Thanks for the heads up. The game looks nice and the second video is quite encouraging but I can't forget even Colonial marines had a decent trailer. I didn't buy Colonial Marines and so didn't get burnt by Sega. I know they got shafted by Gearbox but I'm not happy about forgiving them for shipping a complete piece of junk and happily taking peoples money. I'll need to see some very positive reviews first.

Awesome.

It's release day DLC essentially, but at least it's genuinely extra content and not stuff they've chopped out of the single player campaign to sell back to us.

Has anyone had a go on this yet? I played the first half an hour earlier, nerves already shredded and I haven't even met the alien yet :S

First impressions are very good.

I'll admit that the whole Giger/Scott vision of Alien had me gripped from the very start, so I'm a sucker for the franchise.

But setting aside my fan-boy status for a moment - I haven't so much been playing a game for the last few hours.... as it's been happening to me. Shattered and shredded.

Do you seriously think I'd be capable of 'aiming' ... period?

Bought it this morning knowing I'm gonna be crapping myself playing this. First impressions were not great tbh. The GUI shouted 'console port' and my heart sank. But now I'm into it and enjoying it. No aliens yet so underwear still in working order.

Day 2 Ran out of pants

Day 3 Ran out of cleaning products

Day 4 Bicycle clips and baggys

Best game of hide and seek ever. Love the atmosphere and tension. Im not one for enjoying sneak-em-ups but i'm hooked.

Quick update:
Suddenly found I was unable to load to a new level. AI just froze up on the loading screen. Turns out it's a bug in Nvidia's latest drivers 344.48. Rolling back to 344.11 fixes the problem. In case others are getting a similar issue (plenty of people are according to the Steam Forums) it might be worth a go to see if it fixes the issue for you.

I finally grew a pair and am now making good progress.....  I've found the rest of my team. There's quite a few twists and turns and fans of the original will enjoy an occasional trip down memory lane (no spoilers). The main criticism of the game was repetition and frustration, but that was from reviewers who probably played through in one sitting. I drop in and out as often as my nerves allow and the pace is just fine. Enjoy

Still stuck at the same point, it's actually becoming frustrating now.

There's some random jerk wandering around with a pistol, and once the Alien hears him it's damn hard to get away :/
Title: Alien: Isolation
Post by: smilodon on October 31, 2014, 08:33:19 AM
Do you know the route to get out. It's a bit convoluted but does include a vent which the Alien doesn't seem to use. That gives you some separation from it. Once I worked out where to go it was fairly straight forward. No spoilers but have you passed the cut scene towards the end of the mission?

So after I chucked my toys out the pram and ALT-F4'd, I took a beer break and had a Sopranos 'They pull me back in...' moment - and managed to escape that wretched Med Lab.

My winning strategy was to lob a noisemaker at the idiots with guns, and hide in a locker for 5 minutes while the Alien tore them to pieces :(

It's a solid strategy. I've managed to do similar myself. It's a damn shame the alien doesn't seem inclined to off the Androids in a similar way! Another tactic I've discovered that works well if the Alien is between you and the exit is to run at it, flame it and then as soon as you get to your feet, seriously leg it as fast and as far as you can. I've made it to a few lifts that way. It can also work if you still have places to go on that level, as the ALien which mighht be patrolling ahead will hopefully end up patrolling behind. This can allow you to sneak quietly off to your next objective.

Sad thing is there is worse and much harder stuff to come

A few tips, basically stuff that everyone except me probably worked out from the beginning...

You can't beat Working Joe's do death if they are attacking you. You can break free but you will need to use the charged stun baton on them. Otherwise they will catch your arm each time. Sneaking up and smacking them hard and fast with the wrench does work.

To replace batteries in the torch press and HOLD the F key, duh!

Don't use the same tricks on the Alien as it learns. By the end of the game using lockers became useless for me as it would enter an area and make a beeline for the locker I was in. Likewise it got less and less bothered by the flamethrower and ignored noisemakers.

Line of sight is a great way to avoid the Alien. It might seem counter intuitive but towards the end the only really effective way to make progress was to keep moving and keep something between me and the Alien. Sometimes I would get caught in the open but often it was the only effective way to get through a level.

Yup, great mission really enjoyed that one.

Now trying to trap the thing. Most action I have seen in the game so far, have already used the flame-thrower 3-4 times to try to make the Alien run away long enough for me to scuttle off and hide... and maybe half of those times I 'escaped', albeit temporarily.

Do wonder if I am less 'scared' of the Alien now I have fire... but let's see how long that fuel lasts eh?

Tut I think I agree with you so far.

Would have to have a proper sit down and think about what has been released this year to be sure, but AI is certainly up high in the list if not number 1.

Still playing it, just at the bit where the game 'should' have ended, and I am still enjoying it and actually feel very different now I have some temporary breathing room from our scary friend...

