Post by: vobler on August 06, 2014, 11:52:37 AM
We where discussing groups and alliances yesterday online, and here is the something from design archive:
Groups

A player can only exist in one of the following groups at a time:

All Players Groupâ€" Players in this group will be matched with each other as much as possible to ensure as many human players can meet and play together
A player’s Friend List and Ignore List is used automatically to indicate preferences in match making so that friends will be matched instead of others if a choice exists(though this is a fuzzy system so there are no guarantees)
E.g. In a nearly full session a player with more friends in the session than that of another arriving at the same time would mean the first player getting in and the second spawning a new session instead
Players can use an option to indicate they would like friends of friends to be included in the preference system described above (which basically expands their friends list for the purposes of preferences under the hood only)
Players playing on ‘Iron Man’ mode will only be matched with other ‘Iron Man’ mode players
Private Group â€" Players in this group will only be matched with other players in the same private group
Players can create their own private group and invite people into it
To help facilitate inviting players into a private group, players can be indicated as friends in game and can be selected easily for sending invites out too
Any player can be invited into a private group regardless of friend status so player name searching and direct in-game selection is possible
A player who accepts such an invite will be removed from their current group upon the next hyperspace jump and be placed in the private group of the inviting player
A player who refuses such an invite will remain in whatever group they were already in and the option to ignore future requests from that player during the current gaming session is presented
Players can only invite other players of the same type (normal, iron man) to a group
Players can save private group settings including players to invite to allow quick selection and set up of groups
A player can set an option to allow friends to “quick join” into their private group
They can change this option at any time
Players will be able to see on their friend list that other friends are in private groups and that some may have a symbol indicated they’re free to “quick join” into the group without needing an invite
The “quick join” option can be extended to allow friends of friends in freely also
A player wishing to join another player’s private group will have to message them asking for an invite as there is no way to formally request admission into the group
Players will thus typically set the “quick join” option if they don’t want the hassle of their friends having to message them when they want to join in with the group
Only the original private group creator can invite others into their group. They can also do the following:
Kick other players out of the group
Disband the group resulting in all the other players entering their own individual private groups with “quick joining” disabled (gives them the opportunity to play solo or decide to join the all players group)
Pass their leadership and thus all these options to someone else in the group
Upon disconnecting, logging off or leaving the group automatically passes leadership to the oldest private group member, i.e. the first player to accept an invite into the group that is still present
When creating a group the player creating it can decide how the group will react to crimes committed by players while in the group
The player can decide to either count only crimes committed against other players, or against AI ships
The player can decide if a player who earns a bounty is either kicked back into the all players group, or can be kept in the private group
Solo Group â€" Players in this group won’t be matched with anyone else ever (effectively a private group with no one else invited) with the following properties:
Players in this group are effectively indicating they want to be left alone and not disturbed by anyone else
By default group and friend invites are ignored but this can be enabled if desired
By default a player’s online status is hidden (set to offline) from others but this can be change if desired
A player in this group can still see when other friends come online and can message them
A player in this group can still receive messages from friends (possibly revealing the fact that they are online by virtue of return messages but still indicated as being offline)

As described above a player also has a Friend List that they can manage which helps facilitate inviting players into private groups and allow preferences to be taken into account when joining sessions:

A player can request friendship with others
An accepting player will add themselves to the player’s friend list as well as adding the player to their own list as well
A refusing player will remain off the other player’s list and the option to ignore future requests from that player during the current gaming session is presented
A player can remove a friend from their list at any time and such removal will also take them off that friends list at the same time
Requesting a friendship can be done inside and outside of the game client
Friends will be matched with each other as much as possible when entering new sessions
If a choice needs to be made between which players to allow access to a session the player with the most friend influence will trump a neutral or ignored player
Players Friend lists are based on player accounts, not player characters

A player also has the option to add players to an Ignore List which does the following:

Removes any friendship between the players automatically (players can’t be friends with players they ignore)
Ignores all communication from them in game
Ignores any friend requests from them
Is active across multiple gaming session until changed by the player (this is different from the options presented in the above sections as they only last as long as the current gaming session)
People on others ignore lists will not be favoured if a choice exists when match making players together
If all players in a session have the same player ignored then that player will never be able to join that session
If at least one player is neutral or friends with the ignored player above then they will be able to join that session providing there is no better suited players trying to get in at the same time when only one slot is available
If a person earns a bounty their ignore list and friend preferences won’t affect matchmaking, and bounty hunters will still be able to encounter the player, even if the bounty hunter is on the player’s ignore list
If a player is in a session with another player on their ignore list they will still receive messages relating to that players in game actions and pre-canned dialogue, such as declarations of piracy
If a player follows another player’s hyperspace trail, the ignore rules cannot be applied to them. The players will join their next session as a group
Players Ignore lists are based on player accounts, not player characters

In addition to the groups presented above a player can be a part of an Alliance with other players. This is a separate entity that operates within the boundaries of whatever group the players are in:

