Title: Something from nothing.
Post by: smilodon on December 11, 2013, 04:58:31 PM
Here's a fun idea..... sort of.

Go out with your camera (and a torch) at night but make sure there is a bit of moonlight.
Find somewhere pitch black, with no street lighting etc.
Set up your camera on a tripod or like me rest it on a fence post.
Set the camera to manual mode and pick some random aperture and shutter speed (I used 4 seconds at f8)
Press the shutter and let the timer run down to take a picture. Use the timer so you don't nudge the camera when you press the shutter release and create a blurry image (camera shake)

See what happens. I could barely see anything at all, but with a long enough exposure the pale moonlight illuminates the picture and turns night into some sort of ethereal daylight. Spooky :)

I love night photography. You can have lots of fun with it! An example (The only image I have to hand at work, will upload some more if anyone is interested)

Well, here is the companion shot of the image above. Both taken at Bedgebury Pinetum when they had an "electric forest (http://www.theelectricforest.co.uk/Electric_forest/Welcome.html)" week. Well worth going to one if there's one organised near you.

Another from Bedgebury. These light tubes came on and off in sequence, it was a really interesting effect.

This is my favourite from Bedgebury. They were simply uplighting the trees. With quite a long exposure on this, I ended up with quite a few stars in the sky which I didn't want so had to go through and remove.

Old Town, Hastings. This is my first ever foray into Low Light photography. I've actually sold a print of this at a local craft fair.

Ahh, Fireworks. Taking these is an artform. Surprisingly easy with the right gear though. Taken at Hastings Bonfire celebrations.

Low light, several exposures and HDR to get the final image. It's taken in the underground grotto at Leeds Castle, Kent. I need to revisit this location to see if I can get the shot again without such a harsh shadow.

Finally, my overall favourite. Taken again on the first night of low light photography is this fishing boat. Unfortunately the boat is no longer there as I'd like to get some more shots, but there are plenty of them down in Hastings Old Town on the beach!
