I'm really digging this. I think TL and other were right right though. I think it'll be FAR more fun to earn and equip one of these as an Org. Maybe not even moving it, but just using it as a base while in a particular system (overseeing mining ops or salvage). Whatever we all choose to do with it though - it'll be a great long-term goal.
I didn't realise that the hangar (er-- whatever) would be quite this limited. I think the Idris definitely comes into its own here! I expected it to have at least the same capacity as the Idris - unless i'm wrong. Either way, for me thats put a pretty big downer on it for me. Its not that I was expecting it to be a carrier or anything, just a bit disappointing.
The modular nature of the ship is quite exciting, with the idea of being able to switch things out it'll be an excellent addition to the fleet... in time ;)
Everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that this is an online game. If a Javelin is found, expect other fleets mobilising to secure them.
The hard truth is, other orgs who are buying org capital ships will have the edge against anyone else. Don't expect to compete with them and win. And the competition for these salvageable capital ships is literally the entire world.
There is a way to instance yourself to primarily PvE actions. Also, I think that the Javelin will be available with in game currency. The PU has the vast multitude of different play styles in mind in its creation. Some people enjoy PvE or even role-playing. I can imagine that they'll want to get some of these (or something similar) and go star-trek crazy on it. If we're honest, I think the Javelin will be manned by us (say the 28-30 people needed) fairly regularly. The rest of the time it'll be a static meeting place.
Now it has been stated that there may be PVP instances that have things as big as the Bengal Carrier in them. Not sure how thats going to work, but my point stands. Massive, one-off, ships may be instanced for PVP, some others won't be. Primarily though, many of these ships will be available for in-game currency, others won't be. Time will tell and all that.
We really shouldn't be thinking about how to aquire one of these ships. We should be concentrating on how we can blow one up! It would look spectacular streaming flames and debris behind as it streaks down through the atmosphere of some alien world

Can we stop with the snipes about people buying expensive Star Citizen assets please. If you want to pay $2500 for a Javelin then that's your business and really nothing to do with the rest of us. I can't afford one. I'm also not buying any Star Citizen assets for real money prior to game launch. So what?
People who buy ships this far in advance of the game are simply continuing the Kickstarter concept and funding the game up to it's recently announced target of $100m. At that point it seems Chris Roberts plans to just sell retail copies of the game (I imagine for the usual £30-40) and some vanity items i.e fancy paint jobs, go faster stripes. But there will be no subscriptions, no pay to win and no required on going payments at all. If that's so then we should be thankful that other peoples generosity is hopefully going to fund the whole game moving forward post launch. It's also quite possible that some of these ships will be fairly easy to acquire in game quickly. Yes there will be the idiots (not from within the dMw) who will bitch and moan about not getting anything special or exclusive for their hundreds of dollars. But as Chris Roberts makes painfully clear over and over
QuoteRemember: we are offering this pledge ship to help fund Star Citizen’s development. All of these ships will be available for in-game credits in the final universe, and they are not required to start the game. Additionally, all decorative ‘flare’ items will also be available to acquire in the finished game world. The goal is to make additional ships available that give players a different experience rather than a particular advantage when the persistent universe launches.
So they will only have themselves to blame for being delusional and not reading the above.
Nothing that is being bought now is going to be off limits to the rest of us. I'm planning on running some big ships, certainly a Cutlass Black, Super Hornet, Reclaimer and maybe a Constellation as well. And I don't plan on spending any 'real' money doing so. So lets be thankful that people seem keen to continue to fund SC to the advantage of us all.
Excellent post, Smilo :thumb:
Wow. That's a bit harsh. I feel that's gone the other way and called backers stupid.

That's not how I read it
No. Maybe it's not what was intended. I think the bit of fun that was had was because of the hefty price tag. I don't think sneaky was complaining. At least not how I read it. But the retort to the statement was to thank people for spending that money to support the game (which is awesome) and then suggest that you need to explain why you're not. Which equally is none of our business.
The topic was the javelin wasn't it?
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you.
We are stupid, in a nice way but we're happy stupid :)

Meh. I am and I know it. ;)
No backers are backers. And in relation to spending $2500 which is a very large amount of money it does flag up people who have a lot of disposable income, when they spend it on a digital asset in a computer game. That they choose to spend hundreds and/or thousands of dollars on a game is fine and I don't think we should be using this forum to be derogatory at their choice. Many of us won't be spending serious money on this game and many will.
I think it would be wrong if Chris Roberts allowed players to buy content that was not available to all of us. So we will have a choice as to whether we buy ships now, later or earn them in game. I used myself as an example of someone who spent some cash (still a lot more than the box price of a PC game) to get in and will earn ships in game. It's not hard to read the forum and see who is going another way and buying up lots of ships now. It's two legitimate ways of being part of Star Citizen.
I'm not picking on anyone and I accept my post does look that way, so sorry for any offence. But there have been other posts in the Start Citizen forum about 'Oh my God you spent how much, you're mad' or 'Bloody hell this is a game for rich people, it's not fair'. I'd just like to ask everyone to be happy that there are still people who have the ability and desire to invest in Star Citizen.
I was just having a laugh about it smilo ,chill m8
Yeah I get that. I misread the intent of your post, sorry. But as mentioned there have been a few 'comments' in the past. I'm sure as we go forward people will spend more money on stuff and maybe a lot more. Kudos to them and I'm just glad the Star Citizen is moving beyond a game and into the territory of being a phenomenon.
And I will admit on my Christmas list to Santa is a Cutlass Black :eyebrow:
Good choice smil. Cutlass is smashing. Anyway. We have to decide on the decor of our jav when we earn it. I was thinking gold leaf and mahogany. ;)
Aye, as I've trimmed my fleet and reallocated money from smaller ships to larger ones, I've ended up with a Cutlass Blue as my go to vehicle. I originally got one as it came with the Asteroid Hangar, but the look has grown on me and I loved the Blue specification. I even got rid of my Freelancer MIS in favour of the Cutlass Blue.
I wanted a red (still might get one) but didn't have the money at the time. I think I might wait a bit and get it as a package. Ã kinda lent towards the carrack because it has medical facilities. Fingers crossed the launch will take cargo / a passenger.
The question of how much people spend is an important one. I've put in quite a bit, but I feel my rationalisation is pretty valid. I didn't get a javelin, but have no problem with those who did.
I have a business that currently takes up all my time. I love my daughter and my wife very much, so spend any free time I do get with them (about 2 hours a day at this time of year). At the moment, I'm lucky to get an hour a week to play games - I'm sure plenty of people here can relate to that. I'm working on getting that time back, but right now I have no life. I earn more cash as a result of the effort (which I'm thankful for) but the end goal is to earn more time.
I've always been a gamer though, so I still feel connected to it. I want to see this game made. I also won't have time to enjoy it to the full, so I'm glad I can buy some cool stuff now (otherwise I'd never experience beyond an avenger, probably). I've not spent any more than I'm absolutely comfortable with.
Finally, I've already had my money's worth. I've enjoyed the community and theorising so much, I feel like I'm already playing it. Like some giant role playing game. The game could be cancelled and I wouldn't regret a thing. I'd be sad, but pleased I gave it a chance.
Chances are, the people with the money to buy all the cool toys won't have enough time to play with them much. Their advantage will last a couple of months until the rest of the world catches up. Javelins will get blown up, my Idris will fall into the hands of pirates, but I'll be grinning from ear to ear if it's even half as fun as I hope it will be.

This is exactly what I have said to many dMw members when we've been discussing the phenom' known as Star Citizen. The amount of fun I have had theorising about an unreleased game has been amazing and cumulatively has represented great value to me.
