The Roberts Space Industries web sites has a nice status feature on the front page that amongst other things counts down the number of Alpha slots available to buy (pledge for). At the time of this post it's sitting at about 17,000 slots left. As a rough estimate this number is dropping by several hundred a day. Pledges are running at about $400,000 a month.
There was a change to the subscriptions recently that removed a few perks. In the run up to those changes the number of pledges leapt to about 1000 a week and revenues jumped to £3,000,000 a week. It's quite possible that as the number of remaining free Alpha slots drops there will be a mad rush to get in before it's too late. Also in April the dog fighting module will be released and we'll actually have a game of sorts to play. If there are any Alpha slots left by then I imagine they will disappear vert quickly.
So anyone who is thinking of getting in quick and joining us in Star Citizen, should get a hustle on and get that pledge in quick.
damm yoouuu!!!...bought :boxing:
aye, this prompted me also. Can't wait... for the wife to question the transaction on the CC bill
Could someone give me a quick overview of what this game is about and what you do in it. I've read so much about it yet I'm totally confused as to what type of game it is.
Also, which package are people buying. I don't really understand the difference entirely. Is it just the ship you start with? Anywhere you can see the differences in the ships?
To be honest their website is rather poor. Go to the about game page and it doesn't explain the game at all. I was more confused after reading it than before.
Damn it!

This kind of explains the game concept
the ship types can be found here (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs)
As for packages, it's as much about how much you can afford as what you get. All ships will be obtainable in game. The pledge is about supporting the development and making the game a reality. There are no big publishers like EA or Activision pulling the strings and controlling what gets released. It's all funded by players and game lovers. The ship you buy now will just be a freebie when the game starts but a few months in I doubt it will make a big difference as you will have been able to save up and buy a different ship in game if you wish.
Another 500 slots gone since yesterdays post :)
Thanks
Gunzie, 'the game' is actually two games:
-a single player called 'Squadron 42'
-an MMO called Star Citizen
The RSI 'store' sells a variety of things, but the main thing to look at are the 'Single Ship Packages'. These packages serve several purposes:
-your purchase/investment pre-funds the game development (Alpha/Beta during 2014, release scheduled 2015)
-every purchased 'single ship package' gives you the chosen in-game ship and also gives you a 'free' copy of both the single player and the mmo games
-with the purchase of every $40 (or more) ship package you also get access to the Alpha & Beta versions of the game
The buzz for many of dMw about this game is not just the features listed in the above video, but the coop element that the game is intending to provide. A BF4 comparison might be a couple of helicopters where you might be working with a pilot and 2 gunners for a couple of minutes within the smaller map, but the Star Citizen equivalent might be a fleet of many ships of varying sizes, each playing different roles on a mission across a star system which might takes minutes or hours where you might have anything from 1 to 10 or more people manning each ship and taking on different roles within the ship. That's something we've not seen from a space mmo (or any mmo) yet.
I downloaded the hangar module and had a quick poke about my totally badass looking Cutlass.
Its got room for a gunner position! :D

....and now there's just 15,000 slots left. 2,000 slots went in last 3 days, so we're probably a month from total closure for Alpha access (although there's bound to be a last-minute rush when we get a bit lower).
So tempted to jump in, but I really don't know if I'd have the time to play the game when it's released anyway. Plus it'd mean a new PC too! Ohhhhh why do you all torment me so!

Ditto, arrrgh. Do I pledge or not, decisions decisions. I guess $45 is not too bad for a game but I just don't have a lot of time for gaming nowadays. But then it's only money.
Quote from: Gandalf;379821I really don't know if I'd have the time to play the game when it's released anyway. Plus it'd mean a new PC
Welcome to my boat!
The hangar module loaded on my i5 m430 @2.27, Mobility HD 5650, 4Gb laptop, which is maybe half the minimum spec. I was able to run around and do stuff with a lot of lag... Spacebar... Wait1s... Camera briefly moves up and down in a sort of binary motion... 1s... Noise of hitting ground. It was quite funny the first time ;)
Keep in mind the hangar is alpha quality at best, so it is not yet fully optimised. Performance will likely improve as it is tweaked and the game is not due out for a while, so your hardware will likely have been updated anyway by then!
My hardware will definitely be upgraded by then :-D ... the hard part is holding off as long as possible while it's still in development!
I guess if you want this game to be made a pledge would be a sensible idea, although buy now the game is a certainty. If you might decide to buy and play the game when it gets released and after reading a few reviews then that's also an option. You just won't get access to the Alpha and Beta.
I'm enthusiastic about this game because it's being made by someone who is passionate about PC games (Chris Roberts), hasn't sat in development doldrums for years like Elite: Dangerous and there's no big bloated greedy publisher who is going to screw everyone over with a rushed to market, half baked, bug ridden mess and then continue to extort money from players every chance they get. Also being a pledger gives a fascinating insight into how a Space Sim and MMO is conceived and developed which pledger's can also be a part of. We're already voting on which star systems, ships and worlds we want to see next, we're getting the Developers to tweak ships with our feedback (Freelancer cockpit) and even design ships ourselves if we have the skills.
Horses for courses.
:)
God damn yous - pledging when home from work :p

