new xbox has been revealed

cool stuff... and how much?
Early days yet but first impressions are that I'm surprised that no existing Xbox games will be compatible with the new system, so it will either mean throwing away a lot of games or running two consoles side by side. I guess that's what happens when you make such a big upgrade to you system. Right now it looks like both the Xbox and PS4 will be more powerful than any currently available PC. Of course give it a year and as is always the case, the consoles will get left behind high end PC's again.
My main problem is that I've no love for either Microsoft or Sony. Both have shown that their primary goal is to monetise their systems as much as possible and to charge for anything they can get away with. It's possible that the PC will die out as a gaming platform at some point (but not while World of Warcraft still breathes :D ) I'd be much happier with a hardware platform that wasn't locked into some vast conglomerate that has consistently shown to never have it's customers best interests at heart.
Also I don't think living room consoles are the future for 'casual' gaming. Nor will they become the all in one home entertainment system that Microsoft is hoping for. I think Tablets and mobile are where that's headed and it will be Google and Apple that will lead the way not Sony and Microsoft. Give it a few years and we'll be wirelessly linking our tablets to our HDTvs and using them as our gaming platform. Sadly I think Microsoft have missed the boat...... again.
Interesting picture raises more questions than answers

No 2nd hand games, having to pay a fee to "unlock" a game if its been installed on another machine.. Not backwards compatible with 360 games.. Its a glorified PVR with support for NFL fantasy football where you have install games to your tiny 500gig HDD.. Worse performance than my current 2 year old PC (by a long way)... the future looks pretty rosey for PC gaming as most core gamers will leave in their droves unless they pull something out of the bag at E3.

^ Not true mate, its a pretty average x64 gaming PC under the hood with tech from a few years ago (8-core 64-bit x86 Jaguar AMD CPU @ 1.6GHz is going to be roughly half a speed of a current gen i7 stock and possible 8 gig of RAM (almost certainly DDR5) shared with the GPU which is going to be roughly the same as a Radeon 7790 so a $150 card but with shared memory). Definitely not pushing any boundaries like the PS3 tried to do and failed with its hybrid RISC and CISC architecture from their IBM chip.
Oh dear Microsoft.

It's a completely different architecture, it'd need emulating, which would be too demanding for current systems. The alternative is the PS3 route where you build the old system into the new adding cost, cooling requirements and size. As for the spec being better than current PCs, the only real specification that gain significantly is the ram since they can use GDDR5(PS4)/ESRAM(One) which is much faster than that currently available to PCs.
The processor is less powerful than many currently available for gaming machines, and the graphics are on par with affordable gaming rigs, but there are plenty of rigs that will beat these specs, even mine that is several years old will be comparable (4.4GHz i7 with Nividia 570). It really is just the ram and the fact the hardware abilities are precisely understood that will allow this generation of consoles to outperform the equivalent PC.
The cost associated with design and production of this generation will be considerably less than the previous which both used unique designs, this could be a sign they intend to update more regularly console design. Competition will come in the form of android and PC (ie steambox) alternatives with increasingly powerful specs, these will likely put pressure on this upcoming generation after just a few years. A 4 year development cycle would be my guess for this gen.
As for the connectors blunt, HDMI in is so the xbox can act as a central hub for your TV, essentially your content will be funnelled through it (presumably offering DVR functions and program reminders). Remaining connectors are all fairly standard except the one labelled up as kinect which is proprietary, a strange move considering they opened the last version up to PC developers. (I'm presuming the socket next to the ethernet is a remote extender "IR OUT" for controlling the sky/cable box etc you're pumping through the xbox. The label isn't clearly readable to me, but it's certainly says "OUT".)
Apologies I was reading a review that said 8 Xbox cores was ahead of anything currently available in a PC. Obviously it was a bad review. I understand the idea behind the lack of backwards compatibility but it still stinks for some kid who is going to have to abandon all his or her current games if they can't run both boxes side by side.

