I have just gone and spent loadsa dosh on a luberly new GF4 Ti4200 128mb Vid Card to replace my Ageing GF2mx.
Now my Problem -- Whilst running CS in ANY resolution I am only getting 20 - 50 fps and dropping to 10 -15 in a firefight 8O , which is worse performance than my GF2 used to be ?
My system = PIII933, 448mb ram, Netgear FA311 10/100, not sure of the M/B make but it on a VIA chipset for which I have the latest 4 in 1's
Now with that setup I should get 100fps EASY.
I ran 3Dmark2001 on it earlier and I got 4868 Marks which when comparing to other peoples results is about right so I figure the card works ok.
I had this problem with my old GF2 which is why I decided to upgrade only to get the same problem.
The Card is running on IRQ 11 which is also shared with the Network card but I can't get the newtwork card to use any other IRQ even moving the card to another PCI slot doesn't change it ?
I have updated to the latest Det Drivers with no difference.
Also it doesn't matter what RES I run CS in 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 fps ramins the same, surely that ain't right.
I got a bottleneck somewhere but I just can't pin it down.
Any suggestions ? - Any help would be appreciated.
Make sure you are running cs in OpenGL and not software firstly (you change this on the page where the res is ie:-1024X768)
What OS are you using XP,ME or win 98?
Make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers for your OS if XP the latest are 40.42

Damn, I've been running on D3D ever since year dot 8O I will change to the OpenGL driver- gee guess who feels like a prat now then, eh?

/me goes to change to OpenGL for my NVidia GF3 Ti-500
I run in D3D mode with my GF3 Ti 500, no problemo.
I have noticed that the latest official Nvidia drivers f**k up my system so I run the 23.11 version in Win98SE. A buddy of min has XP installed and run the 21.xx version with the best result. My tip is to try different drivers and look how the in game properties are. My next tip is to throw out 3DMarks ASAP :thumbsup: . That program will tell you that your score went up with a new Det driver but still u can have a framerate of 5 in game. I never trust 3DMark. I always check the FPS in game.
A good test map is Beholden in Unreal Tournament (not 2003). Really puts your card to the test.
Hi Lardie. I've got a copy of the NVidia 28.32_winxp.exe driver if you want to try it. I've just done exactly what you have. Replaced my GF2 MX with a Gainward GF4 Ultra 650 XP 128 DDR. It went real smooth, just plugged the new card in, XP chose and installed what it thought was the best driver, (NVidia 2.9.5.8) and it works a treat. Might be worth while trying to get a copy of that driver.
My 3dMark2001 SE went from 2384 with the GF2 up to 7441 with the GF4. I know that the marks aren't everything, but the frame rates during the test went up around 3x, in line with the increase in points.
I think Sadako is right, you'll have to try different drivers until you find what works best.
I'm no expert but his FPS are so poor I suspect more than drivers are involved.
Have you got any strange gfx options in your BIOS?
What Os you running ?
Are you sure you haven't a conflict with your Nic on IRQ11. I know Pci cards are supposed to be able to share irq's but Manufacturers recommend not sharing with the Graphics card. I've had loads of problems in past with irq sharing & not necessarily anything to do with graphics even though there was no reported conflict.
Just to eliminate this possibility try taking out the Nic and see what happens

I went from 23.11 to 28.32 and the following happened. I tried UT and the map Beholden at 1280x1024x32 (everything at max) and I went from 154 fps to 14 fps. Thank you Nvidia! Tried to start CS/HL and it wouldn't even start. Got the same result with other games aswell. Went back to the old drivers and every thing worked as normal.
I might add that my 3DMarks increased by 850 points with the new driver ...
I had the same problem when i first started on CS it was down to the openGL-D3D-software option being on software thats the only reason i mentioned it.
The latest nvidia drivers are 30.82. There are beta drivers 40.41 and 40.71 but there gave my machine tummy ache. Apparently nvidia do have a refresh rate problem that set it at 60hz This little programme sorts that out and you can get whatever your monitor supports http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/ (http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/) I also had 60fps until I ran the fix, now I get 85fps. Hope that's relevant. Prolly isn't, I talk so much shit these days!

Just loaded the Certified 30.82 drivers and got a further 300 points on the benchmark. Can't see any difference on the framerate though.

the website says that the refresh rate fix doesn't work on newer than 27.41 drivers....

I do have the NIC sharing irq 11 with GF card but taking the NIC out makes no difference.
I bin doing a bit of research around on MadOnion's site and I noticed that most ppls 3dmark score with exact same equipment were very similar to my own (4800 odd) (my GF2 used to give me 1600) and I believe I have tracked the problem down to a seriously flawed MotherBoard 8O
I have Biostar M6VCG MOBO and from what I've found seraching around on the web etc.. It's gotta be the WORST MOBO ever made :x
It seems to have serious problems with AGP 4x and ACPI so I guess I gotta go on the hunt for a new MOBO.
Anyone recommend a decent Socket 370 MOBO that takes 133 sdram, most of the ones I've seen now all take PC2100 or better, but i don't wanna have to buy new Dimms if I can help it :?

AGP 4x is a bit hit or miss. Can you drop the card to AGP 2x? You prob won't notice much difference.
I have a reasonable MBoard in my server. It is Tyan Trinity 400. It can take slot 1 or socket 370 and supports 133 SDRAM (I have a Gig fitted using 2 x 512Mb chips)
I got it from Maplins in case you have trouble finding it.