the $37,000,000 stretch goal has been reached. Well done everyone!:worship::dmw:
Quote from: Chris Roberts (aka Wingman)Greetings Citizens,
You’ve pushed Star Citizen to $37 million in crowd funding! And that amount is only one of the numbers I’m having trouble believing today. Let me share another one with you: 4,924. That’s the number of Organizations that have been created since the new system went online less than twelve hours ago. The breadth of the Star Citizen community continues to astonish: you’ve taken up our charge and are creating something truly unique.
At $37 million, you’ve unlocked a new star system at the center of a nebula:
Tanga System â€" At the heart of an unusual rectangular planetary nebula, lies Tanga System. The inner planets were engulfed as the star entered the red giant phase. The expanded habitable zone unfroze a small world on the former outer ring and for several hundred million years made it habitable. Life began to emerge and was just reaching a primitive state when the star collapsed into a white dwarf, throwing the planet back into a deep freeze, then blasting the atmosphere away with the resulting planetary nebula. That’s how the system was found: Only two worlds (speculation that there could have been three to four more) but both are dead planets with no atmosphere.
The last poll was a hard-fought contest, but it looks like the explorers continue to have an advantage: the winning selection is an “unexplored natural wonder.†As a result, we’re adding a new system (based on a recent, real-world discovery) for you to discover. We intend to stock it with some impressive surprises for the explorers who manage to locate it! Here’s the description:
UDS-2943-01-22 System â€" Breaking news: UEE astrophysicists based at the famed Klavs observatory station have utilized advanced telescopy and other remote sensing technologies to identified a truly unusual star system on the fringes of know space. The object, once thought to be a single massive star, is actually a trinary star consisting of two white dwarfs and an active pulsar orbiting one another. Because of the complex gravitic factors at work, it is now believed that a jump point leading to the system likely exists in or near explored human space. Beyond the bizarre stellar makeup, the composition of the system is all but unknown. Could planets exist in this carefully balanced web? What else might have been drawn there? One thing is certain: the first Citizen to travel to UDS-2943-01-22 will have one hell of a view!
Now it’s time to vote for the final system stretch goal, which will be unlocked at $39 million. If past polls are an indication, it should be a close race between the three options. We have some interesting ideas for developing each one, so you can rest assured that whatever you select it will add a cool new facet to the Star Citizen world!
Thank you for your continued support. Whether you’re part of a thousand-person Organization or planning to explore the galaxy on your own, 2014 is going to be the biggest year yet for Star Citizen.
â€" Chris Roberts
You can find the vote here:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13490-Letter-From-The-Chairman-37-Million
I voted for a Xi'an Science Outpost, but the voting really is neck and neck for the $39m stretch goal feature with the voting split 34%-36%-31% between the three options. (yeah I noticed that adds up to 101% too, but that's what the website says!)
Less than 11,000 slots left now and over $37.5m raised!
$38,000,000 here we come :D
Any hints on what the 40+ mil tiers will implement? Is it just more systems or are there some new mechanics or other stuff that might be implemented?
As far as I know they only went up to about $37-38 million for stretch goals. I don't think anyone expected they'd get more than that. I think they are adding some new stuff, although they might be wiser to just employ more people and get existing work done quicker. I know Chris Roberts hates deadlines but a 3rd quarter 2014 release might be a welcome announcement.
I believe that the $40m stretch goal is another system but there is some confusion which I am presuming will be clarified shortly after we pass the $38m stretch goal (which should be tonight). The last 'chairman's letter' talked of the next $39m stretch goal (the 'final' goal) but a couple of hours after release they edited the statement to refer to a final $40m stretch goal. The list of goals on the website still refers to a $39m goal (which is the UDS-2943-01-22 system), but it is not clear if this will be deferred to $40m or if there will be a new goal added. Indeed, whether or not $40m is the 'final' goal is still yet to be decided, I'm guessing not.
In terms of ships If you look back through there stretch goals you'll see a significant number of ships which were promised and are still to be released.
