Title: Sulky's FSX Optimisation Guide
Post by: sulky_uk on November 22, 2014, 12:47:24 PM
I was going to post this as a one parter but ive decided just to update it as I write more

Believe it or not even though FSX is 8 1/2 years old is still can run like a 3 legged horse in the derby..ie pants!!

I have tried various tweaks over the years and hopefully i can pass some of these onto your guys.
First off though if you do anything in this guide or ones that I link to its entirely at your own risk...
Before you do anything start FSX
go into options and carry out these setting dont worry that i have a different gfx card or screen res. if you dont have preview dx 10 then you need to install sp1 and sp 2, google is your friend here.

All of us have fairly hefty PC's so you should be able to use the settings below if you use an external AA controler then untick anti aliasing

move onto the aircraft page

now the scenary

and the weather

and finally traffic..this is an important one as it can slow down you fsx, have aircraft densitys off unless you are flying offline

as i can only post 5 pics per post, i will make a 2nd post. Please dont reply untill i have completed that

Now pick a flight, aircraft- Microsoft 737 airport - Manchester  weather - clear, time and season summer and time set to day now click fly.

Wait for the game to load and just sit on the runway for a minute, then press  Shift z 3 times till you see your fps, when tweaking FSX its best to have a set airport aircraft location etc so you can see if things have improved. Make a note then shut FSX down.

Ok so thats how we baseline our Sim.

so what next

the first place in my opinion to visit is this site

http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Before carrying out the tweak below, you will need to find your FSX.cfg file. It will be in your users/appdata/roaming/microsoft/fsx. NOW MAKE A COPY and rename it fsxold.cfg or something like that. Make sure  the original is still in there. This is so if you dont like the auto tweak tool then just delete the fsx.cfg and replace it with the fsxold.cfg and delete the old in the name.
The guy who designed this tool is a genius. and its free, unless you want to donate. It reads your fsx config and by the settings you choose, ie how many cores you have etc, it adjust it for your computer. It also adds a few other tweaks that the community have said are required to get the most out of your FSX. I have used this for years and never had any issues, in fact one of the recommended for my computer was to set my fans speeds higher on my 770GTX. Its so simple just follow the instructions and bobs you auntie. Now load your flight that you used for the fps reading and see if how you got on.
If you Didn't like it you can always delete the FSX.cfg and restore the fsxold.cfg, (by deleting OLD in the name)

So did it improve..ok so lets look at something else

This one usually happens when you are switching views or you have used accel mode (ie 8 times speed etc)

QuoteThe UIAutomationCore.dll seems to be essential for FSX and Windows 7/8. Otherwise, you may be getting the same "Fatal Error" messages followed by a shutdown or a ctd  that is hurting a lot of other FSX users, as evidenced by numerous people like me reporting the problem in various forums on the web. One place where it may be downloaded is

http://http://www.mediafire.com/?mik2mlqdz1w

After saving it to your desktop or a folder, right click on extract all, extract the zip file, then using Windows Explorer drag the UIAutomationCore.dll into the main FSX directory. Apparently, FSX is a 32 bit program, and the UIAutomationCore.dll makes it work like a 32 bit program, thus preventing the fatal error messages that can come after serveral hours into an otherwise very satisfying fight. Moreover, for some users it speeds up their frame rates, and improves their display usage over dual monitor setups. !
thanks to the author - Jim French

ok run the default flight and see if it made any differences.

So thats the end of part 1..2 to follow soon