They dropped the ball with this one.
I think the PS4 is more focused on gamers than the XBOX because they actually talked about games in their release =o.

Plus the CoD trailer looks SERIOUSLY dated. If that had come out 2-3 years ago on PC it wouldn't caused a storm. Certainly doesn't scream "next gen" to me. Unlike the Killzone game for PS4 which at least looked pretty.
Oh look, it's a PC with a Kinect strapped to it.
I am distinctly underwhelmed by the next generation of consoles, and the launch titles are especially disappointing.
Remember when the PS2 arrived with GTA 3? Now that was a game to be excited about.

I think there are 2 ways to look at this reveal event tbh.
First is the easier (and I think more likely) option that MS is just slowly dropping the ball with this one. The reveal showed a bit about what the console can do with regards to things like TV, Skype, etc, but not really anything to get us gamers excited. I mean, come on, they bring out EA? And announce some fantastic wonderful partnership with EA? Pretty sure they are one of the most hated game companies out there right now... so not sure who thought that was a good idea. Nice of them to mention all these exclusives and wonderful games, but I would have liked to see them... And come on, a Halo TV add? *Sigh*
The second option is that MS really look this reveal event literally. Its an 'Xbox' reveal. Not a games reveal. So, they showed the console. They showed the controller, kinect, and what the console does by itself. They barely showed any games, because it was a reveal for the hardware, not the software. Now, if this is the case, although I don't think it was the best idea, maybe they can have some hope left for E3. If they really bring the big guns there, then maybe they can recover some ground. We need to see all of these exclusives with GAMEPLAY (not just the naff trailers like we had for Forza and Quantum Break) looking tip top and breathtaking. If they can manage to pull that off (and I would seriously doubt it) then maybe they can pull ahead.
For now, I just think Sony retains their edge. Regardless of what the console can do on top of playing games, I think it needs to be sold as a games console. Most buy it to play games on first, and maybe do all that other rubbish second. I know I am also not the only one that doesn't care for voice commands and arm waving rubbish. I do not want to talk to my Xbox. Ever.
i'm gonne be pre-ordering any way
let me break it down for u xbox one maybe £299, comparible pc price lets say about £1000 no brainer really.
or wait a 6 months, and one off price for £299 and then pay £500 and get something that will kick it in to touch?? no brainer for me.
Sorry I enjoyed my xbox and my ps3 for a while the only thing that I want to play on them are the exclusives but that 3 or 4 games on each doesnt warrent that kind of expenditure. And
I love me rig :)
But in all honesty and I am not being sarcastic here, if you get one I am sure you will love it :) enjoy it guys :)
I think the Xbox One will be £399 if the news stories are to be believed. Compare that to a PC without monitor, mouse or keyboard and it's a few hundred pound cheaper. Add back the eye watering prices that Xbox games cost plus the subscription 'you must pay to multi play' nonsense and the gap closes. But to compare the two isn't really sensible. PC's and games consoles are very different and do very different things. A PC can do so much more than a console and in 2013 it's hard to think about life without a PC and an Internet connection. So the real comparison would be be an Xbox plus a low spec PC versus just a medium to high spec PC. That makes the maths very different and I'd say a PC that did both PC stuff and played game would be a better option than a basic PC, Xbox, expensive games and a Gold subscription thing.... IMHO.
Ill most likely be getting one, dont get me wrong im a PC gamer for a number of things, RTS, MMO, MMORPG etc but for games such as halo (i love the idea of a series), AC, Arcade fighters such as Dragon Ball Raging Blast etc, I do prefer a console, not only that but im sure the distance from my screen doesnt do my eye's any harm either :)
In regards to the reveal though I do agree that games should have been more focused upon and even demonstrated even a simple Demo would have been excellent, this could again as said, be being reserved for E3, where I also hope we will finally see the PS4 in physical presence as in the PS4 reveal it was the only aspect I didnt enjoy.