$38m crowd-funding now achieved!
QuoteGreetings Citizens,
We’ve hit the incredible $38 million mark in our crowd funding campaign. It’s exciting seeing the Organizations feature flourish: backers are inviting more and more people into this world, and in the process they’re making even more possible for Star Citizen’s development. The $38 million unlock is the Cano System, home to a fully aquatic planet:
Cano System is home to a G-Type Main Sequence Star that’s almost identical to Earth’s. Of the four planets in the system, only one is inhabited: Carteyna. Located on the edge of habitable zone, Carteyna is a classic waterworld. Fortunately, its planetary axis constantly keeps the northern hemisphere away from the sun, which allowed for the water to freeze into the landmasses used as the initial landing zones in 2587. Multiple attempts have been made to try to convert the thick atmosphere into something breathable, but the process never seemed to stick. In fact, over the years, every time there’s a new technological development in geo-engineering, they test it out here on Carteyna only to yield the same result. Almost fifty years ago, scientists discovered microscopic organisms in the very early phases of life in the depths of the oceans. This caused a massive uproar throughout the UEE at the prospect that they had been attempting to terraform a developing world. Carteyna was immediately placed under the Fair Chance Act. Unfortunately, Humans had been living here for almost over three hundred years and the families that had been here for generations felt that they had earned rights as residents. After years of debate in the political and scientific community, the population was allowed to stay, but only under certain conditions: future terraforming attempts have been outlawed and the Human population has been consolidated to a single arcology to minimize their impact on their environment and the development of whatever species is growing in the deep.
Our final star system poll was the closest we’ve ever run, with only a few votes separating the Tevarin Ghost World and the Lost Human Colony. Since it sounds like Star Citizen’s backers are equally excited about both concepts, we’ve decided to break the rules and include both concepts!
Kabal System â€" The discovery of a new system is always an exciting time. Even the most jaded NavJumpers can’t help entertaining the possibilities for scientific understanding or new species or even a new home that could await them on the other side of a new jump point. The discovery of Kabal was certainly something new. By all outward appearances, the system seemed empty. It was only during when a UEE Surveying team began to assess Kabal III, did they find something disturbing; old uninhabited Tevarin cities. How could an entire Tevarin system escape detection all these years? Did the Tevarin that were assimilated into the UEE know about it? How was it kept a secret? The questions multiplied when a detachment of Marines, sent to secure the planet ended up discovering a cache of old Tevarin war machines. Among the rows and rows of weapons, they made an even more disturbing discovery; some of the technology was made in the last ten years…
Oretani System â€" Oretani was just one of many systems that were being discovered during the rapid Expansion era of the 25th century. The surveyors noticed nothing in the system’s six worlds of immediate importance. Only one planet seemed to be a viable candidate for terraforming. The terraforming Corp that won the bid sent a mid-level team (and their families) into the system to start processing when the only jump point into the system collapsed. Scientists scrambled to figure out a solution, but it was the first time an incident like this had occurred. As years stretched into decades, people studied the area around the former jump point, hoping for a sign that it had reopened, but after time they gave up. After all this time, Oretani is only ever debated among select number of historians. Most believe that without support, the initial terraformers probably died out, but no one really knows what to expect on the other side if that jump point ever reopens.
That’s it for the additional star system stretch goals. At $39 million, we’ll announce a new goal that will help chart the course for the future of Star Citizen in a different way… and it’s one I’m personally very excited about, so be sure to check back then and learn more!
As always, thank you for your continued support of Star Citizen. It’s hard to properly express how grateful we are to the community for letting us pursue this dream. I know that everyone is eager to see more of Star Citizen as quickly as possibleâ€"more ships, more systems, more gameplayâ€"and I promise you that we’re just as eager to get that out there. Stay tuned: big things are happening in the ‘verse!

