Woops, was JUST about to post the link for driver downloads! Got in there before me!
Anyway, back to the game. Enjoying what it offers so far. If you think the graphics seem hazy, turn up the resolution bar on the left of the graphics options - be aware that this really takes a bite out of your performance.
The thing that shines out the most from what I've played is the sounds. Especially the deep rumble of explosions in the distance (or underneath you) when you are in some of buildings, it really makes it an occasion.
Only played 15mins or so, will report more later.
It's a good game/beta don't get me wrong but is it really worth what it's retailing at? doubt it.
I will end up buying it no doubt because I don't want to venture into the COD franchise and not many game developers seem to be making decent fps at the moment....but trouble is....I've seen a lot of people playing the beta likening it to Call of Duty, which I can understand why some would say this (because IMO it's true) while retaining some of the battlefield esk game play of past editions.
My main gripe with the game is that I think this is what BF3 Could have been if EA Games worked with it from start to finish as a PC game.
Battlefield 4 while impressive on the eyes and ears still leaves me disheartened by the fact that they should have called it battlefield 3.5.
I've so far played 2 conquest rounds on the beta and it seems an incredibly easy game to play...I'm not sure why this is weather it's because everyone still getting the hang of the game or what but its very easy to drive trucks & tanks and get kills with them.
I think they need too and will work on the amount of damage things like tanks and trucks take, as while being incredibly powerful they aint that hard to take down.
Nothing really stands out for me it's neither inspiring or uninspiring as a game and feels like it's made to be "what's expected" of a battlefield title following on from battlefield 3...nothing out of the ordinary but just enough decent game-play to wet the appetite and entice you to purchase the game and so on.
Pros
Graphically a step up from bf3.
Sound is much better than bf3.
Destructiveness! is much better than bf3.
In game communication with Microphone within chat - bf4 has finally entered 2013!.
Ability to type in chat box once the game has ended.
Cons
They have'nt really pushed the teamwork side of the game too much.
it's battlefield 3.5 not 4.
it's too similar to cod a poor mans cod if you will.
it's over priced.
it's made by EA.
it's made by EA.
it's made by EA.
it's made by EA so if there are bugs in the game they wont fix them and they'll soon enough move onto banging on about battlefield 5!.
This for me sums up EA and the BF franchise at the moment.
Quote from: dMw's BF3 server hosting companyDear customers,
EA have contacted us requesting everyone who has patched their servers to r39 to roll back to r38 due to there being issues with stability and r39, you can do this via your game panel in the updates section, if you have problems please submit a ticket, if you didnt patch to r39 yet then please ignore this email.
"As many of you have noticed, Server R39 is not trouble free. There are both obvious and hidden problems with it.
We are concerned that more hidden problems will surface over the next week, and then DICE will be all busy with the BF4 Open Beta.
Therefore we ask that you revert back to R38 at your leisure.
We aim to produce R40 at some point in the future. It should correct the problems encountered with R39. It should also be rolled out in a more well-managed fashion, this is mandatory."
regards
The GDTeam
Followed by a more urgent request that 'revert back to R38 at your leisure' means do it NOW as they screwed it up worse than they understood :
QuoteEA have requested that due to issues unknown we roll back from R39 to R38 patch can all do this ASAP as this is mandatory.
Regards,
The GamingDeluxe Team.
EA have still not fixed BF3.
BF2 was not yet fixed when BF3 came out.
BF3 is not yet fixed and BF4 is now in 'Open' Beta (Open at the moment only to those who bought the ridiculously over-priced deluxe superfan edition of BF3).
Since 2003 we have had 25 'game' releases for sale within the franchise, an average of 2.18 games per year with a higher average in recent years.

