Title: Getting rid of a bicycle with a cracked frame...
Post by: suicidal_monkey on December 14, 2013, 05:58:03 PM
About 7 months ago my bike frame cracked during my commute home - sheared about 2/3 the way around the main downtube - I was probably quite lucky it didn't break into bits. Since then I've been trying to sort out the warranty replacement (frame had some sort of lifetime warranty) and last week they finally gave up pretending they would find a replacement and I now have a cheque instead. I've started looking at new bikes, and am likely to get something with smaller wheels. So...

The question is what does one do with an old bike with a cracked frame so that as little of it as possible ends up in the tip? It's a 26" wheel folding bike, so there's a bunch of standard mountain-bike-sized parts, and I guess the main hinge mechanism may be salvageable/useful to someone with the right tools. First thought is ebay, as it'd be a pita to break up, but delivery would be tricky. Anyone know any bicycle forums that might be good for this kind of thing?

Take it to a scrapyard? They might give you some cash for the metal, maybe....

Do what they do in Holland, leave it on a bike stand somewhere and the council will put a Bike Wreck (Feits Wrack) sticker on it and the pikies come take it lol. Not helpful but true.

Do what they do in Cambridge. Leave it anywhere, locked or not, and watch it get nicked within 30 seconds.

Strip it, flog the parts on ebay as they'll sell really well then take a hacksaw to the frame and make a wind chime out of the tubes for the garden!

Nice plan :-) And a reason to dig out the dremel!

take that dremel, clean up the edges around the break, then weld the heck out of it.
Bike as good as new, and cash in pocket :D
