Seven years ago the iPhone was a pretty cool new thing with little competition. Oh how that has changed!
Arstechnica has a great article here (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/06/building-android-a-40000-word-history-of-googles-mobile-os/) that is well worth a read.
It documents the history of Android in its short six-and-a-bit year life, right the way from Android 0.5 to today's Android 4.4. It's a fascinating review of the speed of development of the OS and a good retrospective of how we arrived at KitKat and the rate of penetration of new technologies.
To give it some perspective, the HTC Hero (the phone that imo created the much needed 'critical-mass' buzz around the Android system and catapulted HTC into the stratosphere) did not launch until some two years into the Android development cycle. The first HTC Hero's (mine included) came out with Android 1.5 Cupcake.
Doesn't time fly when you're having fun! You forget how young this technology is and how short a time ago we did not have something that today we take see as part of our daily life!