Will carry on and see how the rest goes from here, but so far I've been playing this game little and often, and loving it still.
The bit where I had to trap the Alien in the Gemini lab and escape the lab after being ejected into space was fantastic. In fact the whole part of the game from the moment you get the flamethrower and try to trap it is just brilliant. Tense, more action heavy than any other parts so far, and rewarding when it all goes 'well'.
So @ a LAN my friend "saves". Sadly this is a limited save game - current and previous.
Soooo, I redid missions 1 and 2.
Got cocky - found a schematic I missed 1st time around, and I think I found an extra ID tag.
Did I say cocky? Cock of the walk.

So, I finished mission 2 previously, no sweat. So I think "lets hunt for secrets" while the transport arrives.
I know this is safe as I did this previously.

Title: Alien: Isolation
Post by: Chaosphere on November 27, 2014, 12:51:49 PM
Yeah the Alien is randomly scripted. The game controls the levels it is present on, but once it is there its actions are (almost) entirely 'random'. It responds to what goes on in the game in terms of sights and sounds, and so on. A few set piece moments here and there do dictate certain patterns, but generally speaking it can be very hard to predict.

Post by: Chaosphere on November 27, 2014, 04:35:00 PM
Spoiler if you haven't got to the bit that involves the ship's reactor yet.
Wow ok so first of all the androids. Jesus. I thought I hated them already, and then they go and put on magic rubber suits and take away all of my useful weapons. That bit trying to gain access to apollo was not fun. And by not fun I mean seriously why did they put it in the game? This whole section of the game after the alien disappears is weak, and its mainly due to infuriating combat with the androids. I love the alien, love it. And I don't mind the occasional android thrown in every now and then to change things up, especially when combined with the alien (noise noise noise)... but I must have encountered maybe 20 androids in a row now, and I hate every single one of them. It is not fun. It is frustrating, and not at all in a good way.

I think a better approach would have been to just cut the length of this section down, and have very few hostiles in it (a much needed break?). If we just went straight from getting back onto the station down to apollo, then on to the reactor with little fuss, not only would it cut time but get rid of this frustrating android rubbish. I can't stress enough how much I do not enjoy this part of the game, when compared to the rest. It is slow paced, dull, frustrating, uninteresting... its just 1-2 hours of completely redundant filler that should have been cut.

Now, I have just entered the reactor, and I am actually happy to see the damn alien again. I can get back to playing the game I was enjoying. The reactor scenes are very cool, and I am sure I will somewhat forgive the game when I get further away from this weak section. I just wish they had cut it entirely, really is no need for it. Game of the year? Well, when it is good, its great. But when it is bad... its such a shame they put this sort of filler in, it really spoils what has otherwise been a fantastic experience so far.
Rant over...

I did find that bit slow, but there are a few clever ways to bypass some of the androids. H owever with most of them I just ran fast and dodged them. They're a lot more stupid than the alien and once out of sight I just ducked into a locker until they gave up looking for me. Not once did they try opening a locker door. Even when they watched me enter a dead end room with nothing in it except a locker! As I say it's easier if you just run through the left and right reactor rooms, but hardly immersive.

Normal mode,  I was told that it's naturally a hard game and that hard mode was really tough. You can change the hardness setting on there fly and turn it down for really tough bits.

If you get within grabbing distance you're toast. It's just that they don't run which can work to your advantage.
Title: Alien: Isolation
Post by: Chaosphere on November 28, 2014, 10:51:20 AM
Yeah blunt im doing it on hard too. Although for the bits I was ranting about smilo is right your only real option is to run. What frustrated me so much is I attempted stealth so many times only to end up getting caught, and at parts when you don't know where to go, getting caught can be a frustrating nightmare with 4 of them following you into every room.
Title: Alien: Isolation
Post by: smilodon on November 28, 2014, 12:11:27 PM
I think the game narrative suggests there are areas where you travel far away from the Aliens  location (to other spires?). It's not very clear but I think the idea is that in these sections you're safe from the Alien and noise, gunfire etc won't bring it down on you. The much if not all of the reactor section, from memory, is in an Alien free zone. I do remember a part where you can manipulate the environment to bring down a lot of Working Joes.... I'll say no more so as not to spoil it for anyone, but it's very loud.

You do seem to come out of stealth mode and into run around like a lunatic mode. I sort of found this a bit jarring as up till then I had played it stealthy and bold. Head down, keep quiet, keep moving. But definately quiet! Then it's all bash your wrench on the wall, draw the Joe's in, duck round the table and sprint to another room, duck in a locker, wait, repeat. The good news is once your past that it gets very, very good!

yes, very very good indeed.

I am just happy to be past the android bits... like you said, jarring!

Buy this game!

Also at a thousand million hours of game time - Elder Scrolls Skyrim £2.49! Two and a half pounds for a game that takes a minimum of 75 hours to complete properly and that on average is played for 350 hours! That's about 1 and a half pence per hour. Someone at Bethesda has obviously gone completely insane.

This is the single player RPG game which is a delight. I have heard that ESO is pretty dreadful.