I for one like the game, but I really would like it if they stop dicking with my wallet every 5 months.
Issue a game, fix it properly, deliver proper server code that works AND let us host it ourselves (or allow
any commercial hoster to do so), and then let the fan base develop the game with mods, addons, plugins etc. People buy into that kind of franchise, people love contributing and then they'll be more than happy to buy a new version of the game when something new & ground-breaking is needed. After all, it seemed to work quite well for that small mod called CS.
The problem is that for many people the game is good enough for EA to be forgiven it's many sins. If players just stopped playing BF altogether, some quick market research would show EA what they need to do and we'd have the game we want at a price that's fair. But as long as BF is a compelling and fun to play multiplayer then players will obviously play it in spite of its shortcomings. EA probably aren't as dumb any they sometimes appear.
It is a shame that BF/Cod weren't made by Valve, Take Two or Bohemia. Then I think we'd have some really outstanding FPS games to join CS:GO

It's a difficult one for me on the buying front for battlefield 4 I'm very much up in the air weather to buy it or not, at the moment I'm not convinced.
I refuse to pay that much money for what sounds like a BF3 service pack.
EA can jog on, there are plenty of other great games at reasonable prices.
i have to agree i played this at eurogamer on the next gen consoles and i have to say its battlefield 3.5
i'm getting it when it launches in november but not going wild about it.

It's a shame. In an ideal world, if fps gamers could band together and "boycott" it (i.e. stop buying/playing it), then maybe EA(DICE) will have a rethink and much even greater effort to make a decent successor to BF3. I like the guns, I love the sound. But as everyone has said, it's the same old - same old.

Not that i approve of the big amount of DLC content, tho i gives the game a refreshing touch once in a while.
Tho we had this discussion with BF3, and again, if you don't like the game, don't bloody buy it... Yet people keep screaming CODfield... CoD doesn't have the vehicles nor the mapsizes.. So defo not the same..
Battlefield 3.5, matter of a oppinion. Then you should also be calling L4D2, L4D1.5 as the differences are less then comparing BF3 and BF4.
While Smilodon is right about someone else doing it, the sad fact is EA would just buy them like they did DICE and we'd be back to the same place.
I despise DLC because it fractures the community and more DLC means more fractures. Make the map packs free and the single player paid DLC or co-op levels paid DLC.
The BETA is slower than the Alpha and seems less optimised or more bloated - I can't decide.
Manually set your graphics options. The auto settings don't work well.
I don't much care for "domination" as it seems too like DM to me.
Conquest is okay, but as with BF3 there is little in game incentive to play as a team.
I'm glad I got this game at a 20% discount, because it is nothing more than a BF3 expansion pack.
Battlefield 4 keeps loading, jet an other problem for EA Can't play it
Quote from: King;376321Battlefield 4 keeps loading, jet an other problem for EA Can't play it
Mind, this a beta, code isn't nearly optimized, takes a few mins to load a map on my laptop, if you can't load maps at all, try restarting origin.
Played it a little while. I agree it is BF 3.5. What I did like was that it took less hits to take out an opponent, makes you be a bit more careful. But this makes for a difficult decision when designing weapons - how to make them distinguish from each other?
I think BF3 is a very good game (I know, it has its bugs n stuff, but still), I had lots of fun playing it and will have lots of fun to come. BF4 can be better, I think. It is not bad. I did not expect a recolution, I expected a polishing combined with new maps and better destructibility (for lack of a better word) of buildings.
Also, the commander option seems cool.
The vehicles are TOO EASY to drive, I agree. And they are too easy to take out. But I expect EA will balance that soon enough.
Thats my 5 cents.
PS. I'm on tomorrow, but on BF3.

What did you buy for 1300â,¬ that doesn't come close to that?

Those recommended specs aren't that bad. If you spent 1300 on a new rig which is less powerful that those specs, then you sir have been ripped off.