A player can only ever be in a single alliance at a time
Alliances allow players to indicate trust between themselves so they:
Can freely jettison and pick up cargo between themselves
Can fire upon each other without criminal implications
Gain the same criminal fine/bounty if one or more other members commits a crime
This only occurs if the player is in the same vicinity as the player committing the crime
Have the ability to slave hyperdrive systems together to make travel easier
Get matched as a whole during slaved hyperspace travel and if not possible spawn in their own instance at a location rather than splitting the alliance up
Alliances in the all players group allow those in the alliance to come across other human players as normal except the game is explicitly trying to keep the alliance together when they arrive at the same location through match-making
This is in addition to the normal preference system and operates by giving a much higher weighting to alliance members when determining preferences over friends for example
Alliances in a private group would only meet other players in that private group
Depending on the size of the group, players may typically be in an alliance with everyone else in the private group but multiple alliances can exist in a larger private group if desired
Creating an alliance is handled exactly the same way as creating a private group with the caveat that anyone in the group can invite other players (including non-friend players) into the alliance and no one is the leader
In the all players group any player can be invited into the alliance by any alliance member
In a private group only the players in the private group can be invited into an alliance by alliance members
Players can vote to kick an alliance member out of the alliance
After a set time limit the vote is closed and the majority is taken to decide the outcome unless all members have already voted or the required number of votes is reached
Players can leave freely of their own accord
Any criminal status or reputation earned as a consequence of other alliance members behaviour is kept after leaving an alliance

Here's a few pointers I found from experiencing the setup of Elite: Dangerous so far.

Joystick Setup: start with the keyboard and mouse default profile before customising your axes and keys on your joystick to do certain functions. Reason. The joystick profile will wipe many default key settings and I've yet to find anyone with a joystick that didn't need some sort of keyboard functionality. By doing this you can leave the keyboard maps default and only allocate axis or button assignments (buttons on the secondary slot to preserve the key map). Disable mouse for Pitch and Roll if you do this.

Speed presets: map a 0% and a 50% button on your joystick or on a very accessible key on the keyboard. The joystick moves you forward and backward so finding Zero speed is very tricky. Also 50% speed is important as it's the fastest turning speed you can get generally so essential for outflanking enemies.

More to come...

Further to Albert's excellent tip ...

What works for me is setting my joystick's top hat to control my thrusters. This makes docking (and manoeuvring inside the confined spaceport) much, much easier.

Because of the flexibility of the control setup the top hat can have multiple roles so can still be configured to navigate the menus etc.

What is the current "best" trade route for the Type 6?

Is the Assellus Primus to Ross 1051 route with Resonating Separators and Indium still profitable?
Will start early tonight and grind.... :-)

Currently, Terrain Enrichment Systems from Aulin to Pi-Fang (Brooks Estate) (1148cr profit per ton) or Combat Stabilisers from Aulin to Dahan (866cr profit per ton).

Brooks Estate is a very pretty garden-like station (O'Neil cylinder). Saving for type-9 so I can ramp up the profits and buy an Anaconda.

For the Type 6 that route served me well but there may be others that are better because that ship can single jump over 30LY (less with full cargo and weapons). There may be a starting point at the lower right edge of the map with a very profitable cheap to buy item that sells 2 jumps away but can recall it right now. But single jump the Ross to Assellus is great.

Title: Trade Routes
Post by: OldBloke on August 25, 2014, 01:46:47 PM
Just saw this on Reddit.

QuoteWhen just starting out or when very low on credits (i.e. you can't afford a Hauler with a full load of Agri-Meds from Aulin), go to LP-98 in a sidewinder. Once there, super cruise around and hop into any "Unknown Signal Source" you find (usually near planets and such).
When you find one with gold, scoop as much as you can hold. Be ready to gtfo, sometimes pirates pop in to blow you up. If pirates do jump in, hit boost (once is enough) and turn off Flight Assist (default keybinding is z) and put 4 pips into system. Activate your jump drive asap. Don't forget to retract your cargo scoop.
When you have a full load of Gold, go to I Bootis (via Eranin) to sell it. You need to dodge the Viper patrols outside the station from scanning you on your way in or they will blow you up for carrying stolen cargo. Once in station you will find the black market under "Contacts" and they will buy your gold at almost 5k a unit.
You can optionally dock in Freeport to sell your gold. Then you don't have to worry about NPC Vipers scanning you and blowing you up. Instead you have to worry about other players camping the station and the black market there being saturated with gold so they are not currently buying any.
When you have some 40k credits, buy a Hauler. Go to I Bootis and fill it with fish, go and sell it in Aulin. In Aulin, buy Terrain Enrichment Systems (?) and go back to I Bootis to sell them. If you cannot afford a full load of Terrain Enrichment Systems instead buy Agri-Meds (less profit but cheaper). It is more important to fill your cargo hold fully!
When you can afford a Cobra MKIII and 36 units of Terrain enrichment Systems and have at least 50k credits to spare, upgrade to a Cobra MKIII and keep going.
When you can afford a Lakon Type-6 and 100 units of Terrain Enrichment Systems and have at least 100k credits to spare, upgrade to a Lakon Type-6.
When you have enough to buy 100 units of Indium and have 100k credits to spare, go to Surya and use the trade route below until you can afford a Lakon Type-9 and have enough for 440 units of Indium and have 500k credits to spare, upgrade to a Lakon Type-9.

