Title: You Tube - another look
Post by: smilodon on December 26, 2012, 06:36:03 PM
Boxing Day is a quiet one in Chez' Smilodon so I thought I'd waste a bit of time and post something about my new found love of You Tube. If you're already an active user and subscriber of You Tube then nothing here will be new to you other than some of the channels I've posted. If you've not looked at You Tube in a while or just use it to look at a specific video that for example someone on this forum has linked to then you might want to take a fresh look. You Tube has changed over the last year quite a lot.

There was a time when You Tube was just full of dumb kids trying to be Jackass the movie clones or people posting movies of their kids falling puddles. But over the last year or so it's gone through something of a revolution. You Tube is slowly morphing from a vast store for the worlds pointless and trivial video clips into a  full on-line broadcast medium. Google have completely redesigned the interface and linked You Tube closely with the Google+ social media platform. What has also changed is that an every growing army of content creators have set up on You Tube and begun to produce professional looking videos about all manner of topics. Most of them are passionate about their chosen topic and while many of the channels are still quite amateurish more and more are becoming quite polished and professional. There are channels made by large corporations that simply mirror the often bland and banal TV we're used to. But You Tube is full of new vibrant programs made by people with a real integrity and love for their topic.

The channels range from the informational through to drama and short film. There's probably a You Tube channel for every subject and hobby you can imagine. As an example here are two channels that I love but that are completely different to each other. hopefully they'll provide an example of how diverse You Tube has become.

The first is Vsauce which looks at interesting scientific questions and conundrums and then answers them in a fresh, interesting and understandable way. The videos don't just cover the subject but use it as a jumping off point to look at other amazing facts related to the original question. Subjects have included "What if everyone jumped at once"; "What colour is a mirror?"; "How high can we build?"; "Why don't any animals have wheels?"; "Travel inside a black hole."

Here's one to get started

The Guild is a video web series about a group of on-line friends who are members of an on-line guild called the Knights of Good and play an MMORPG named 'The Game'. It's clearly a parody of World of Warcraft and the stereotypical 'On-line gamer'. The Guild is now in it's sixth series and has become an Internet phenomenon making celebrities of it's cast and turning it's lead character and creator Felicia Day into an internet superstar.

The first episode of the first series. Made with almost no budget

An episode trailer  from the latest series, showing how much production values have increased.

While neither of these channels might be your specific 'cup of tea' hopefully they illustrate the diversity and production quality you can find on You Tube. I'd be interested to hear about anyone else's You Tube favourites.

I used YouTube for music vids, now I use it for that plus many things.

As you state with google IMO it has been optimised.

I breed lizards as few of you know. Recently via YouTube I have gained a vast amount of knowledge of the type of lizard I breed and more. It's amazing what you can find.

It's late now but I will watch what you have linked.
