Title: Nexus 5 released in October Rumor
Post by: Snokio on July 14, 2013, 09:10:45 AM
Seems a bit early to me, but the rumor is that it will be closely based on the LG G2 which is expected to be released August, so you could expect a 5.2" full HD (1920x1080P) 2.3Ghz Quad core Qualcomm snapdragon 800 Process, 2gb Ram, 13 MP Camera and running Android 5.0 Lime pie.

http://www.androidguys.com/2013/07/10/nexus-5-to-be-based-on-lg-g2-coming-out-with-android-5-0-in-october/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+androidguyscom+(AndroidGuys)

Timing sounds about right. The Nexus 4 was aimed at being a high end device for a budget price. Every year you'll have a new flagship phone, so the next has to follow suit to keep up. I know they're doing the S4 and HTC One through the play store, but it's not quite the same as true Nexus by all accounts. Plus the prices of those are a different ballpark.

It's a personal thing but 5.2" is getting just that bit too big for me, especially as I have a nexus 7 as well. I know better than to fall for the megapixel nonsense so I may well miss a version and wait for the Nexus 6 or whatever they call it. However if your not on stock Android then if it's a sub £300 phone I think it would be a solid buy.

I've got an S3 too. It's not about being locked into a contract that puts me off (you can buy a phone and upgrade at any time if it's sim free), it's more that it's too little an upgrade to spend the money on. Something like the Sony 6.5" waterproof phablet is a huge leap in what the phone is and does, if that was £300 I might be tempted because it's so radically different.

Based on my experience so far I want my next phone to be over 5", waterproof, have great battery life and wireless charging built in using a standard charging technology (not through expensive backplate replacement). The A4WP protocol would allow easy charging, just place all your products in a box and they'll charge. I'm sure by the time all those features are eventually incorporated into a phone there'll be a host of new "must have" features that I'd want to add (The comeback of fingerprint readers on phones prehaps?, 3D Camera?).

My ipants contract is up in September - I could renew now if u wished but hanging on until more news of the 5 comes out then its either the galaxy s4/nexus5 or if not impressed/it's delayed then most likely buy the nex4 as I can't wait to get away from iOS.

I'm assuming that there will be a slightly different EU version then (I hope) as none of the current UK 4G/LTE carriers use the bands noted in the Droid-Life article?

LTE Channel Reference:

Perhaps the EMEA version might be the D821 we've seen on the web?

Please refrain from using branding on this forum, the official name for the new version of Android is Android four point four or simply four four. We do not promote Nestle products within the dMw no matter how delicious and crispy they are or how they give such an inviting snap when you break them in two, or the almost sensuous way you can slide a finger nail down one of the grooves splitting the glistening foil wrapper..........

I'm really looking for to the slow build up of the rumour mill, size, spec, price. I've not had my N4 for that long but I'm certainly planning on trading it in and snagging a new one.

The N5 is certainly a nice looking phone. If the specs and price are right I may well pick one up. Since I've switched my girlfriend to Android I can now offer her my s3 in order to justify getting a new phone.

N5 has been spotted on a benchmarking site, GFXBench, which confirms it will have the Snapdragon 800 chipset clocked at 2.26GHz and will be 1080P screen

again, this is only rumor! but a pleasant one because if true it will kick butt, although suspect price will be moderately high

With the Nexus 4 being pure vanilla Android you'll keep getting updates for as long as the hardware can handle the OS upgrades/updates. It's only the customised versions of Android that suffer the shorter shelf-life as the manufacturers will only keep customising for old phones for so long.    Android are actually trying to combat this by restructuring Android into a modular form so that that some point in the future the base Android will get updated even on the customised Android phones as the customisation added by a carrier will be a module sat over the top of the base OS.

TL:DR
Yes the Nexus 4 will keep getting Android updates.

Now there looks to be a new competitor to Nexus devices. Oppo N1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV1c8nzDp5s)

The Oppo Find 5 was one of those phones that made me realise that really nice looking, high spec phones can come from nowhere. It had a sensible(ish) price...not by Nexus standard, but beat the likes of Samsung and HTC with their high end phones. The build quality is supposedly fantastic, and the kicker is, the boot loader on the Find 5 is regarded as one of the easiest to mod.