Start in Surya, buy Indium
Go to Ovid (via Magec if needed) and sell the Indium, buy Crop Harvesters.
Go to Magec, sell Crop Harvesters, buy Animal Meat, Coffee or Tea.
Go to Surya, sell Animal Meat, Coffee or Tea.
In a fully loaded Type-9 that's about 900k a lap.

Thought I'd share this profitable route with the group:

LFT 880 [Baker Platform]
- Beryllium (1353 per ton profit) or Gallium (1214 per ton profit)
via Nang TA-Khian
to Bolg [Moxon's Mojo]
- Crop Harvesters (345 per ton profit)
to Wyrd [Vonarburg Co-Operative]
- Tea (369 per ton profit)
via I Bootis
to LHS 3262 [Louis De Lacaille Prospect]
 - Consumer Technology (1263 per ton profit)
via I Bootis
to Ovid [Bradfield Orbital]
- Heliostatic Furnaces (104 per ton profit)
via I Bootis & LHS 3006
back to LFT 880 [Baker Platform]

Hauler makes 137,360CR , Anaconda makes 782,952CR and Lakon 9 makes 1,510,960CR per round.

Have they already got hull wear in the game then? I thought that was something coming in beta 2? Or do paint jobs just constantly sit at a slightly worn state even when brand new at the moment.

I kinda wanted the wireframe Cobra paint job, but i'm not paying £10 for it... I would have paid £3 maybe, a bit of a premium over the £2 other paint jobs cost individually, or £10 if it was a pack with a version for every ship that would be in the game, but not for just the one paint job...

Post by: albert on September 25, 2014, 03:38:24 PM
I don't think the wear is built into the game yet, just the paint job has that effect. I got the Viper pack and the Wireframe Cobra, I had a moment of weakness uncharacteristic of a tight 4rsed Scotsman! I also bought a 30th Anniversary T.

Spoke to Albert about this last night, but for everyone else....

I got the cash for a Hauler, but the limited range was bugging me, however with only 70,000 another ship was a way off, so I bought a 53,000CR Framedrive and upped my load from 48T to 75T, going from a class H to a class D.

Now I can jump 18.1Lyr fully laden and around 20Lyr on empty. I can travel the length of the available universe in around six or seven jumps without refuelling! Last night I was a system away from Albert, then ten minutes later I was over 100Lyr away!

But, there is a glitch/bug. After I bought the Framedrive, I set off from the station and tried to jump and.. nothing. Dead. Power? Blown Fuse? No idea. went back to space-dock and landed. Outfitting then had ZERO Framedrives and I had not much money. Stranded. Damn. After contemplating ship destruct, I went and made a cuppa (quitting to main menu while I did) with the intention of returning, and raising a support ticket.

When I came back and re-loaded the game, pow! My list of available systems was like a phone book! So launched and Framedrive spun up and I was 20Lyr away in a single jump! Awesome.

Nice info thanks, so it is the Frameshift drive upgrades that increases your jump distance ? do we know what that tonnage stat actually means ?

The tonnage is the weight the drive lifts = cargo + ship + outfitting. Since basic drive lifted 48T (8 being cargo) I guessed that more would be better and it was. 75T gives me double the range at least.

Its good to note that a larger cargo hold does not increase your overall weight until you fill it up. If you get 40 unit cargo capacity then you can take on the 50-60k cr missions for hauling. That's the quick route to upgrades. Just make sure the first time you go into the Bulletin Board you have the hold space for it, next time for sure the tempting mission will be gone.

So, i've made my way around the bugs and into a very mildly upgraded Cobra with 20t of cargo space, a Gimbaled pulse & Gimbaled multi canon, and i'm more or less back into Beta 1 "space", think i have about 80,000 cr.... and now i need to find a better Frame Shift Drive and find a nice area of the Beta 2 "pill" that has a mix of combat, trading and upgrade stock.... any ideas where to head to guys ?

I've not found the mission combat mix area yet. Yesterday my previously no dead zone joystick decided to drift horribly into the landing pad so tonight is driver clear out time. But get 40 ton of cargos space. 25 unit missions net you 55k cr

One "problem" i've found.... now your Rep' in an area reduces your cost of items, it makes sense to do a few trade runs around a small zone to increase your rep' and lower prices, i saved 30k on my Cobra doing this, but because upgrades come and go out of stock so frequently you really need to buy them when you see them, so unless they pop up in an area you've already traded a bit to increase your rep' you just have to pay the price as it is... it kind of detracts from the exploration a bit...

So yesterday i bought a new Frame Shift Drive for 170,000k as it was the 1st time i'd seen an improved one for my Cobra.. it upped my Max tonnage from 280-350, but made no difference to my jump range... so kind of a mix of panic buying on my behalf and not enough info on the FSD from Frontier made me feel a bit underwhelmed with my purchase.... 1st world problems i know, i just feel we're still missing some vital info...

Having said all that, i'm still really enjoying it :D

BTW does anyone know if/how we can scan planets with the basic scanner ?

