Hi folks,
I'm thinking about picking up ED on the long wait for SC release, which I am starting to guess that along with optimitsation might be a good two or three years away.
What is ED's current state? How long have people been playing? Would I be at a disadvantage now not jumping on this ship at an early stage? Would it be a bit like getting a simple starter ship on SC after release, after everybody has bought 15 ships and practised them for years in Wing Commander? If I was a die hard space sim I would just buy it but I'm a little unsure.
As I work quite alot, does it suit a drop in drop out kind of gameplay? Or are the benefits of playing long term grinding rewards?
Advice would be appreciated. Mucho gracias
hiya froge find me in game and i'll send u an group invite, we will be starting wing nights soon for team play, whats your ED ingame name?
me albert or arithon can be found most nights in the ED ts channel if you have any questions or need any help.
Thanks dude, I haven't actually bought it yet, I'm still on the fence. I just dropped £50 on SC, a bit hesitant to drop another bunch of money on another space sim when I'm not even sure if it's my cup of tea yet... but definitely considering it. If I do I will join you in TS =D
As its not a 100% multiplayer focused game, you won't feel left behind. If you want to travel any great distance you might need a few hours set aside, but you can still achieve something for just a couple of hours gameplay. Its not a massive ship grind. Yeah there are some big expensive ships in the game, but you don't need them. Just buying a cheap ship that suits your purpose (ie, combat or trade) and fitting it out over time with better components will make a decent difference to your game.

Glad to hear it, leaning towards buying it now... =)

Hi Froge,
Elite is a pretty mature base product, is at the point where the multiplayer part of the game is being delivered and they are adding new major features through patches. The game is rock solid in its stability but in contrast to Wing Commander type games, your progress has no relation to other players, so you can start whenever you like and won't be behind anyone but your own desire to take on the type of play that suits you. You could actually play solo and never see another human, or play in our private group and only with our dMw folks, or in open play and encounter lots of human players. The cool thing is the galaxy is all the same on all modes so your progress carrys over to any mode and you can drop out or in to either easily.
The Galaxy is huge and the simulation part of the game is very good indeed. There are no story based linear missions to do but there are goals that are picked up from bulletin boards or from the news channel in game where they report on goings on and basically you drop by that system in the news article and see whats up.
You can trade, bounty hunt, pirate, mine, escort and get a payout for helping protect your wing mates whilst they trade. Wings of 4 players can share rewards now which is good fun and can help new players earn credits faster. You can support factions and gain rep, rank up in the millitary of the 2 main millitary factions.
The game looks and feels amazing. It's far enough from Star Citizen not to be a stop gap but close enough to be a good choice for new Sim players or those new to space games. The Galaxy is a close representation of our own milky way.
As sneaky says drop by TS and we can answer any other question you have.

That's a really good answer, and I like the idea that you can play from one extreme to the other - totally solo to multiplayer. Really appreciate your guys' answers, exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I'm going to have to clear my weekend plans haha. For this and Arma... :boxing:
Froge,
If you come on TS when Albert or myself are on-line, we'll come and find you at your start location, drop some cargo on you to boost your initial funds. This'll get you a few upgrades. From there you'll be able to follow us back to "dMw space" and get trading or bounty-hunting as you see fit.
I too am on the fence and have been looking at this game, it does look great and has a bunch of mixed reviews, but the overall "feel" is that its a pretty solid game.
Having played toasters vs humans, i got the space itch again, and its not gone away, SC seemed a bit too in depth for me, and price wise, it was a bit steep..
hmm that said ED is now down to £40 for the digital download, and a half decent stick is also £40, i don't know if we`d get a reduced price through the shop for it tho?
I was looking at getting http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_t (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_t)
Decent reviews, and not bank breakingly expensive like the £200+ flight HOTAS
So whats is the community view on the game?
Hey Amber, nice to hear from you. We had some good time in BSGO. Star Citizen will be as in depth or simple as you make it I believe as well but being the GL for Elite I'd say Elite is definitely pretty easy to get into and there are many dMw commanders who can give you the run through.
I'll leave some others to give their opinion as I've put my 2p in above and more opinion will give you a more balanced view.
I've just bought the game.
So if anyone else is on the fence about it, come and be a noob with me!
Awesome. Let me know your commander name and I'll add you to the group.