Combine that with Cyanogen Mod, one of the most popular custom rom for android and you've got a very interesting device.  The N1 would obviously be updated very quickly when new versions of Android hit, something that's not true of almost all other manufacturers. This move could bring a nobody player like Oppo right to the forefront of powerusers minds. I've no idea what this announcement will actually entail, will the phone come naked and need a complete customisable install before you get started, or will it just come with some ultra-streamlined defaults and remain very easy to make changes? That'll be the interesting thing to find out. The leaked images of the N1 are nice, but there are no firm specs or price yet...those will obviously be key parameters in a decision to buy.

Of course you can pass quite some time by checking out all the rumours Example (http://www.gizchina.com/2013/09/19/oppo-n1/)

according to 'phonearena' an anonymous person has leaked info on the price, starting off at $299 for 16gb, $399 for 32gb

Other info was 'leaked' such as a 2,300 mAh battery, (3,000 mAh in the 32gb), 4.95" 1920x1080P screen, Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.3Ghz, 2GB Ram, 8MP & 1.3MP cameras, possibly will also feature wireless charging

Finding it hard to believe myself being so cheap but could very well be bargin of the century!

I must admit my main gripe with the nexus is the lack of battery life...yes it is a wonderful bit of kit and it can do some amazing things but it eats your battery if you are a bit heavy on browsing the web/using apps etc.

Agreed. I can easily get a days worth of fairly heavy use out of my Nexus. If I can give it a quick charge (it goes from empty to full in an hour or so) I can run it on lat into the night and even have a bit left the following day. It's no better or worse than any other high end smart phone IMHO

Scarily, as I already have 2 of those 4 and want to upgrade my 4 to a 5, then I might be close!

Nexus 5 is released. £300 for 16gb £340 for 32gb. The screen is slightly larger, the crap camera is a bit less crap, it's more powerful.  But it's not so much better than the original to warrant dropping three hundred quid on. So I'll stick with the already amazing Nexus 4.

Yep it's an upgrade but to what? My Nexus 4 will play any Android game and run any Android app I can throw at it so I'm struggling to see what I'm getting for my three hundred quid. If you need a new phone then getting a Nexus 5 is a no brainier (it's a superb looking phone at an amazing price). But as an existing Nexus owner I can't see a compelling reason to upgrade. Roll on the Nexus 6 ;-)

I'll certainly be grabbing 4.4 as soon as it's pushed out to my phone and Nexus 7 :-)

Apparently It did 'accidentally' appear on google play for a few mins and the specs were displayed:

10" 2560 x 1600 gorilla glass 3
snapdragon 800 processor (same as N5)
584g weight
32GB internal storage
3GB RAM
8MP back camera, 2MP Front
9,500mAh battery
Android 4.4

If this was true, this will be out very soon.

Mine is on its way too, unfortunately is Parcel force and not UPS =(.

I had a go on one today and I have to say however its not as snappy as I had hoped, definitely not two times quicker than my much loved S2 with custom firmware which I was a little dissapointed about as there are still micro lags. Its a bit of a bruiser compared to the S2 too, the screen is massive!

Looking forward to getting it and I am trying to find a decent case for it but not much luck.

Mine's arrived and is now charging.

FWIW the Nexus 5 is smaller in the hand than the Nexus 4.   All the spare real estate around the Nexus 4 screen is reduced on the Nexus 5, thus allowing a bigger screen from a physically smaller and thinner phone.    Will start playing with it later when it is fully charged.

Note to self, remove game authenticators before switching phone!

Mine arrived too.

I have to say its a nice phone but the Shinyness has already worn off after a couple of hours. I don't like the SMS and hangouts intergration in the same app as there is no switch between modes which is messy as hell. Going to try and DL a SMS app and change the setting to make hangouts the default.

I Don't think i'll be buying from very.co.uk ever, the comparision video posted comparing the nexus 4 & 5 was really useful, not so sure about the plastic back on the N5 seems like a step backward, although when I had the N4 it was always in a case it was nice to know that when I did take it out of the case to give it a clean it had a nice sleek/tendy back.

Not so sure about the groans with the camera with the N4 as I found it very good in the right conditions - I don't really expect many/any phone cameras to take decent photographs in low light conditions, it's nice that they improved it with the N5.

Absolutely agree, it is an amazing rip off and the sort of pricing that leads to customers walking away to never return.