I think the rep in an area thing is more luck than intention to be honest. Random is the word I would use actually. I found that when the price changes after a few minute after docking it's as if the game is correcting itself.

I found that in the home zone near Eranin and within 30LY you get the good missions and maybe that's because of the population size and more people means more hauler missions and more money. Outside that I was lucky to get 4K CR hauler missions, so I came back to the start and got a 60K CR mission immediately on arriving in a more populated place.

I upgraded my Frame Shift to an F4 and got over 15LY jump range. I also upgraded a load of other stuff in my Cobra:

Multi-Cannon (Bimbal) Scatter - C2 x2
Point Defence Turret
Power Plant - F4
Frame Shift - F4
Life Support - E3
Power Distributor - D3
Sensors - E3
Cargo - 2 x 16 and 2 x 4 Units

I'd like an intermediate discovery scanner but thats a cool half mill!

My stats are now:

Power Use: 9.17MW Current, 13MW Unladen
Cargo 40T, Fuel 16T, Mass 263 - 302 Max
Engine Limit 420T
Jump range 14.48LY Current range from 14.74 Max to 12.78 with full cargo.

Supposedly the 2.05 patch is primarily to address the long load times into the game (both before the splash screen on initial launch and into the game proper) and between instances (the long pauses when exiting supercruise etc), so I really want to find out if they've managed to get anywhere with that. It's probably the single most jarring element of the game for me at the moment.

Either i have low expectations for those loading screens or they weren't affecting me, certainly no discernible difference to me in 2.05 anyway.

The load times and jump exit times are noticeably better now. Decided to go for a Type 6 because I wasn't getting richer fast enough in the Cobra. Now im getting 70K CR per trade and have already upped my power parts, FSD, thrusters, sensors and cargo hold (98T). Asp is looking far less impossible at under 4mill trade in now 😃

I wish we had the option to preserve the load out if we go back to previous ships. Took ages finding all the parts for the Cobra.

Nice 2 way trade run going on right now LFT 1446 station name Bosch Settlement with Beryllium netting a profit of over 1300CR per unit when sold at Bacquerel Gateway Alrai System. Take Gold (yes there is loads of it!) back to LFT 1446 and net similar amounts. I got 82K CR for a 2 way run with my 32 Ton Cobra! Maybe even get a mission for Gold at the destination station!

Warning, on returning to 1446 watch for the almost black star you enter the system next to, for too closeness! It's practically invisible.

Check this out and maybe turn AO to off on Elite to stop the lag in Frame Shift. Then turn on SSAO which is what nVidia call DSR and is a low CPU alternative although I haven't found it anywhere yet in the nvidia settings so any ideas let me know.

Very good video.

My trading strategy and findings (Wall-o-text incoming!) (http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/2nadkd/my_trading_strategy_and_findings_wallotext/) (self.EliteDangerous (http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/))

submitted 15 hours ago by PvtHopscotch (http://www.reddit.com/user/PvtHopscotch)Hopscotch
Starting out
I won’t get super in depth here as the “how” isn't as important as the end state. Even then, this is only a suggestion to make life a little easier while looking for trade opportunities.
Basically, the first thing I would suggest is grinding simple trade or missions till you can afford a Hauler and a better FSD. Granted, even a Sidewinder with a better FSD will function for the most part but the expanded cargo and jump distance potential of the Hauler personally makes it the better choice, even before starting actual dedicated trade. The reasons for this, aside from the obvious, is because my methods do require you to actually find systems and then investigate which can mean lots of jumping and the longer your range, the less tedious it becomes.
Also important â€" Learn!
It may seem obvious but the single best thing that has helped me is learning more about the different economies and getting a better understanding of what they need and what they produce. I will admit that even now I’m still no expert but the fact that I know generally what commodities each type of economy deals in, it makes looking for profit much easier. This is vital to my next/first step in the actual process since it gives you the ability to look at systems in the Galaxy map and determine if they are potential candidates for good routes.
The Actual Process/What I've learned
The initial process involves figuring out which systems are worth investigating. Obviously this is done via the Galaxy Map. The primary things you’re looking at are:

POPULATION
Under the View Tab in the galaxy map, set the population min slider to around 66% and then bring the max slider to around the same setting but a bit higher. This hides the low population systems and gives you a good visual representation of population size of the bigger ones, especially when zoomed out on the Galaxy Map.
I've been working off the idea of the higher the better (in the Billions) but anything in the realm of 500+ million will likely have good yields in something. If you check in the system view, look at the stations and look for Large, Very Large and Huge Population in the station description as well as the word Wealthy (Though I’m still trying to determine EXACTLY how Wealthy plays into the results but I’m still collecting data/examples).
Now the reason why I do this is because your best trading routes are going to be from stations with HIGH SUPPLY to stations with HIGH DEMAND and thus far it’s been my experience that high population systems/stations are the only consistent way of determining where you will find this. You can still make decent profit off trading MEDIUM SUPPLY to HIGH DEMAND or HIGH SUPPLY to MEDIUM DEMAND but it’s not ideal but worth keeping in mind for follow on trips or more complex routes.
ECONOMY TYPE/S
After you have the population slider set, you then can start filtering economy types to find potential candidates. This is where the knowledge of the items each individual economy offers is useful. For example, I personally have been starting my searches with Refinery economies because they more often than not, have all the metals, with the exception of Palladium and Platinum, in high supply which usually have the best average profit margin (Gold for example between a High Supply to High Demand is >=1k Cr profit per tonne).
Once I've found a candidate, I will then unfilter economy types based on what I want to trade. In this case, since I want to move metals, I start with Industrial, High Tech and Terraforming. You may need to play with the population sliders to see a few more systems but ideally you’ll be moving between high population systems. So finding a cluster of them in close proximity is ideal if only because of jump limitations with a full cargo hold.
Now one thing to keep in mind is if there are no systems of those types close by or they are low population, all is not lost. If there is a large cluster of High Population systems around your starting point, the fact that some systems have multiple economy types can make it all better. For example, I was making my initial money off a high supply refinery moving gold to a high population Agriculture/Terraforming system. The single Terraforming station within the sector had high demand for gold and had I just dismissed the system based on filtering out Agriculture I would have missed it.
DISTANCE CONSIDERATIONS
Another thing to keep in mind is distance between systems, since if you max out a hauler at 22 cargo capacity, your jump distance will obviously suffer with a full hold. Also worth looking at is the individual stations distance from the main star. I tend to stay away from multi star systems where the stations of interest are located around the secondary or tertiary star because screw 100K Ls distances. Not always the case granted but often enough to keep an eye out for.
Now granted some of the distance considerations are based on personal preference since some people hate travel, others don’t mind it. Things being closer do allow you to make money faster however.
The “work” Portion
Now once you've used the above and found potential candidates the actual work part starts. Make your way to the identified starting system and once there, investigate each station with a commodity market. Now you can hand write, make a spreadsheet, whatever you want but you’re probably going to want to record some information. If you so desire, you can record the prices, demand and supply of everything but it’s not necessary in my opinion.
Here’s what I do. I scroll through the list and record the items it has in high supply and then what it has in high demand. I do ignore certain items regardless of demand/supply like scrap, waste, etc since the profit off them even at best is maybe 50cr. I do this for each station in the system with a commodity market, regardless of economy difference or otherwise. This is because two Wealthy Huge Population Industrial stations in the same system can and often do have slightly different supplies and demands.
Once I got the first system done, I then start investigating the other systems, visiting the stations and recording the notable demand and supply of commodities. How far out you investigate depends mostly on how far you’re will to travel. I personally try to keep it within a jump or two, fully laden.
After you’re satisfied with your information collection or found the jackpot you can start looking through it and determining your best profit. How simple or complex you make the route is entirely up to you. In my example above, my initial money was made moving Gold but it was only one way, so it was kind of boring and inefficient. Right now I’m working on a multiple stop route that is far less boring and is making me at least some money on each stop.
END
So there it is, that’s been my method so far and it’s working out pretty well. I’ll admit that it does require some of the Spreadsheet Commander stuff that some people dislike but really how much of that you do is up to you. I’m personally going a little more in depth than needed because I’m trying to get a better understanding of how the market/trade system functions so I can contribute some to the wiki (what’s random, what’s determined by economy, wealth, population, etc).
On that a few things of note that I've learned to be true, at least within my data sample:

As I said, this is all based on my observations and findings. Though it has been consistent for me, when you take into account the sheer number of star systems at play my data set is pretty small so things could very well be different elsewhere. So if anyone has noticed anything counter to what I've found or in addition to it, please do share! Like I said, I kind of want to contribute to the wiki so the more accurate this information the better but I figured I would share what I have found in case it could help some fellow traders.

Title: Running out of fuel - no distress beacon button!
Post by: ArithonUK on November 26, 2014, 10:27:17 AM
Okay, don't blow yourself up with self-destruct! The beacon is now automatic!

Quote.. it happens automatically, but you need to completely drain both  your main tank and your reservoir. This can take a while as you may have  a small amount remaining in the main fuel tank (although not enough to  jump) which will top up your reservoir when it empties.

Just point yourself in a direction and continue super cruising towards  it, you'll burn fuel faster in Super Cruise and if you're moving then  you'll reduce the risk of interdiction. When you're close to emptying  out your tank be sure to drop your speed to <1000 km/s to prevent [hull]  damage when you drop out of Super Cruise.

You should be approached by another ship, as previously, but be prepared to pay over the odds for your refill.

The fuel will likely cost a lot less than ship replacement insurance if you have upgraded your ship in any way. If not, self-destruct and select a free Sidewinder. Your cargo will be lost though, which like upgrades, could cost you dearly if you're stuck without a fuel station or left with a fuel scoop and no viable sun to scoop from!

I have finally sorted my connectivity problems. I've been using TP-Link Powerline connectors for the past 7 years without problems until Elite was resurrected.
I decided to try  a CAT cable between my Sky router and the PC and the connection has remained solid. However SWMBO is not to happy with the cable snaking up  the stairs, so I've ordered a new wireless card and hope that will do the job.

Good to hear Bob.

