just had a play of it, took ages to load but its an alpha after all, 4 clases vs a big monster.
might be a good alternative to l4d with the right setup.
After a few quick rounds, seems to be real potential here! Few concerns largely relating to its possible console origins, but otherwise for an alpha it is doing ok...
It's great fun, but:
1. You can't have a full party of 5 (4 hunters & 1 monster), and the matchmaking for a party of 4 is basically broken right now. Finding a game with friends is a huge PITA.
2. Performance is very choppy - some serious optimisation work to be done there.
I tried this alone the other day and got put in with a group of friends I think. I spawned as monster 100% of the time even though I moved it to prio 5 and got absolutely dominated no matter what I did. So either they were super good, I was super terrible or playing a monster is really hard in the start.
After an hour or two I finally got to evolve my monster to stage 2, but it was still no match for the hunters. In my opinion the maps need to be bigger, or the monster needs to be stronger at stage 1. It is pretty frustrating to play monster at the moment. Not like the good old AVP games, where the marines actually had something to be scared of. The monster can climb and all, but that doesn't really make a difference when the hunters can bloody fly with jetpacks :rolleyes:
I also found playing as the monster super difficult, and I don't think the game does a great job of explaining how to play him...

I'll explain it. RUN! That's all you need to know. If the hunters catch you before you are stage 3, you are dead. I specced up charge and leap to start, and used those to run away and hide. What I found useful was to hide, let the hunters go past, then follow them with sneak and eat what they killed.
This sounds like an interesting game to play. Assuming they get the balance right I'd be interested in playing. Right now though I'll leave it to you brave souls to bug fix :D
My single biggest concern for this game is in its longevity... it will struggle if they don't find some way to keep us coming back, as the basic formula has the potential to get old fast... Of course, the alpha only presents 1 game mode, so maybe I am being too quick to judge.

I'm not rushing into it. I had mixed feelings with the alpha. It has potential but I'm unsure of its diversity and thus longevity. L4d worked so well because of the workshop, if evolve doesn't come with something similar I'm not convinced it will be worth it in the long run. Also, I don't know anything about any lan support. I will wait for reviews and actual player impressions.
