creature handler so i can tame massive f'off things to crush people in the bare paws... :D
Top game so far, been keeping me from cs since i got it last friday.
Anyone else play? Which server you on?
Check it ooot (http://www.swgalaxies.net)
Chimpy and I play on Corbantis, so if you've set up character on another server then we shall never meet [sob].
I'm a Zabrakian (Darth Maul type, but nice) Artisan, and am working towards my droid engineer exams. I'd also like to service and repair ships when they become avaliable.
Chimpy is a human who wants to be a Stormtrooper (which the game won't let you) and spend hours mindlessly guarding gates and things ...sigh.
I personally think this is the greatest game I've ever played - it's what I've been waiting for since I discovered computer games like Elite back in the 80's.
High praise indeed I know, but if this thing is your cup of tea (and I know for many it won't be), then it's the best cup of tea around. With sugar. And little sandwiches that don't have the crusts :D
I think even that bitter n twisted smilodon is coming round to the point of view that this may actually be a decent MMORPG :) not that it has any competition imho.
I'm currently looking to be a creature handler like JB, but as I'm sure he's finding out it takes a LONG time to even become a novice creature handler - hang in there mate, it's definitely worth it from what I can see. I also run errands for the empire and one day I hope to enlist - I know I can't be a stormtrooper Smilodon, but I can buy the armour so I can dress up like one :D That way my character on screen looks exactly the same as me dressed up in my front room :D
No magazine review will EVER do justice to this game - it's simply too big and complex when you look at the possibilities and the fact that Sony keep adding content all the time. I just got my first creature mount the other day (a steal at 8000 credits) and now prowl around the Corellian plains on what looks like a big chicken sans feathers :o
For less than £10 a month this is great value - If you're thinking of trying it and aren't sure look at it this way: The first month is free of charge so you get to play it for a whole month to see if you like it. If you don't like it just sell it on to a part-exchange. How many other games do you play for more than a month? The answer is "Not many". Thereby with this logic it represents good value :) Plus when Valve starts charging you for steam the concept of monthly payments won't seem so bad at all ;)
Awww... i play on eclipse. :(
Hmmmm...I met this strange dude just outside Coronet (capital of Correllia) while Chimpy was in hostpital (again), and he let me rest up in his camp. After some pleasant banter he kindly forked out 10K in credits as I was a noob and skint.
Like the trooper I am I shared half with my pard'ner Chimpy. So the question is mate where's my horse pal?
did somone say £10 a month ? I think you must be under some sort of jedi mind trick ;)
I got a Pistoleer/Medic on Eclipse and noob Scout on the european server...Star Strider or something, I forget. I've had the game since June but find it too long winded and repetitive. Once you've done one "destroy lair" mission you've done em all. I did complete the Jabba's palace group of missions and did get to meet the big green guy as well as Boba Fett and must admit to feeling like a teenage Star Wars fan again..was a good moment :)
Did also take part in some PvP battles as an overt Rebel and that was a good laugh.
Pete

You'll get what's coming to ya matey :) I have about 10k in the bank so if we put that together then it's large chickens all round :) You might even be able to get one of those big zebras or the things that look like a cross between lizards and bassett hounds! I managed to buy a gun on the bazaar for 2k then some guy in the spaceport started shouting that he was looking for one so I told him he could have it for 10k - sweeet.
I'll be on tonight from about 9pm if you fancy hooking up.
Reading Xedos comments it's hard for me to object as I haven't been playing it as long. But there are so many ways to go that for me personally to get bored would take a great deal as there is so much content out there that is "off the beaten track". Time will tell.....
Yeah playing solo is possible but's it's like playing CS against Bots. The fun comes from interacting with other players. especially if you roleplay it (something Chimpy gets shy about doing ;) ).
I even found myself chatting up an exotic dancer who was performing in the local bar. She was very easy on the eye and had some lovely moves.....until I remembered it was a game aned then it all became very sad :(
I forgot to say...my pistoleer on Eclipse is a real sexy babe so I'm never short on heals, cash or weps :) I don't tell anyone I'm actually a red-blood heterosexual male with no sexuality worries at all - I just let them reach their own conclusions and hand out the freebies in hope of getting my phone number or something LOL.
I was dancing in a cantina on Corellia and an overt imp came in. He slaughtered several peeps with some unarmed combat moves and didn't pay any attention to me in my hotpants and vest ....until I took him out with a few pistol shots from my sliced DL44 ( Han Solo type blaster ) with a speed of 1.6 and max damage of 180.
as they say..."Don't call me babe" :)
My char on Starstrider is a wookie btw, speccing in one handed swords..hopefully.
Hmmmm...might actually start playing that again. I've not been on since player cities and mounts were introduced. My eclipse char has 60,000 credits so I might keep hold of that and wait for the space expansion next year.
Later guys,
Pete
Or you could find me and give them all to me then finish with that character. ;)
I used to play UO for about a year and a half.. To be honest the game was too time consuming. Definately not my cup of tea anymore..
I do think that Galaxies has more depth and longivity than UO but I'm not going to find out.. I'd like to hear if any of you guys become "force aware" and go the jedi route. I think that would be the way to go..
The more that I play this game the more I think there are some massive game play flaws.
The worlds are full of people trying to increase their cash and to level up. No one is actually playing the game. Hardly anyone roleplays, the cities are full of players who are away from keyboard, either advertising their products, shops etc or asking for level ups etc etc and it seems the ultimate career path is Rebel Jedi.
i thought I was missing the good stuff as I was a noob and no one was talking to me about the game itself. The truth is no one is talking about anything other than leveling up their player. Sony worked hard to make player advancement relistic and not truly level based. Sadly most MMORPG players are obsessed with improving their character as fast as possible and at the expense of any real game play.
As soon as the free trial is over I'll be trading it in for a new game.
Guess you guys wouldnt recommend it then was thinking about getting it.
It may work one day when the million billion game play bugs are ironed out. Although I think the concept of MMORPG's is fundamentally flawed and will be as long as the idea is to take a basic unskilled character and make them into a master something or other.
The day the game is about doing something rather than becoming something is the day I'd pay to play it.
Yeah but surely theve found out these probs with the release and hand aout a patch or is that a long way off?>
I'm not talking about technical bugs like crashes etc. I'm on about faults in the game design. At it's heart SWG is not a game about building communities or actually doing something interesting. It's about leveling up to a master something or other and then starting again.
If you fancy starting with a weak character and through doing the same thing over and over again turning him or her (or it) into a Master Smuggler or an Engineer or a Medic or whatever then you'll be happy for the rest of you life with SWG as that's all this is about.
But you'll do it in a world where nothing happens and no one does anything apart from level up and level up and level up
You have put me off it now me goes looking for another game to buy any recomandations?

Sorry but I fundamentally disagree - you get out of this game what you are willing to put in.
I've spent a lot of time on this in the last three weeks and have never had problems hooking up with total strangers for some adventuring. You have to have some level of proficiency to do the really interesting stuff like Reb/Imp missions or going Jedi, but then was that ever not the case in any computer game? In virtually every FPS (and many other genres) ever created you are already a leet god-like warrior on an interesting challenge. And
none of those games have any longevity. The only games that people play for any appreciable length of time are the one's with pvp interaction (such as CS). SWG has this in bundles - in fact it's the only way to truly progress and evolve.
The difference with SWG is that you aren't pigeon-holed - If you think you are then you aren't thinking laterally enough imho.
It's all about the journey and the things you do on the way. To do something you have to become somthing, and to become something you have to do something - The circle is complete ;)