I did an exercise with a powerline setup my mate gave me as he had no luck with it. I basically plugged one next to the router and then proceeded to plug the other one on every power point in the house and do a speedtest on it. Remarkable what the differences were. Small bedroom, 20Mbps, with a 150Mbps powerline adapter, second socket on the same wallk point, 45Mbps! Opposite side of the wall, like 10 inches away from the first 2 sockets, 60Mbps. Down stairs lounge, 130Mbps, so it get used for the TV. I run a cable for gaming, all the way down the stairs! And she who must be obeyed seems fine with it as it's tidy. I simply avoid all wifi related goods for gaming, no mouse, no keyboard, game controllers, networks, all wired.

Title: Jump Navigation Plotting
Post by: albert on January 01, 2015, 12:10:48 PM
I assumed everyone would know this but actually it's not obvious.

Under the Galaxy Map, Navigation you can choose Fastest OR Economical as your plotting option. If you are on a long journey, choosing Economical will make the trip a long affair, so choose fastest. It could be the difference between 2 and 8 hops even for a 15LY trip.
Title: The slowest sat-nav...
Post by: ArithonUK on January 02, 2015, 09:57:32 AM
When selecting the galaxy map, from when you open it, the system starts downloading route-plotting data from servers based on your current ship statistics (weight, cargo, jump range, etc.) working outwards in every direction from your current location.

You can, when zoomed out slightly, see this tree grow incrementally. Fast at first, then slowing down as the volume of space increases and, as a consequence, the number of systems increases exponentially. It will keep going as you watch, mapping out as far as 100 Light Years. But... this could take several minutes in real time, depending on many factors including server-load at the time. It does keep going in the background while you are in system view.

"Economic" will plot the shortest jumps available, while "Fastest" plots the most direct route. The quantity of fuel used depends on the distance of each single jump and the efficiency of your frame-shift-drive. A short jump like 6Ly uses one "unit" of fuel on an Eagle with a higher class FSD, but a longer jump of 8Ly might use twice that amount of fuel - even though the journey is not twice as far. So on longer journeys, or with short-range smaller ships, consider using "Economic" as the better option.

In an upgraded Lakon Type-6 with a 28 Lyr jump range, you can travel 100Lyr in four or five jumps, but you could use 75% of your fuel, yet travel 300Lyr making "Economic" jumps and barely use 20%.

This is why (for small ships especially) a fuel-scoop is a good option to consider if you are galaxy hopping to explore or make rare trades.

Title: Jameson Memorial Reputation (the Pilots Federation)
Post by: albert on January 12, 2015, 08:05:29 PM
So I decided that getting allied with the Pilots Federation at Jameson Memorial Station in Shinrarta Dezhra (Founders World) would be fun.

What I didn't realise is that a mix of missions and trade routes in the area could net a fortune and also get the desired Allied status:

Jameson Memorial has two factions, The Pilots Federation and The Dark Wheel, both democratic law abiding factions.

Nearby systems are ripe for trading: LFT 926 (Industrial goods), Nuenets (mined goods) and Skeggiko O (Has aggri goods)

Quite often there's a delivery mission to LFT 926, so you take some cargo and the trade goods you're give. Also pickup as much ore and food collection missions. Hop from LFT 926 with industrial cargo to Skeggiko O and sell, pick up food for the mission and some other aggri goods and back to Jameson. I was making about t600K a run in my Python.

Have fun!

So what is it?
It`s how to drop out of super cruise to be in front of the "letterbox", and not be lurking behind the damn station, and wasting (a lot) of time hunting for the letterbox (lol is you see me doing this)

The guy gives the theory, and practical examples of how to do it, i wish i knew this last week!

FYI, Anaconda point of view, so this works!

Interdiction and you

For the new pilots our there here is some simple advice, that may keep you alive for longer....

Once the pirate (YHAAR!) has started his interdiction and various insults, throttle back to zero and submit to it; the reason follows...

If you try to escape the interdiction and fail, your frame shift drive incurs a large penalty of roughly 30-40 seconds. This is more than enough time for the pirate(s) to shot your beloved ship our of the void...
However, by submitting to the pirate your frame shift drive only incurs a 10 second cd, which gives you a great advantage, not him (as he has the 30 sec cd).

Scenario is thus:
After dropping out of super cruise, you are BOTH disorientated.

Do the following.
1. Check radar, make sure the enemy is behind you, not to the side or front
2. Put 4 pips to engines
3. BOOST, BOOST, BOOST and get the hell away from him (sometimes them)
4. Engage frame shift asap
5. type suitable insult in chat bar
6. continue to destination

Most important, listen to his advice DONT PANIC![video=youtube;ZR6wok7g7do]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR6wok7g7do[/video]

How to explore
Plot your nav course as per usual and jump into a system of your choice. Once here use the fire button for the Advanced Discovery Scanner (you set these in the fire groups, default key no.4), watch the bar go up and BRROOOOM, your ship will discover x objects, if there is anything in the system.
Press no.1 and Nav lock onto one of these objects in your location menu, get close (roughly 3LS) and it`ll “examine it”, this takes about 10 seconds so don’t go too fast and over shoot. After examining it you will get information about what it is (gas giant, rock/ice planet etc).