I bought one for my son as a Xmas present and was impressed enough to get one for myself (we both play Elite). Good value HOTAS.
I would like a longer connecting cable when the unit is split, but that does not distract from its worth.
Hi Amberleigh,
I started on Elite back in August during the BETA playing with my old 1999 Descent Freespace serial-to-USB Logitech Wingman joystick. You can buy the current equivalent six button joystick with hat for around £15.
After I did the EGX show in September I majorly lusted after an X52 and got one for my birthday in October (using a discount with CPC). My youngest son plays Elite on my old Wingman and my eldest has just started playing using a XBOX 360 controller.
Mouse and keyboard is okay, but any kind of stick or controller really makes the game.
Have a look on the videos/screen shots thread on this forum to see in-game footage from myself and others in dMw. This will give you an accurate impression of the game and an idea what it's about. I've also started a blog site www.elite-dangerous-blog.co.uk (http://www.elite-dangerous-blog.co.uk) where I am posting bits and bobs about the game as well as promoting deadmen.
If you are coming to the LAN next month, I will be there and I'm bringing my Oculus Rift DK2 and X52 setup to give a anyone who wants, a try. If you are still on the fence then, that'll push you right off on the Elite side!!
Also, have a peek at this video...

Awesome!
hiya amber long time m8 i'll be on TS msg me in game and we will get you sorted, usally u will see me, albert or arithon on the ED TS channel.
I jumped into TeamSpeak tonight as I played my first few minutes of the game (after the tutorials) hoping to say hi to the Elite fans and to ask if they would be on tomorrow to play once I've got to grips with the game.
What I got was a really warm welcome from the guys and a whole bunch of really good tips and just general guidance as I had no idea what the hell I was doing at that point (I turbo'd into a station and died....... twice).
Arithon then goes completely out of his way to come and meet me, teaches me a whole bunch of stuff including how to use the cargo scoop and then spends the next two hours sending me cargo to sell and reccomends a ship to buy, with upgrades, that I could then afford.
He says it's no bother as he is mega rich but he took a good chunk of his evening to show me how to play. What an awesome dude.
See you all in game!

It's was actually far from obvious to me that the unit splits at all from only looking at the Amazon images. I spent ages thinking it was a bit of a joke.
It gets excellent reviews though. I was wondering how long the connector actually is?
one of the reviews on amazon said the connector cable is about 2` long, or the length of the keyboard(ish)
Which would seem about right, as i`ve watched a few vids on you tube about various HOTAs, and this one gets a good thumbs up as a starter kit.
OFC if your REALLY into flight sims, and have a decent budget, then £300++ will get you a nerdtastic amount of kit, and accessories, still i`m not THAT serious a gamer...yet, give it a few years to develop..
OK I have the game installed, and played a few tutorials, only nearly died once..as i`m flying with a mouse (not good handling)
Anyhow i`ll be on tomorrow
Pilot name - Ranualf
Let the void tremble at my name, or fall about in a fit of giggles... yea:roflmao:
I'll be on this evening and will add new pilots to our group. Welcome aboard!
I will be on this evening, but my sons birthday takes precedence tonight.
I'll be on later (he has to be in bed for school tomorrow - birthday or not!).
See you in the void commanders!
Hi all
Done all the training missions, by far the hardest was the final one to dock with the rotating cube dock.. fun.... i only crashed twice- great improvement, lord know how many laws i broke trying to dock!
So after a few fails, i went and watched a youtube vid, oh man, the radar thing, with the arrows on, pointing to the dock- lifesaver!
so i`m gonna jump into the void now and see how many times i get wiped out!
To infinity, and beyond...until its time to dock ....
At least you both seem to be enjoying it. Not sure if I'll be on Elite tonight as my lad and might end up on ESO now its sub free.
My Elite name is Sconn Wildhammer, feel free to add me peeps
Well i bought elite and played it a little but i get so little gaming time that i mostly just seem to play counterstrike most nights. Is there an evening in the week that people mostly play Elite?
We are organising an official evening as we speak, should have some concrete details soon!
Can take a bit to get used to Elite, but a great game when you have learnt the ropes.
were on most nights gunda, were looking at having a team wing night set up soon.
While out doing some research on ships - types, cost, cargo etc, i found this very interesting article
http://lavewiki.com/ships (http://lavewiki.com/ships)
Not 100% sure how accurate it is, but its got a lot of basic info, in a easy to read format.
So for me, just starting out it makes for a great "look and catch up" page
See you in the void, and yes i`m having a great time.. just deciding what ship to grab next- more cargo = many $$$
And damn you albert with you 240 tons of cargo, like :woot2:
We can join a wing tonight mate and see about upping that cargo limit a bit for you. I'd say 100T Type 6 would be a good target if trading is your thing. It would allow you to come to Light and get the 5 mill CR reward if you spend the time getting them weapons and get into the top 70%.
Offer open to froge and anyone else who is interested.

