Title: Learning to play the Guitar
Post by: Jamoe on January 10, 2014, 01:34:40 PM
Well, I got my Christmas wish and the lovely wife bought be a Vintage V300. I finally got around to tuning it last night and will be getting the action lowered asap. I don't have an ear for this but to me it sounds great.

Can anyone recommend some good resources for teaching myself to play? (websites, books etc)

If I can keep interested I might consider a tutor in the future.

Rocksmith 2014 is a guitar tutor in the form of game. Basically plug your guitar into the PC and it tells you what to do.
You need the game and the lead.
Lib's got a copy and I think he's been having fun. Not quite up to Joe Satriani standards yet but getting close to Sid Vicious.

And also an electric guitar.

Apparently there are very good videos on YouTube for beginners, so my brother tells me and he can actually play.

I can't remember who was talking about RockSmith at the LAN, but that's why I got it after having a nice guitar sat gathering dust for 15 years. Now I also have a cable gathering dust as well, I intend to play with it a bit soon.

Sounds good, yea I've got an Accoustic Guitar, but I could get a pickup (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seymour-Duncan-SA-3SC-Single-Acoustic/dp/B0002E3B78/ref=pd_sim_sbs_MI_1) (might work).

Good luck with the new guitar and stick with it!

I too would recommend spending a bit of time looking around Youtube.  I have used it very often for learning bits of tab that I just couldn't figure out.

Never had Youtube when i was a lad.... It was all books and ears..and MTV

Thank god we have moved on... Books  I find start of well then tend to take a huge jump in skill at page 8 and you never look at them again.

They may not be to your taste but they take you through note by note at a slow pace. Learn in small sections sometimes its just a few notes till if feels natural. Loads of good tutorials on the tube for just about any song

Your fingers will not even reach where you need them to be at the start but it will come with time. Pick each note as clean as you can amd slow down, the tone is more important ,speed will come.
It can be frustrating. Im sure at some point you will fall out with your little finger for a while

I use http://audacity.sourceforge.net/  to slow stuff down im working on.

All guitar players should know the start to----- "smoke on water"---- "the f1 theme"----- "stairway to heaven"------

also TAB.........you will come across it. (Guitar hero on paper)

most stuff for guitar is now in a TAB format rather than sheet music. Learn to love it

Do learn scales and chords use them as a warm up... boring but will save time in the long run

If ya post up some stuff your learning or wanting to learn Ill have a bash myself

It may of been me talking about Rocksmith at the LAN, I have it and can recommend it, gets you playing very quickly and has a lot of "games" to help finger placement and scales. Not sure how good it is with an acoustic though, but as others have said there are a lot of resources on the net and TAB is definitely your friend.