If it is a planet, slow down and you can now use the fire button for the Detailed Surface Scanner Detailed, use it and wait for it to VROOOM and your done.
Congratulations commander, you have found a rock in space and gathered information for the faction of your choice. Yes, this means you will gain “some” rep with them for selling them your discoveries, and potentially a lot of creds!

So after a few hours on Power Play last night we're a bit confused but getting there I think.

Everyone pledged allegiance to Edmund Mahon who focuses on expansion through trade agreement and financial success.

It was clear that BD+3 2373 our homeworld was proving to be a good hub to find trades and we set about trying to combine high yield trading with power play merit earning.

First of all we hopped to a system that was being Fortified. Fortification requires us to pick up items from the Power Play Contact in a station inside the fortifying system and take these back to Gateway, the homeworld of Mahon.

So then we thought let's prepare Borasetani for Exploitation. To do this we had to pick up 100 trade agreement documents from a fortify or controlled system (not another exploited system like BD+21). And we did it, Borasetani is prepped!

Correction!!!! Wrong - So now can we fortify BD+31? The test this morning is to take exploit merits from Holiacan to BD+31 whilst making 2500k profit a ton! ***

Correction 2 wrong again!
- There is a 15LY Exploit radius around controlled systems so you can only pick up the merit items from the "local" control ssytem and take it 15LY to a system to exploit, not to another system 15LY further on. Not necessary see below.

Correct:
You should check the Power Play section under the Galaxy Map and click one of the 3 tabs, prep, Expansion or Control to find out which systems are available for taking over. The only exception to that rule is that you can prep any system like we did with Borasetani and it will appear under the Preparation tab.

So merits and trade profit aplenty!

Rules are join forces with Mahon and find a trade route between either a Fortify or Control System and one we want to prep or exploit. [emoji41]

I did too, and got my self a DBE. I'm finished with grinding.
I will join you some time to find out more about Powerplay. When is the official weekly ED night?
Anyway will try to be on tonight a bit, as I am "home alone".... :-)
Thanks

I decided top build myself a decent mining ship...
Que federal dropship http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=704,0_g0_gmpUH9WH9W5TQ5Rs5Rs,2-A0A07_8SA06u6k,0AA08c08c7go0a65Sc03w (http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=704,0_g0_gmpUH9WH9W5TQ5Rs5Rs,2-A0A07_8SA06u6k,0AA08c08c7go0a65Sc03w)

The price is a bit high at 31mil creds, but you can get something similar with an Asp, if your creds dont stretch that far.http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,0__0__0__0__H7yH7y5QS5QS5Rr5Rr,2-8S8S7_6u6u8S8I,0AA08c7Pc5Sc0a603w03w (http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,0__0__0__0__H7yH7y5QS5QS5Rr5Rr,2-8S8S7_6u6u8S8I,0AA08c7Pc5Sc0a603w03w) This will set you have 15mil, and is a pretty decent ship. you can change the mining lasers to class 2, and this will alow for faster mining, but i suspect you`d have to upgrade the power distributor also to handle the load.

I did the mining belt in our home system, and got about 185k of minerals in a few hours of messing about, which is a LOT more than any previous outings, although there seems to be an issue with the collector drones dying after 1 load.

So i then decided to head out to Disci, and jump in to the low intensity RES, i dropped out 40k from the action and gradually worked my way inward....
There a LOT of rock, thus much faster mining (i have 2x 2D mining lasers) and the cargo was racking us fast (was).. as i got closer to the action i saw several fights breaking out...
Then it happened... a Python and 2 viper buddies decided i looked tasty! Cue a 5 min fight, dropped shields and damaged hull, cargo hatch- they went straight for the cargo (greedy they are).

So things calmed down, then another python decided i`m on the menu...i decide to try and leg it, as my hull is beat up and the cargo hatch is nearly dead, cue dead cargo hatch, and loss of several thousands of minerals!

Three (3) fed Anacondas jumped in and helped me kill the git.

Overall mined was about 140k, but about 80k was rescued, but i got 285k off bounties :P

Moral of the experience, do not go alone, or if you do, stick to the outer limits of the RES - as in 40k past the jump point!
For those who want to try it- take a LOT of limpets, i didn't bother with the prospector so i could naab +4 tons.

If we decided to go in as a wing, i recommend a min size ship of an asp, due to cargo restrictions.
If you decide to bring an Anaconda to the fight, make sure you have a 4A refinery + 3A Limpet controller, as it only takes 1 ship to blast the ore off, and the big ship is a tight squeeze in the rocks.
So there is a Lot of cash to be made off bounties and ore!

Edit: There are some SERIOUS rewards for finding certain ores, the price is usually about 10x the normal value!
I was asked to find 4 tons of Osmium (only found from mining), which is worth 28k, and they offered 296k for it! There is also some mission for find paladium, but this is easy to find, although the smaller stations usually stock it, and again i landed about 600k for several tons (3 missions) as well as making profit off trading with the station.

So CHECK out the bulletin board before you wander off into the void!

