I've also got what I think are Steam problems. Whenever I start up the computer, Windows says there was an error checking the Windows registry and it has to restart to fix it. Which is annoying, but manageable.

The reason I blame Steam for this is that when I try to load it I get the following error:
STEAM caused an invalid page fault in
module STEAM.DLL at 017f:201f4cf6.

None of my other programs appear to be malfunctioing and I have no viri on my system. Do I need to reinstall or can I fix it by deleting the .blob file or some other solution?

Herodotus, have you checked the Steam website (http://www.steampowered.com) forums?  There are some reported problems as you describe with the latest versions of Steam.  Reinstalling graphics drivers appears to be one way of solving things, disabling AGP another.  Basically steam is at fault.  I guess it will be fixed at some point if the reinstall fix doesn't help.....

Also, as an aside, the latest version of Steam has caused a conflict with several existing viruses and trojans.  If you get errors then you should definitely scan for both thoroughly as there have been many crashes caused by the later versions of steam conflicting with the virus/trojan code.

delete the blob file. if that does not cure it then no harm is done as it will be recreated when you connect to steam.

It appears from this thread (http://steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45477&highlight=STEAM+caused+invalid+page+fault+module) that the blob file solution may nto work, but it is always worth a try.  But it appears you are not alone Herodutus.

Herodotus, having perused the steam forusm for a fgew minutes, the bulk of the problems you describe seem to be related to Win9X systems and those infected by the win32.parite polymorphic virus.  Do some scanning!

shotu, welcome to the forums, but always so sad to see a new member immediately suffering problems :(

Accorging to the steam forums (again) the strafe problem can be caused by badly made maps (with too many ents).  Does it happen on all maps?

Found a few trojans, but the software I've got can't clean them from the file. Sadly it's not the parite trojan.

Are the files c:\windows\mssys.exe and c:\windows\system\svcpack.exe essential for Windows or can I just delete the files?

Thanks for the help, btw.

The files you mentioned are infected by a trojan.  You need to get rid of them and then repair the windows installation.  Whether the trojan is the one I mentioned or not really doesn't matter, the one you have is every bit as likely to cause a probem.  It's sort of scary that you had a few on your system and didn't know    So this is what you should do now:

There are plenty of online and free anti-trojan software packages.  Do a google search and run one of them to rid the system of trojans.  I have run 'Anti-Trojan' as an example and it seems to work well.

Then boot from the windows cd and run the repair option.

Then make sure your AV software is up to date, AVG is a good free one.

Install a firewall if you do not have one.  ZoneAlarm is a good free one.  It will tell you what is dialling out or trying to access the internet from your machine, as well as what is trying to get in to your machine.

Sweep the system on a regular basis to ensure that no more 'infections' are caught.

Now run steam.

In the mean time, if you have been to any LANs recently it might be worth calling those who networked with your PC and getting them to check the status of their own systems, they may need a healthy dose of penicillin ;)