That's not an excuse. If they wanted to hold off on the actual game footage they could have shown some tech demos showing just what is possible and then shown the games at E3....gamers would have been fine with that.
As far as comparing PC prices to console prices. It's hardly a fair comparison. My PC is a couple of years old but has a hefty overclock and looks like it'll outperform the XBO when it launches. If I bought my current system on launch day of the One it'd probably be around twice the price of the console. That should be the end of it right? £800 vs £400, doesn't compete. Unless you factor in that you're going to need a PC anyway. I suppose I could make do with a £400 computer for my work...so that's the difference right there. My rig has a freeview tuner built in so I can set up TV shows to record etc etc, just like the xbox. I've hooked it up to my TV so I can watch any TV show or movie I've got downloaded or streamed, or even old fashioned stuff like DVD and blu-ray.
Then there's game costs. Within the first 6 months, PC: typically about £20. Console £40. Within the first year on sale, typically £10-15, console £35-40. If you take into account the large number of steam sales and humble bundle pay what you want type sales, the average PC game cost for me is probably around £5. There's no running expenses either. If I want to play counterstrike online I load it up, no subscription or anything. Compared to £32 a year for xbox live.
Add on to that the fact that a PC can play any PC game you own. I've got commander keen (23 years old) and I can fire that up if I feel like it. If you've got a copy of Black ops 2 on 360 you won't be able to play it. It wouldn't even be a year old. So basically it's not a fair comparison at all. Console owners will have a handful of £50 games to chose from at launch, whereas PC gamers with have their entire back catalogue of hundreds of games they own all still there, and if they bought a reasonable rig within the last 2 years, possibly a more powerful system. They're able to jump online into games for free, and when they quit out they have a fully functioning machine to do their work on, watch TV shows and movies or whatever else. It really is a no brainer for me.
Kinect is nice, but I'd rather have Oculus Rift, or Leap motion.
Pre-built Intel Core i5 PC from eBuyer £250 with monitor, keyboard & mouse. nVidia GTX660 from eBuyer £150. Windows 8 £49. Gaming rig = £450.
Console £499, TV £275, second controller £40. Console price = £800+
Anyone who says consoles are cheaper is glossing over a lot and exaggerating the PC costs. Plus of course, with this generation of consoles, there's DRM, (on the PS4 as well) so no trade-in and no second-hand games. Every game will hit you for £50-60.
My current PC cost £800 in 2010 (which was pretty extreme then) and all I have bought since is a 256GB SSD and a GTX660 card (£280 in three years). It runs everything on maximum settings just dandy.
Will is running my 2008 AMD X2 6000 and that runs BF3 okay on medium settings and Al runs BF3 on High settings on his Intel box my office threw out. Just add £60 GFX and "presto!" gaming rig.
We hear the same old "PC's are obsolete" and "PC gaming is dead" with every new console, and yet here we still are, gaming on PC's.
It's about preference, but don't let anyone kid you consoles are cheaper - they're not. The only claim they could truthfully make is "simpler".
I also own an XBOX 360 bought recently from eBay for £70 (now that's cheap) and a PS3 bought in 2008 for £300. The PS3 has cost the most in games and accessories than any other platform. Without trade-in I certainly wouldn't entertain the idea of the next generation of consoles. Just too damn pricey.
tbh i'm an xbox gamer/pc gamer always have been always will, heck i was a beta tester for xbox live.
you go one on about pc vs xbox , now tell me if i'm wrong but the nvidea gfx titan is somewhere in the £900 pound mark, when do we stop going 1 up all the time , oh yeah this gfx card can show so many trillian polycons a second, u know the human eye can only take in a certain amount of fps, the rest is wasted.i still have a 4 yr old pc that plays all the games we play fine, csgo,bf3,minecraft,wot,wow, etc all the games we play really dont need killer pcs to run them just fine.
Quote from: Sneakytiger;371075all the games we play really dont need killer pcs to run them just fine.
Isn't that the point. PC Gaming is cheap.
xbox one stuff from e3
price 429 for that u get xboxone console, pad and kinect 2.0.
so basically your getting the console and a 1080p camera.
plenty of exclusive games.
yes i know about the used game thing, but name a steam game u can buy used?
microsofts only doing what steam have been doing for ages.
has to be connected to the net, ok come on guys whats not connected nowadays from your mobile to your fridge has wifi these days.
oh btw just to slip in . WORLD OF TANKS XBOX 360!!! FTP.
Quote from: Sneakytiger;371662but name a steam game u can buy used?
Loads - go to GreenMan gaming.
Also, $499= £332 which apparently, according to Microsoft, translates to £429! (even £332 +20% VAT still only equals £399!!) a £30 tax for being in the UK. That's a 9% surcharge. Add £40-50 for the second controller, £60-90 for each game and don't forget XBOX live subscription and I bet there isn't an HDMI cable in the box either.
Only men in tinfoil hats would now claim PC gaming is more expensive than consoles!
Quote from: Sneakytiger;371662come on guys whats not connected nowadays from your mobile to your fridge has wifi these days
Would your fridge
stop working if it didn't have WiFi? I think not. And even with "no service" my iPhone can manage Angry Birds and Solitaire - even multi-player BattleShips with Bluetooth....
Microsoft dug their own grave. And SONY came along with a spade that cost £100 less and filled it in. The spade will be available second hand AND has a trade-in value....
I'd say the first round goes to the PS4 and SONY.
A Kinect OFF switch, a price drop and losing the DRM are Microsoft's only realistic comeback.
100% the first round goes to Sony.
Plenty do care about the used games and always online stuff (even if we are not amongst them). And the price difference just does it for me (and no doubt, many). I still see no reason to want a Kinect (having owned one already, and sold the piece of rubbish), so what on earth can justify the extra cost for me at the moment???

