Well i decided to download 8.1 this morning and here are my initial thoughts
1) it asked me during install for my login information that i used when i first used windows 8......why didnt it know? all it had to do was look at the place where windows 8.0 looked when it wanted that info....fail
2) upgraded internet explorer (i only use this for ebanking as my banking page doesnt like chrome) so it says that out of the 3 modules for jave, 2 are now incompatible (and theres no update as of yet) so i cant access my bank info..luckily i have a win7 laptop and that works fine
3) the download is 3.1 gigs!!! is this an update or a new os?
4) its only available in the windows store, not as an update on the update page...why?
update
5) just did a chrome update and now it works on my banks site...bb IE
update 2
6) if you get this turn of steroscopic 3d in nvidia setting....never had it turned on before but windows 8.1 decided i needed some kind of epi fit

update 3)
so i was moving a folder on my desktop and this happened, apparently it so you can do 2 things at the same time...well i could if the 1/2 pane showed me the full desktop...seriously who asked for this!

ill add more as the day progresses and the more frustrated i become, on a plus note start 8 upgraded so i still have a working start button
update 4)
and now there are a load of updates
I upgraded on Friday and the first thing to require and update was Punkbuster so BF3 could join a server. Then I used the nVidia latest beta drivers which worked well but a clean install was needed.
Seems to be faster and the graphical performance is smoother.
Start button is not a real start menu, just a shortcut to metro. Classic shell reinstalled.
sadly MS killed lucid MVP for now, causes a black screen right before login screen, oddly, when loading 8.1 with debugging on stuff worked o.O awaiting update for lucid, else the stuff runs brilliant.

Had the same issue with BF3 punkbuster, had to also re-install sound card drivers, not seeing to much of a difference tbh :(
I've just bought the Mrs a new lappy with Windows8.
How and why should we upgrade/not upgrade?
I've tried upgrading to 8.1 twice now, both times resulting in failure and a "0xC1900101 - 0x2000C" error :eyebrow:
Hmmm I just ran the update and oddly for Microsoft it went OK? Although a Google of the error code shows you're not alone.

Windows 8.1 fixes a few things, add a few nice features and fails to seriously address the issues many have with the new Start Page/Metro thing. I updated and then upgraded my StartIsBack app to StartIsBack +, which is a free upgrade to anyone who owns the original StartIsBack for Windows 8.0. I assume other start button fixer programs do something similar.
The best suggestion I've seen is to unplug any Xbox 360 pads you might have, so I'm trying that and running it again.
Microsoft's own hardware causing an issue, how unlikely.
Well that didn't work, it never even got to the rebooting stage - just a big fat f0rk you.
I really can't be bothered to sift through the enormous log file it's spat out, I can live without this update for now.
update...just realised it uninstalled avast for me as well...***!!
Reports are already citing that this won't help improve PC sales, I wonder why that is :g:
FYI: Windows 8.1 download (which is not part of windows update that I have seen) : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/download-shop

I think I'll leave it for now:lmfao:
I found it spat out an error code reporting a failed download a number of times but it was in fact still updating. I waited and it upgraded.

Seemed to have worked ok for me, took about 45 days to update and install but haven't come across any problems.....as yet
Installed without issue, although it took about four reboots.
Since then, PunkBuster is now broken and I cannot get on BF3.
Otherwise, it's the same as Win 8.0 as far as I can see.
As some of you know the update broke my ability to use my 2nd monitor. Lots of people affected who, like me, drive their 2nd monitor from the Intel processor.
This is the thread (https://communities.intel.com/thread/45614?start=0&tstart=0) I'm following waiting for Intel to fix their drivers.
I was actually on the verge of buying a second monitor until you mentioned the problem at the LAN, so I'll also be watching this carefully.
Decided to update anyway, more fool me.
The problem I now have is that I got caught by the 'log in with your Microsoft account' things and did not figure out that I had to go via a 'create a new account' option to find the 'sod off microsoft and let me use my local login details' option. So now I have a very long & strong Lastpass password for my local PC login instead of my more memorable local password that I used to use to log into my home system.
Does anyone know how, to get rid of the Mircsoft Live login from this account and revert to my old local login details? I found one tip online which just ended up creating a new account (pointless) and I just want to return to my old login details.
help please!
Ignore me, I found it.
Account Settings, Disconnect.
It then told me I could not use my normal Local account name as it was in use - BY WHOM?!?!?!?!? It's my damn PC and I have not set up any other account on it, so who the heck is using my old account name on my PC?
It's bloody annoying when an update system is designed in such a way as to force you to use a Microsoft account login (yes I now know how to avoid it, but it is entirely less than obvious and most people will miss it).
Seriously frustrating & not happy with MS for that. :frusty:
This W8.1 sounds like it was conceived from the deep bowels of this earth and is not fit for anyone. Glad I'm still with W7 but if W8 is a sign of things to come then bye bye MS.

Seems Microsoft is slowly turning windows 8 back into windows 7. Time will tell.

trying to avoid the 8.1 install on my non-gaming laptop - requiring an alt+f4 to get out of a full (metro style) screen telling me to "upgrade today" every now and again. My old w7 laptop is so much easier to use, wish I could downgrade the other one...
My W8 desktop fails utterly to upgrade to 8.1, but it's also not nagging me to upgrade so.... Yea :-/

I did a clean install of 8 and then immediately updated to 8.1. With Windows I never fully trust the upgrade option. To be honest I tend to clean install Lubuntu (Ubuntu light) as well.

8.1. update 1:
Looks like tile interface will be hidden by default when booting the machine, also the power management button will be on the start screen