So yes, your mining ship will cost a damn fortune, but if we teamed up and jumped into a RES, we could make a serious killing (literally) off ore and bounties, but this is the reason why i made a damn hard ship to mine with, as i had a suspicion that the RES mining would be tough, just not that tough due to the huge armour boost to all ships!

Following on from Ranaulf's advice, the missions to take 3 or 4 Palladium or Osmium to earn 300K are generally handed out by the local factions, independent especially I noticed. This only became obvious because they were off limits to me as the missions required friendly or allied status which I obviously have by default with the 3 major factions. So if you want lots of good missions, try and not annoy anyone in the homeworld.
Title: Ranking up - the new grind
Post by: Ranualf on July 22, 2015, 12:42:10 PM
Since i have defected to the Disney princess, i decided that i would like to have a higher rank (now Viscount), there are rumors that the larger ships (Corvette and Imp Cutter) require a high rank in order to unlock them- which actually makes a lot of sense.
Cutter- Rank req: Duke
Corvette- Rank Req: Read Admiral
I have done a LOT of smuggling and fetch me this item missions. However after reading a post today about, it appears that FD have moved the goal posts... and the football pitch is now 200 miles long...

A very informative piece from Kobune about the ranking system
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=165258 (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=165258)

And a nice way to accelerate your rank, if you have sufficient cash from Samosa.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164309 (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164309)

It seems that FD have implemented a hidden rank system, as explained in link 1. And that after patch 1.3 they "fixed" the bugged rankings, but there are still a lot of accounts out there that are bugged, and it is recommended that you contact FD to ask about your account status if you fail to rank up.
This is a very frustrating process, as doing a few hundred charity missions only to discover your rank is locked, due to a bug... is not very user friendly :/

Either way i thought i would share this information with you about the ranks and rumors of the ships locked behind them

Fly safe out there.

I also found this handy guide, looks like Alioth was a good place to get a permit!
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=122593 (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=122593)

Additionally i have ranked up to King with the Empire now, by running missions out of FEHU.
For Federation rep i run missions out of ROBIGO.

Please note Robigo is an outpost, and thus only small or medium ship allowed.

Hi All,

I found this site that might give some of us who are clueless about Engineers in the game a starting point:

http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers

It seems a very useful way to level up with engineers is to give them exploration data. 500K of data can get you to lvl3 without even ordering an upgrade.

Also you have different jobs to do to also level up, like bounty vouchers for gunnery upgrades. etc.

So I did about 600K worth of exploration and handed this in with the Engineer, Elvira and I reached 76% into Level 2 with her. Seems this is going to be a grind. I then have to find lots of materials, I have enough for a Level 2 FSD but want level 5 so need to go mine, buggy and wake scan.

Felicity Farseer is far more receptive to Exploration data and offers most of the same modifications as Elvira.

Also, on her station you can buy Class 2 & 3 Enhanced Thrusters without having to unlock them. That 800m/s Sidewinder could be yours...

Might seem like a botch job but for sure having another dozen buttons on your HOTAS is a win all round for space games.

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/5q10vr/cheapest_hotas_modification_ever/

The likelihood of your controller having enough keys for s sim is low, get a dozen or so more cheaply is a win all round.

Speaking of mods for joystick based games. I have a setup where I have 2 of these: http://cpc.farnell.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?pageSize=25&st=pro+signal+pole+mount&catalogId=15002&categoryId=700000007652&langId=69&storeId=10180 so it clamps onto the arm of the chair and the plate faces upwards then has strong velcro to hold the controllers in place.

I was thinking of getting some sort of shelf that I could place on the plates rather than have the sticks permenantly on there and it would allow me to place a mouse or keyboard on the shelf and make it easier to reach these when in game.

Anyone know of a lap tray or lightweight shelfing material that has a soft surface?

I keep looking at buying a BBI-32 (http://www.leobodnar.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=205), you can then basically do anything you want to build and make up different configs.

It basically gives you the ability to build anything with up to 32 binary inputs, so buttons, rotary encoders or switches.

If you google it there are plenty of SIM sites out there with peoples own projects.

Me too. However, I'm hoping that a combination of Roccat Power Grid and Voice Attack will negate the need to have something as industrial as that.

I think the trouble I have with voice attack is a) the wife takes the p!ss out of me when I'm speaking into it and b) if I've got a mouth full of nuts or a beer happening it's tricky. Oh and it struggles with my slurring Scottish droll. :)

I bought a skate board deck today. I'll be trying to use this as a platform for my flight gear onto my VESA mounts on the arms of the chair. I was just passing a skater shop in Amsterdam and I thought why not, they're thin, strong and light, and wide enough to give plenty space plus slightly curved so stuff won't fall off it easily. â,¬30, a lot cheaper than a posh gaming lap desk and a lot better finished than a piece of nasty MDF.

I plan on having Joystick1 -- Game Claw -- Tablet with Power Grid -- Mouse -- Joystick2 all on the board tonight :D

My Thrustmater HOTAS X (cheapo stick, bought for £40 a few years back) has enough buttons IF you use the majority of the buttons on the throttle as modifiers for the flight stick.
The problem I have now is one of memory :)
