I sense a corporate longing for box set sales revenue.
Let's hope they hire a script writer this time.
While Avatar 1 did grow on me with repeat viewing the story was horribly derivative. Dances with Wolves in the jungle. It's not impossible that a franchise can do something interesting with the story, Chronicles of Riddick comes to mind. However for Hollywood it's pretty unlikely :(

For me it was just another reincarnation of Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'. At least one of the other incarnations, Apocalypse Now, was a cracking film.

I did enjoy watching it though :)
I don't know how you can make 3 more films out of it. The natives weren't all that interesting. Either they'll force some back story in that will taint the original storyline which loads of "Why didn't they just use that against the humans?" questions...etc, or they'll have to have a series on unfortunate events happen. I can't see enough material for more than 1 new film personally.
I'd personally like to find out more about humans on other planets encountering other lifeforms. Having all of space to play around in gives a lot more scope, but completely neglects the "blue people" who are what everyone thinks of when they picture Avatar.
The only way I can see it working is if the Avatar technology is used in different scenarios i.e humans get to enter Avatars from different species on different worlds as you mention. This would open up all kinds of possibilities. But more stories set on Pandora would be hard to make interesting. I agree though a lot of people will just ask where are the big blue people?
