I only use Google+ for the hangouts which recently has been useful.  I am on  FB but I go on there so rarely, have been thinking of dumping it.

Facebook I use to stay in touch with actual people, mainly distant friends and photographic contacts (models, designers other photographers etc). Google + is mainly a news feed where I follow people I find interesting, science and technology writers etc) Although I am starting to contribute and join conversations.

I use G+ because I like it, I like it's interface, and the intelligent (mostly) conversations I find there. Facebook I use under protest only because it's where everyone else is.

I have used Googlemail for a number of  years without problems and joined Google+ last week following the server bust.
Since then I've been inundated with dodgy mail (mostly from China) so I've removed my plus profile.
I enjoyed using Facebook for several years, but became very frustrated  with the inane comments, that outweighed the advantages
of family & friends communication needs. e.g video shots etc.

I now use Dropbox to share pics and video with my family.
I rejoined Facebook last week as Lame Duck solely to discover what was happening to BA4. Amazingly, although I'd not made any reference to my 'personal' closed account, it suggested several people I should add, most of whom were people I had once 'befriended'.:g:

I did check on one guy with whom I had misspent my youth before he'd emigrated to Florida in the sixties only to discover he'd died of Leukemia last year.

On the whole I've become disenchanted with social media, but there again I'm just a boring old fart.:no2:

Opening up a G+ profile will not lead to Chinese spam.  Leaving private information public will, or having a friend with your email address being hit by a virus etc could. I think you have suffered from coincidence, I've had my G+ account for s long time and not suffered as you have!  Do I get spam, yes, but I get that for every email address I have and if you're using gmail 99.9% of any spam tends to get filtered out by Google before my inbox.

I have to agree, I think an increase in Spam at the same time you activated Google + is just an unhappy coincidence. I find Google's spam filtering to be pretty good, certainly better than my domain and email host (1and1 Internet). it's one of the reasons I route my business and personal mail through Gmail.

It's only a problem if you are trying to promote something.
My FB page is just so my friends and I can stay in touch, and I can post crappy jokes.
If my daughter has a problem with her MOT, If one of my lads is coming home unexpectedly, they'll probably 1st try to contact me via FB PM.
I DGAS if people pay for followers/likes in FB or Twitter, that's just sad.
It's not a reason to stop using the platform to stay in contact with your friends.

I use FB mostly to promote my work and network with people. So it's horribly broken for me. I guess I'm also fed up with Facebook's increasingly desperate and dodgy attempts to monetise their service and compromise my privacy. Making money isn't an issue but the way FB go about it is.

As a platform for staying connected with people you actually care about I agree it has some value.

Disenchanted, Disheartened more like it
I beg to differ, for those that I need in my life , Media is fine, For all the rest of you...move slowly to the left while Duck covers my exit.

I would not have a social media relationship with my Grand daughter  1900km away..

Scrabble, Chess, LFS, Sheep Game...keeps me close.

But I don`t need Facebook to do that...

I use neither, nor any other social media.

If it's someone that needs to contact me, they have my e-mail or my mobile number.  What else is there a need for anyway?

In my opinion, many social media users are ignorant of the fact that they are giving up their privacy.  Visiting somewhere?, sure post on facebook so that the thief living right next door can get ideas..  obsessive, I think not.

I've turned Google+ into a glorified RSS feed rather than a social media platform. While I have a plenty of dMw'ers in my circles I follow (circle) a selection of sites such as The Verge, Techcrunch etc, tech and photography celebrities like George Takai, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Bill Nye, Phil Plait, Joe McNally, etc. I am also a member of several communities. However I rarely post but just enjoy the input of others. For that Google+ is a great resource.
