So I did some browsing around, and have read numerous articles concerning the new Xbox currently titled as 720, but what no one appears to have touched on is the level of backwards compatability as the 360 did with its predecessors games, but also how will profiles/achievements be affected on this new console?
If like me your an achievment collector (bar the insanely hard one or ones that are only possible via broken mechanic's such as terrible multiplayer) I am assuming you would wish to transfer your profile to the new system and keep your achievments yes?
At the time of the 360's release achievments/trophy's didnt exists on consoled but now that they do it is surely something that needs addressing, as in the event that such a transfer isn't possible and they remove the 360's online usability, this will mean alot of people losing alot of "work" they put into there profiles and the reducing of the games to being unusable or only sellable to CEX for 50p due to no compatability.
jsut my thoughts, what do you guys think will happen?
well its a bit tricky, as many rumors state that the xbox standard 720 wont have a optical drive, so games will be downloaded before usage..
but then again, as you stated youself, its just rumors, nobody really knows
Have to say I do like my ps3 for some games uncharted, wipeout (now gone the way of many a good software house) and my xbox 360 for forza, but those are the only things keep me playing. I really doubt I will be investing in a "next-gen" console.
well the plus side of Xbox profiles is that they are available via other methods such as web access, GFWL etc so transfering them over to another system digitally will be a synch, this about games only being downloads doesnt sit particularly well with me, i just prefer to own the physical media for a game, partially to allow friends to try it out on there consoles to encourage them to purchase, but also, lets face it buying a collectors addition game for some extra content and sometimes replica figures is sometimes a fun purchase.
if its the case that they are not transfered and that games are now downloads only I will keep my current 360 and considering investing in next gen consoles, as stated this is all rumours though, as a complete transfer from disk to download would have serious financial ramifications, companys that rely on selling physical media or buying/re-selling it such as CEX would be made obsolete (or forced to change there models excessivly) endangering countless jobs in retail

Well if their changing to a steam like service there might still be other sites selling keys, and the rumors state the option to buy a optical drive and bigger then standard models containing a optical drive as many use em for mediacenters/ bluray playes

they are also discussing SSD removable cards for aquiring the games, as to how this will work i dont know, i mean will we go to a store, stick SSD in and select what we want and purchase to upload? sounds like an interesting system to be implemented.
one downside of a steam like system is internet requirement, I for one have an excellent connection for what i currently need but downloading a 50GB game (with sufficient seed's) would still take me a day or 2 meaning i couldnt play my purchase straight away, and as for those living in rural area's download rates can be so slow it just wouldnt be a viable market.
an included optical drive with standard wouldnt be an issue, if it was to allow for play of 360 and DVD's only, as long as the 720 game's are not released on disc and the information is secure enough on servers etc would protect there future investments and reduce "re-play" selling but not at the expense of there consumers.
I don't really use the current generation of consoles. They're badly in need of an update. Unfortunately the rumoured specs for the next gen are graphics cards on par with my current one (a year old an not even the best when I bought it) which is a little disappointing. If you remove the ability to shift around games, or instantly play them, there aren't really any benefits to owning one. I've no problem with a download system linked to my account. I can log into other computers on steam and show games to friends, but I can't see a reason to buy a console to do that.
I'd imagine the next gen of consoles would be essentially a £500 PC with a steam like service on it. Games developers are going to be wooed into developing platform locked games exclusive for X months to try and sell the platform. Within a year or 2 of launch I imagine that will underwhelm the public and the dedicated gaming PC (eg steambox) will start gaining traction as developers target all platforms to generate more cash. The PC has a huge back catalogue, with most of the games players are familiar with, in better graphics than their console equivalent. It shouldn't be hard to convince a sizeable number to switch if the controller support in solidly handled which for the most part it is with more recent games...though some FPS games less so.
Aye I can agree that at the time of release the machines where only on par with gaming rigs of there time, now though even with a modest gaming rig you can see massive improvements on PC editions of games, unfortunatly unless they re-designed the components from ground up making them console compatable only, i dont see them ever creating a console that can be upgraded and changed like a desktop, even though this could potentially be a lucrative market based on the cost of some components, new console is £300, new NVidia ****** graphics card comes out for consoles and is £200, thats another 200 squideroon's in your pocket.
the next gen consoles will be equal to a standard current gaming rig like the predecessors from what i have read so far, and to be fair some developers already produce some titles exclusivly for a target console, resistance fall of man (or humanity was it?) and the Halo franchise are developed for the PS3 and Xbox respectivly, one reason they cant make consoles "too" powerful is simply due to costs and consumers, at release the 360 was £319 roughly, that got you a console equal to a standard gaming rig at that time, if they had made a console equal to a top end gaming rig of the time, you would have been looking at high end hundred's or a thousand plus for said console, reducing your market to a smaller niche group.
None of the Xbox models, PS1, PS2 had any impressive hardware when launched, only the PS3 astounded a bit with the use a Cell based chip, to big greif for developers... so the rumored specs are pretty much the same level as all the previous generations launched.
When it comes to consoles, developers look at a fine balance of performance/power consumption and general build cost... the games will probably still surprise when launched, the games a fine tuned to the hardware as the devs, know exactly what hardware/power they got to work with. Same reason you probably wont see upgrade able consoles, if we did, devs would end up optimizing to a variety of hardware, and what do you got then, a computer with a different os.
as said in my previous post, standard hardware in the consoles due to costs, which you also addressed Kregorn, the main downside is that whilst our PC gaming rigs are superior in hardware, a number of games can only be aquired for the consoles due to it being a more wide spread/lucrative market, which sadly leaves us little choice in some regard's, if you want game A you will need Console B etc
