Title: tablet advice
Post by: Benny on October 16, 2012, 03:16:53 PM
Winged monkeys, I have a need......

I want a new tablet for the missus to watch telly on, read email and browse the web. iPlayer, ITV player, TVCatchup etc, so she'll leave my iPad alone. It has to be straightforward and have a big screen and not cost the earth*. Now fly my beasts and find me the answer.

Oh, and I'm not upgrading any firmware or installing ice cream manwiches or any of that palaver.

(Thanking you muchly)

*Current going rate for the earth is £100 and it's not to cost that much

My advice yesterday would have been "Wait to see the price of the Microsoft Surface" Having seen that my advice is "avoid the Microsoft Surface", there are plenty of first and second generation tablets (Galaxy Tablet and the Xoom) which have good hardware specs and are relatively cheap these days (~£300).

However that was too much for me as an impulse purchase so I went with something similar to this: http://www.ebuyer.com/392408-sumvision-astro-9-7-tablet-pc-astro-9-7 (the exact one I have is the Scroll Extreme which is virtually identical specs, but no longer on the site).

I'm happy with it. It plays all the TV shows I have, and has a battery that didn't go below 70% on a 4 hour train journey. It supports the play store so has a wide array of apps. It's a single core processor, with a reasonable GPU chip but don't expect all the latest games to run smoothly but it is fine for web browsing, emails and simple games like temple run etc. I thought mine was good value for money at £180 but since things like the Kindle Fire and Nexus have really started pushing prices down the prices have gone silly. So for £125 you can have a tablet. It's rude not to.

Would your budget stretch to a Nexus 7 (http://www.google.com/nexus/#/7)? I've had a play with one at work, they are rather nice.

Also had a play with the Nexus 7 and it's a serious piece of kit. £150.00 which is hard to beat, decent spec and Google are basically selling it at o close to cost in the hope you'll buy a load of content from their play store. Much like Amazon does with the Kindle range and Apple doesn't do at all.

A 10 incher would be best for your missus

Xoom 2 going less than 190 recently seen on HOTUKDEALS.

If £100 is the limit then you would probably be best looking at having Ainol (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AINOL-NOVO7-ELF-II-supported/dp/B0087DA8YK). Everyone seems to rate 7 inch Ainol (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AINOL-NOVO7-ELF-II-supported/dp/B0087DA8YK) for around £100.

Ainol Elf II uses the A9 dual core chipset, lower power consumption that the previous A10 stuff. Both have 2160p HDMI output off dedicated GPU and I believe they also have reasonable battery life for budget.

But consensus is definitely in agreement that the Nexus is the one to have for the extra cash, but lots of complaints about lack of expansion, no MicroSD slot, although USB OTG has been hacked for it.

I really can't imagine what you mean.

All I was saying is, if Benny doesn't fancy splashing out on his wife, he may have to convince her into trying 7 inch Ainol instead.

AFAIK the Nexus is £159.99 and £199.99 wherever you buy it, although Comet seem to be £10 than everyone else. P&P might vary as well. Personally I'd get it direct from Google.

I've got an Asus TF300TG, which is a pretty decent piece of kit. A bit above the price range suggested, but it's a powerful 10" tablet with flash capabilities etc.
And I got the Jelly Bean OTA update last week, so they're fairly up-to-date version-wise.

And this is where it goes wrong. I want it out of the box, no touch, no effort for me to do anything to patch/upgrade etc. It has to be simple because the Galaxy she has is crap and I can't be arsed to sort it out. Am I better off with an ipad?

SO to save this turning into bash Apple. The unfortunate truth is, you plug it into iTunes, it works. You don't have to think.
It may not be everyone's favourite but for simplicity it's perfect.

If you're telling me there is a similar set up on the Nexus, brilliant. If it's out of the box functional and easy to set up. What I don't want to do is jailbreak/root/install new software/download 10 patches, but not the other 3. I'd be tempted if it was mine, but it's not. It's for a girl. Remember fellas, girls are the ones that smell nice but aren't that clever. You know, like Lib.

To be fair you going to have to do updates for whatever tab you look at mate and also the applications that she wants to use. The thing to do is to take your girly to a shop and let her play with the nexus and the ipad and let her make her choice .

Agreed an update is an update. When one comes available you click Ok a few times are told to keep your device plugged into teh mains and not to turn it off. Then you're done. Nexus, iPad, windows Surface thing, it's all the same really. go with the best price point v feature set v what your wife will be happy using.

I suppose the main thing is that the Nexus is the Google offering for it's own OS, so future proof for at least the next 3 or 4 releases on Android I would assume.

It's already head and shoulders above the clone market and shouldn't get abandoned.

rooting is just the same as jailbreaking an iPad, the only reason most people do it is to remove branding or install a tweaked rom with better interface or overclocking. So out of the box functionality shouldn't be an issue.

I'd expect the Google upgrade process to be just as easy as upgrading any device, most of the rooted handsets out there are using ROM manager software to upgrade and that's as simple as copying a file over and telling the thing to reboot.

And I don't really smell all that nice.

OTA = Over the air. You click ok and you're done. It'll reboot and it's upgraded all your apps are there the same as 2 mins before. The only thing simpler would be an update that doesn't require pressing ok...

Having used iPads and Android I have to say an iPad is not worth twice the price let alone 4 times the price of an android tab. iPads cost the extra due to branding and not features. If after 10 mins you're not grasped the basics of web browsing and getting apps on an android tab it's a lost cause no matter which platform. My mother stuggled with an iPad because she couldn't remember her iTunes log in and the need to use iTunes etc. Whereas my last 3 phones haven't required even the slightest knowledge that PCs even exist let alone being plugged into one. As much as I'd love the "it just works" argument to be true, they have stores with "genius" staff for a reason.

If you log into her gmail account for her I doubt you'll ever have another technical question from a major android tablet (Nexus, Galaxy, Xoom etc). Budget ones with different apps stores are a whole other matter, but still only 5 mins of setup away from working like a charm.

I bought myself a nexus 7 last week - had already bought the mrs a kindle fire hd and after playing about with it decided to buy myself one.  And very impressed - everything run smoothly, videos sometimes a little jittery at start but it's minimal before streaming flawlessly.
