So I'm very tempted to pick this up but have a few quick questions, which immeadiately makes a mockery of my thread subject.
I've always liked the idea of Eve but got scared and put off by the sheer intensity of the start up. Now with Elite I'm happy to take that on for the nostalgia and the sheer scale, but are there plans afoot to make it a more mulitplayer friendly environment, so there's some opportunity to bump into you ladies around a 'live' universe.
Secondly I'm assuming there's no way to buy your way up (good thing) but thought I'd check.
Hi fella,
Well, I never played Eve but I can say Elite is pretty easy to pick up but will require a bit of control familiarization effort. It's playable with any sort of joystick, cheap or expensive but the joystick is the important part, xbox controllers are far harder to control due to the stick size.
There promises to be wing style grouping introduced in the New Year where we can join in on missions together and share the spoils. The base game is in good shape, we're all just waiting for content and social interaction features.
We are currently all part of a private group and if the fancy takes you and other, it's pretty easy to meet up in game, less so to actually complete a common goal although it's pretty easy for you and a wingman to go off fighting in a conflict zone and watch eachothers backs.
It's a visually stunning game that holds true to the original but needs more content to be more complete.
There may be a way in future to buy credits with real money but not earn the right to get certain ships just because you have the money. Its not difficult to get money in game so I don't see that as being popular.
It's taking me some time to get to grips with the trading malarky and working out what to take where. I thought if it was high supply then the price would be good, but then I couldn't find anywhere to sell the stuff!
Then I found some rare items purely by chance, appear in yellow in the commodities list, and took them as far away as I could be bothered and made a bit of money. Next I'm going to fly back while scanning and mapping and seeing what other things I can find en-route.
It is a bit of a lonely game.
Thanks fellas, I think I'll hold fire for a bit. The reference in one of the reviews as to 'Euro Truck Simulator in space' hasn't exactly enamored me. I want Frontier and Eve crossed up.
Well the quickest way to earn credits is trading for sure. It's a grind to get to the bigger ships but many people sick with ships that are more modest. It takes about a day to learn the game and trade up to a Cobra. Then you have missions and faction rep to play for, permits for systems to earn, mining, civil wars to participate in, smuggling, bounty hunting and piracy. It has enough to see any new player to the next update with more content which will have you probably January to get your ship and plays skills up to speed.
I wouldn't call it the ETS of space. It could be if that's what you like but all that above doesn't happen on the roads of Europe unless you're in Manchester.
now if it had been Euro Truck Simulator 2 in space that would have been a different story !
Can be mate.
Just got the East expansion pack. Have to say the only difference is the sun rising there. In Elite, you can't tell East from West as there are 400 billion Suns, traffic is just as bad though and you get to transport slaves not gas pipes!
Trading is quickest, but not the only way. I spent three days in the Empire in a Cobra trying to get the Naval Progression missions to achieve the rank of "Baron" in the Empire. As a side-effect I made 1.2M CR doing the missions.

Well at the moment it is "Frontier", except no planetary landings yet, but so pretty.
As this probably cost me the same as Frontier, when I originally bought it on release so long ago, I'm happy enough. So the aim is to get some reasonable progress before they bring in the extras and DLCs.
Lets just hope they get the teamplay missions up and running soon and we can go a do some teamy things.