Build A Better-Than-Xbox-One/PS4 PC For £500... Rock Paper Shotgun Article. (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/14/build-a-next-gen-pc/) Funny.
go build a pc to combat a xbone or a ps4 microsoft still win, when u install windows on it, so basically microsoft win either way.
Ahh but you have choice you can install a game and then uninstall it and then throw it say Tut. Or you can stick Ubuntu or Linux on it and play some steam games. True if you jump on with Windows, but it isnt as locked down or draconian or down right money grabbing than XBONE. They say this is to work more like steam....... yeah I believe it when I see it hahah!!!! No indie development !! Sorry mate IMHO XBONE is XBDEAD.
It meant to be a Unit for everything. Then why have they not stuck in a decent AV AMP and really have it as the hub of all.
My reedies are going towards my next upgrades, I dont have much love for the PS4 but from all the press I have read, it seems to be a more gamer friendly unit.
I have some serious love for some of the Sony exclusive games. There are some real gems on that system... I will eventually pick up a PS4 I am sure, but I will certainly wait until the price drops!
The simple questions I ask Are as a customer
what benefit do I get from having to be online when I play a single player game?
what benefit do I get for not being able to trade, share or sell a second hand game?
what benefit do I get for playing an additional £50 more than if i was a US citizen?]
How does this benefit me? How do the enhance my gaming experience? How is Microsoft serving me by adding these features at this price?
guys before every 1 kills of the xbox one before it even comes out, let the dust settle.
i tend to remember that every 1 was gonna buy a ps3 over a xbox360 when it came out, how did that turn out again?
Sneaky, sorry mate but you're remembering wrong. When the PS3 and 360 were announced, everyone ran a mile from the PS3 because of its ridiculous price (hence now why the PS4 I cheaper I think!). And let's also remember the 360 came out a full year before the PS3. The market at that time was massively, massively different. The last 7 years has changed gaming monumentally, one can't compare then and now in the slightest.
As for writing it off, I'm not ready to do that yet. Say what you will about Microsoft, but they aren't stupid (mostly). They have said time and time again they are in it for the long haul, and just because I think they seem to be dropping the ball now, doesn't mean they won't bounce right back later on. Who knows what they have planned down the road. However, at the moment, Sony are just one-upping them at every turn, you can't deny it. Just reading press reactions and polls on various websites show that the gamers are leaning heavily towards the PS4 at the moment.
Of course, not just gamers buy these consoles. I'll be interested to see what microsoft does to really try to pull everyone else into getting an Xbox. In addition, I'm curious to see the effect the current generation 'ecosystems' have on next gen console sales. I mean, Xbox Live and PSN are massive communities, and there is no denying that XBL simply demolishes the PSN in terms of its active (and paying!) members. MS knew what they were doing there, bundling a headset with the console (genius), and it was earnt them millions as a result. People love their friends lists, they love their achievements, and so on, so how much will this influence where the money goes?
I've stated before I don't have any intention of buying either console any time soon. First of, I simply can't afford it, when I already have a top notch PC to do my gaming on. So instead I'm really enjoying watching all of this from the sidelines, and will continue to do so. And I haven't even talked about the effect all of this will have on the PC market... its a fascinating time to be a gamer boys and girls...

