Title: Facebook set to acquire Oculus VR for $2 Billion
Post by: TeaLeaf on March 26, 2014, 05:52:34 AM
Some matches are made in heaven.   This one however is still leaving me scratching my head.   Anyone need a fully 3D immersion of Farmville?

$2bn is a lot to pay for something like Oculus VR Inc and to me it smacks of Facebook not having a clue where its long-term future lies and just trying to do something with their cash.

The deal was for $400m in cash, the remaining $1.6bn was in Facebook shares.   Me, I'd be selling those puppies as soon as I could.

The news also strikes a blow to the possibility of Oculus coming to Minecraft.   Notch (the founder of Mojang who run code Minecraft) said this in a tweet:

Quote from: NotchWe were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus.   I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out.

My thoughts exactly. I wonder what the reaction will be in the SC camp.

I'm not sure either, but I've always been a bit sceptical of the VR aspect.   Until they find a way around having to click physical keyboards and mice, the VR world will struggle.   Strap on your headset, go dogfighting in SC and then find you need to use the one ability you could not fit onto a joystick or mouse button, so you have to flip up your VR headset, press the key/button and then you flip your VR headset down again only to find that you died in the intervening seconds.    Simpler games might work better, but still it's a problem they need to overcome.   They need to get to something like 'Minority Report' VR.

Personally whilst the Oculus purchase bemuses me, it won't affect me as I had no plans to buy one, yet.  If Facebook bought Naturalpoint (TrackIR) then I'd start to worry.   SC + TrackIR is where I think I'm heading.

I only object to the buyout as I have no time for FB. Luckily there are alternatives out there.
