After last night's chat I decided to bite the bullet and switch from my FSX Gold to the FSE installation. Currently taking a copy of the FSX folder (all 55GB of it) and will then be uninstalling FSX and doing a fresh install of FSE.
Wish me luck.
I can say the most important part of this is finding a webpage detailing how to completely remove FSX Gold and Orbx. Clean out the registry and uninstall both. Then all you are actually doing is reinstalling into a Steam Folder. Only one add-on I have tried to install onto my C drive and I changed this manually. I've had absolutely no crashes since upgrading when I used to crash nightly with FSX Gold. I also get double the frame rate that I used to on the graphics side of things.
to be honest i couldnt do without the q400 or pmdg 737 so i installed fsx se on a fresh install of windows 8, put all my addons on and then checked it work. I then disconnected the hard drive it was on and installed fsx orginal onto my ssd with all the addons and q400 and 737. Then reconnected the hard drive. Both work flawlessy. Although one version has 2 of the the finest aircraft in FSX...I wishh they'd hurry up witht the patches
Uninstalls of everything done (addons first, then FSX), folders deleted manually and registry entries removed. Phew....
Downloaded and installed FSE, now trying to push some addons back into it, starting with Orbx Global.............
@Sulky: I thought the Q400 has been patched to allow FSE access? See the note at the bottom of the page:

Hmm, ok, dumb question. Having installed FSE in it's normal D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX root, all the addons want to go to the old 'Micrsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X' folder, which no longer exists. Do I let it install there or do I need ot find a way to get it into the steam folder/
That's a bit odd, when I installed my add ons on SE it automatically found my steam FSX directory so I just kept clicking next.
I would change it to the steam one personally
I've tried the Dash 8 Q400 and Orbx Global, both of them are hard-coded to the old FSX directory and I get no option to change directory. How did others install Orbx elsewhere?
mine auto found steam on a new win 8 install , but i would check that you have entries in your registry for legacy FSX, use a reg cleaner maybe to break/delete the old links?
I have already done the regclean, 4 times now and nothing is left on the system that is FSX related.
Rebooted, re-regcleaned and trying again.....
PMDG 777-200 installed.
Orbx Global (version 130) keeps going back to and creating an old FSX folder. Grrr.

I spoke too soon.
QuoteCould not find a valid dll.xml location for FSX. Please contact support@precisionmanuals.com,
:frusty:
Verifying Steam files is next step....
as you just bought it I thought the dll was fixed
I would raise a ticket if not, check it didnt put anything in your old location for fsx
QuoteFSX-SE Compatibility for PMDG 777-200LR/F and PMDG 777-300ER:Tonight we have released updates to both of the of our FSX based 777 products in order to make them compatible with both FSX and FSX:Steam Edition.
Given that nobody ever predicted we would have two versions of FSX at the same time- this process required a rather significant overhaul of our installation process, and the PMDG Operations Center in order to make it capable of gracefully handling either FSX, FSX:SE- or... as some would no doubt want: Both platforms at the same time.
In the process of building this update, we have updated the 777s to version 1.10.6320, which we are calling SP1d... I want to be absolutely clear that SP1d and SP1c are functionally identical, except for some structural changes that will not impact your use of the software. (We moved TCAS to make it internal, we changed some internal handling in order to make the 777 functional with FSX:SE- and a bit of other cleanup...)
If you are only running FSX- then this update isn't necessary for you.
If you wish to use the 777s in FSX:SE, then you will need this update.
Now here is where there is a change you should pay attention to! In the past we have created update installers that were around 130MB or so- and you simply downloaded these in order to update your installation. This time, because of the changes we had to make to our installation process in order to account for FSX:SE- you will need to download the entire installer, fresh from our system... There is no "patch" installer for either the PMDG 777-200LR/F or the PMDG 777-300ER.
If any add-ons try to install in the old folder then there is a reg gook somewhere still referring to the old install or the actual add-on has itself got an unitistall.exe registered in control panel.
Yep, trying a diff regcleaner as we speak.
Hmm, I created a dll.xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0">
<Descr>Launch</Descr>
<Filename>dll.xml</Filename>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad>
</SimBase.Document>
...and the installation completed. Now to see if it works.
Try this for orbx, see if it will run the uninstaller and try again

Thanks, will give that a go.
PMDG 777 is installed, nothing else yet.