I bought a PS3. In 2008. i picked up an XBOX 360 on eBay two months ago. Both for the kids. Never played either. Never will. That's how that turned out.
Now I have a BluRay player already (PS3), which I didn't have in 2008 - why would I buy either new console? They're both inferior to my 2010 PC and would cost me a fortune in hardware and games. Better to spend a few pennies on upgrading in another couple of years.
I've invested too much of my life in my PC to even consider buying a console...xbone or PSwhatever
I'm not even close to considering a purchase.
Last 1 we owned was a super nintendo
Lets face it, this is a very pc oriented community, which probably makes it all the more pointless that we're getting caught up with which is better.
I have no intention of buying either, I have a 360 - it rarely gets used, I'd like to play the new Halo when it comes out, but I'm not paying £400 on a system for 1 game.
My main hope is that the new console hardware will help all games become better - but then I look at the footage of the ps4/xbox one & it doesn't look any better than what we've had on pc's for the last few years.
We are a pc community sure, but some of us have our roots in console gaming ;) and some still use their consoles a lot (I have a fair few friends I keep in touch with over Xbl and PSN). And even if one doesn't play consoles, it can still be interesting to watch and discuss opinions, which is what we are doing :)
As for how the games are looking, you have to remember they don't need to look better than PC games to raise the bar up, just better than the old gen of console games! And they most certainly do. New console such as this will always drive development in the PC market too, as the console market being the lowest common denominator is what sets the bar in 90% of game development.

An interesting read :)
Looks like Microsoft might be removing all of it's DRM, maybe, who knows (not confirmed either way at time of posting) -
http://kotaku.com/microsoft-is-removing-xbox-one-drm-514390310?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Facebook&utm_source=Kotaku_Facebook&utm_medium=Socialflow
http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update Looks like they've ruined it. They could have just added offline mode when the disk is in the tray and kept other features, like sharing etc. But they've stripped it all back for fear misinterpretation. If they'd have thought it through and just had offline mode with the disk from the start, they could have added the other stuff (loaning or logging in a friends house) and it would have seemed great.
This is both a win and a loss for mass hysteria.
lol bet that cost some microsoft employees there job.lol
Funny to see microsoft themselves agree they almost screwed the pooch on this one.
See sneaky it wasn't just us, and we weren't just hating for the sake of it :D They were making a bad move, and for their sake I'm pleased they realised it. I want both MS and Sony to do well to be honest, an ecosystem with only 1 player is bad for everyone, competition drives the industry forward and keeps things working for the consumers :)

Good catch Microsoft! I'm sure nobody will read anything bad about your new XBOX if you censor your search engine....
:roflmao:
ok now thats sorted let the fun and games, eg ad campaigns begin.
btw is your ps3 working as sony messed up again with there latest update.
Damage is done not buying it what stops them flicking it back on? ;)