Good luck with that!
I've been playing the beta for a while now. Overall I am pretty happy with the game. Like Arithon I am not very fond of domination (not on this map, maybe I like it more on other maps).
Pros:
- Gunplay
- Sound
- Ammo management, you can't spam tank shells anymore. You can only get new explosives with a ammo crate (limited bullets amount of bullest with ammo pack)
- spawnscreen is big improvement
- voip
- commander mode (haven't seen it yet though)
- spectator mode
Cons:
- Still getting hit while behind a wall
- agree on bf 3.5 despite some big changes in gameplay. But on the other hand, what would it make a bf4?
- probably more, but can't remember it at the moment :P
I really like this game at the moment.
having been a while since the last post I thought I'd ask for an update on peoples thoughts.
connection is pants. Lag is horrible at the moment which is making the game unplayable. might wipe the ssd and reinstall everything again to see if that helps (although I seriously doubt it will).
recent update seems to have improved things a bit..
I'm liking the game/setup. Just need more maps and setups. BF-series addict so wondering how it will go.
Will keep you all posted.
EDIT: All keep in mind, it's still a Beta :norty:
The new "obliteration" mode is classic CTF and a lot of fun!
I was on a server where I was the only player on one team with five players on the other and by using terrain I won the round. They were in tanks, so I took the lift and para-glided from rooftop to rooftop across the map and left them standing.
It's the only game mode where you can't play lone wolf against a team. As soon as other players acted in unison, I couldn't win.
Emblem and battle packs feel like cheap copies of features in the COD series.
Quote from: .DickDastardly.;376751Emblem and battle packs feel like cheap copies of features in the COD series.
Which stole them from so many other games, so not really a rip off, merely a emerging market standard
Last day of the beta today. So get it while you can, until November 1st.
Do you think the BETA has changed your mind about the game? Do you think it was better than expected, much the same, or worse? Do you think they held too much back by not allowing commander or spectator modes?
Personally I felt it was "okay" rather than great. Too many flaws (and shockingly bugs!) were carried over from BF3. Some elements have been improved - the top of my list being the new bomb mode (CTF), the reinstatement of post-round chat (a critical BF feature) and finally, a working team communications system in the game!
Sound effects are second-to-none and the more detailed graphics are a bit more demanding of the old graphics card, but the water and underwater effects are very realistic - the best I've seen.
Destruction is much like BF:BC2 with some things totally impossible to scratch with a nuke, while others can be blown away with a handgun. No consistency to the design though.
The tall buildings had lifts, but no stairwells. Why not? Laziness? I would have been more forgiving of the buildings only having a lobby and top floor with indestructible windows on every non-accessible floor in between, if there had been a stairwell. How much more amazing would it have been if stray fire from a chopper stitched broken glass all across the side of a building?
Again, repeated shelling brought the office building down, but at no time does it show any progressive damage until the moment of collapse. They could have at least had four or five "going, going, gone" models of the lower structure.
Sadly hit detection is still like something from the dark ages (as BF3 or worse). Duck down and as much as a full second later, get "killed" were you were standing - hence the plethora of "I was shot round a corner" complainers. I was killed more than once by the office building falling, when I was on a parachute heading away from the side of it, completely clear! Clearly the "killzone" is oversized.
There's still no word on what administrator (RCON) functions will be available, although Phogue.net (makers of ProCon) have said their application will work with BF4.
BF4 is a good game, and an improvement over BF3, but like recent film remakes (Total Recall for instance) it has some gaping flaws and hasn't look at it's predecessor closely enough to see what made it great, instead assuming (incorrectly) "new and pretty" is always better.
I'm not getting it...too overpriced
Quote from: .DickDastardly.;376901I'm not getting it...too overpriced
Disagree entirely. I spoke to a few others about this at the LAN. Let's put this in perspective. If you have an account and accrue a reasonable amount of hours the money works out to be minimal. The fact they store all your stats etc is part of the service too. My pc couldn't run the beta very well but its very old so I am hoping the finished game might run on it a bit better until Christmas when i will update it with new hardware. Only a week to go people!
I kind of agree on this one. I managed to get the game and the premium pack at a decent price, £59. For that price, if I put in lets say 100 hours of game play. It is a decent priced hobby. If I put in 1000 hours (Duvel....), it is very reasonable.
That is what actually got mentioned during the LAN lol! Ahwell, if I like a game I play it a lot. Just join TS and see if we all can play it together.
Depends if you compare it to an FPS or an MMO. For a game that you buy and play 'as is' with maybe a patch or two it's obscenely over priced. But compared to an MMO with continuous updates and new content added periodically then it's not such a bad deal.

Putting it perspective, how long have we played BF3 for? I'm ASSUMING we should play as much BF4, which would be a good 2 years or maybe a year and a half. And for a multiplayer game that's 40-59 pounds (incl/excl premium), which will last you that long, that's not too bad.
