The grand old man of astronomy has died aged 89

This really is a shame. I still remember him presenting shows when I was a child. He had genuine enthusiasm for the subject and that came across in his work, a feat which many other presenters fall short of.
Gutted, but what a life and what a legacy to leave. I bet if we asked we'd find many/most people working in Astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology etc were inspired to do so by the great man.
RIP, a sad loss indeed :(

Sad day indeed. The family had bought its first TV set and I had just turned 15 when I saw him the first time on 'Sky at Night'.
I was enthralled and I've missed few episodes since. A fascinating man who will be sadly missed.
Bad week for the loss of personal heroes, what with Dave Brubeck passing a few days ago.
I think this might be a suckiest part of getting older, all the people that I thought were awesome as a kid are dying.
RIP Sir Patrick, I always thought of you a little when I looked at the stars or needed a bit of help with a game.
I met him once. Madder than a duck with arms, but his enthusiasm was infections.
I can totally see how he inspired people, what a massive loss.

very sad news indeed but not totally unexpected, and such a character and like Tut met him several times.
He lived in the same village (back then, now town) as my grand father and often spent time together in pub and star gazing. My Grand father worked for the BBC (radio) as an engineer, at the same time as 'Sky at Night' and often did shows and recordings together.
Knew of him but didn't follow him so to speak, seemed like a cool guy, was reading quotes he's made about various topics in Yesterdays Daily Mail, made interesting reading RIP.