Agreed. I'm guessing that's a fighter slung underneath it but confused by the way it's angled down in flight mode:g:
No it's not a fighter. It's a part of the ship that swings down for flight mode. Think of it as a spine hanging down under the ship. Do a google for banu merchantman and you'll see the original artwork of it fully extended.

Cheers. I have seen that in-flight image before but I didn't equate it to the earlier image as the 'wing' structure appears to be very different.
Yep, doesn't even look similar. Really looks like they chopped off most of the wingspan, and made into a cylindrical shaped ship.
Lost most of its aesthetic appeal imo.
Quote from: Gorion;381057Yep, doesn't even look similar. Really looks like they chopped off most of the wingspan, and made into a cylindrical shaped ship.
Lost most of its aesthetic appeal imo.
Keep in mind that the above picture (post #31) is early artwork, but from what I can see the WIP pictures I posted (post #27/28) seem only to have made 2 broad changes:
-the wings seem to slope downwards more than early artwork
-the pointed shape at the top has been curtailed to make a better hard point for the gun
The side-on view does give a distorted picture of the shape, but if you look at the plan & section views then you can see that a lot of the original shape has been maintained. The ship is still wide and with the bottom 'fin' extended in flight mode it will still have a gorgeous look imo.
I hope it continues to look good, I loved the shape in the early artwork (it's why I bought it), so I'll be disappointed if it does turn out to be a cylinder!
They removed all the extra "45 degree" fins from the top, and the wings are quite different. Apart from being sloped, they also look shorter and lost the whole pointed, straight razor sharp feel to them.
That's what I mean by cylindrical > Imagine a massive roll of toilet paper core or some other cylindrical object like a plastic bottle with the ends cut off, chop off the ships top fin, bend the bottom one (nothing wrong with this part), then chop most of the side wings and bend them, and in the end it fits into the cylindrical object.
I'm not trying to be an ass, but those wings they removed and changed were a thing of beauty imo. Would have solved the weapon location issue differently by making them roll out from the side hulls, but that wouldn't be able to support 360 turrets.
I've been trying to get a Banu MM on Reddit with no luck. The new images got me (and a shed load of others it seems) very interested.

Careful of the grey market, there were quite a bit of buyers claiming scams. You can still get the Banu in-game afaik, without LTI. LTI shouldn't cost a lot, according to Roberts around a couple of missions worth.
There's a very good trusted trader system on Reddit which works very well. Stick to that and you should have zero problems. But, as Gorion said, all these ships (with the exception of the Idris-M) will be available in-game and LTI is not going to be a deal-breaker in terms of running costs for your ship.
9,931 slots left for Alpha access and we're already 13% of the way to the $39m stretch goal.
8,938 slots left for Alpha and we're 55% towards the $39m stretch goal!
There goes the 7,000 slots left barrier. Just 6,958 Alpha slots remain and that combines with a total of $39,573,411 which is well on the way to busting through the next $40m stretch goal for the crowd-funding.
$40 million hit with only 6,125 Alpha slots left.

(the last stretch goal is my favourite!)Quote from: RSIUpdated Observist Guide
â€" Additional funding from the $42 million level will go to expanding the website area of the Galactapedia: expect to see holographic ships, items and navigation interface in 3D! Imagine admiring your ships or planning your loadouts right here at the RSI website.
Explorer-class mobiGlas Rig
â€" Every player who backs before we hit $42 million will start the game with their own, visually distinctive mobiGlas “ExoGlas†rig which can be used to access the Observist at any time. I’ve charged the mobiGlas team with a very difficult task: creating a realistic interface that will help keep your affairs in order in an expansive galaxy that we hope players will expand in unknown directions. It’s almost like building our own in fiction operating system for an imagined future, and it’s very different task than building spaceships. This backer-exclusive mobiGlas kit will come pre-loaded with additional galactic information that new players would ordinarily need to explore or barter to fill out; it’s our way of honoring the information you’ve collected about the Star Citizen universe through the RSI site and community over the past year!
Gladius
â€" The Squadron 42 team will develop an additional fighter for the game, the Aegis Dynamics Gladius-class light fighter. The Gladius will be the first fighter built entirely from concept to CryEngine in the UK! Here’s the official description: The Aegis Gladius is the UEE’s reigning light short-range patrol fighter. A single-seat ship with no room for expansion, the Gladius is fast, maneuverable and capable of punching far above its weight. The main advantage to the design is simplicity: cheap to produce, easy to repair and outfit and quick to train new pilots on. The Gladius is an aging design nearing the end of its life-cycle, although iterative updates have kept it the most nimble fighter in the active fleet.
Towel
â€" And of course, everyone who backs before we hit $42 million will also receive a towel for their hangar. Don’t explore the galaxy without it!

Quote from: Sneakytiger;383404whats faster 300i or avenger?
I think it depends how you kit them out and what the final scaling is between a tier 5 and a tier 4 engine. The 300 has 1 or up to 2 TR4, whereas the Avenger has 1 x TR5 main engines. But the Avenger is also heavier than all 300 variants, so acceleration might be slower for the cargo-laden or fully modified versions. The 350R is almost certainly faster than Avengers (2 x TR4 and a lot lighter), the 300s are also probably more manoeuvrable (50% more thrusters), but a fully laden 300 will handle in a similar fashion is my best guess. Think of the Avenger as a more robust version of an fighter ship, similar to the way police select particular makes of car for motorway use - the Avenger is their motorway car: reliable, fast, and fully laden with road cones.

All alpha slots are gone. I wonder how they will push the funding without those slots?
Done!!!
I believe they will still sell stuff and Alpha access will be an additional charge.
They will sell module access, there are no more alpha/beta slots that will be sold though.

And we're there.
Star Citizen? I'm doing my part.
Well, just as a reminder we have a 300i (me) and an Aurora (Oldie) ship package, both with Alpha/Beta access, if anyone needs access but did not back before the slots ran out.