Hi folks! Good to say hello to you guys last night, I didn't join in the fun as I was just trying to get used to the basics of the game so I wouldn't be a major pain in the ass.
Nevertheless I like the sound of earning 5 million CR. What is this event thing? Got a link with details? I'll most probably be on tonight for some fun, unless some work comes up which I'm hoping it doesn't. =)
There's no real event that's handy to link to (though someone might have put it on the forums). Basically, there are periodic 'community goals' in the game, which are triggered when large fights off kick off between major factions and the like. The current community goals we're talking about are in a system called Lugh, where the Crimson State are fighting for independence and the Federation are trying to crush that. If you wanted to join in you'd need to be able to get to Lugh. Then there are 2 community goals you can pick up at a specific station in the system - 1 for trading, 1 for combat.
In each case there is a global tally of how much everyone has done towards the goal, and different 'tiers' that can be attained. Trading is measured in tons of cargo (they request cargo of a specific category, but it's up to you to find a source of it with reasonable profit). Combat is measured in combat bonds, which is vouchers given to you by a side for killing ships of the opposing side in a combat zone. Bigger harder ships net you a larger bond, and your death wipes out any bonds you haven't yet cashed in (you can cash them in for cold hard credits at any station the faction exists at, but they only count towards the goal if you cash them in at the station you picked up the goal from).
So everyone's working towards a shared tier, and trying to get it as high as possible. The higher the tier that is reached before the community goal ends, the larger end reward *everyone* gets. But on top of that your reward level is determined by how much you helped compared to everyone else. So, last time I checked, the combat goal was at tier 7 (with it requiring exponentially more effort to get to the next tier up each time). At tier 7, if you helped out *at all*, so you are in the 'top 100%' of people who contributed, you get 70k. If you are in the top 70% of people, 5 mil (big jump there). Top 40% is 10 mil, top 15% (or was it 20?) is 12.5 mil, top 5% is 17.5 mil. I got into the top 70% at around 300k of combat bonds, though of course as time goes on that number will go higher as more people contribute further. I'm currently at around 800k of bonds and haven't yet hit top 40%. The total value contributed by everyone was about 2.5 US billion (i.e. 1000 million) so far. So it looks like for your average person top 70% or top 40% is the place to aim for for best time/reward tradeoff. When you are killing ships any ship you register a hit on that is then destroyed by your wing you should get a bond for, which is split evenly between the wing members, not divided by damage done or similar. So pilots in smaller ships can go in with more experienced fliers in bigger better ships and rack up the kills and credits quite quickly. Just try not to die.
Compare this with the trading goal, which only opened up yesterday (the combat one's been going for a while now). When I looked it hadn't even reached tier 1, so it didn't matter where you were in the rankings, you got nothing (except the actual profit you sold the goods for of course). 9000-odd tons of goods had been delivered, of which about 300 tons was me (I spent a lot of my hard earned credits buying and outfitting a type 6 just for the purpose, then proceeded to ram it into the toast rack and blow it up with a full 100 ton cargo hold worth about 300'000 on my first trip...). That was enough to get me into the top 40%, but of course I would still get nothing because the goal was well off tier 1. It's also worth noting that it can be worth forming a wing even for trading in private groups. Supposedly when you are in a wing and trading whoever sells the goods gets a full 100% of the profit they would normally, but all their wingmates who are in the same [system|instance] (not sure which) receive 5% of the value of the profit* as bonds which they once again have to cash in. So 4 type 6s or an Annie and 2 types 6s and a Cobra or whatever can increase their profit quite reasonably by forming a wing to buy and sell.
*This doesn't really make sense 'in Universe'. Why would someone pay more for the same amount of goods just because there's more of you (100% to the trader as normal but also an additional 5% to each wing member)? But it encourages people to wing up to trade (for security, with a fighter escort for the larger less well armed cargo ships for example), while not penalising the actual trader by taking some of their profit away to give to the wing (which would encourage people to get a wing escort then drop wing just before selling the goods, or similar).

Here's Frontier's trailer for the 1.1 update when community goals were added. It does a passable job of showing what's involved.

Wont be on tonight (raid night for WoW), yes some of us still play that ancient game
Elite wise
However i`m upto 40k creds now- doing short haul runs in my sidewinder, i ditched the scanner, and got +2 cargo, so it makes a huge difference.
Running between the Eravate ports- quick easy money, but the return trip inst too profitable, only making about 2k on 6 tons, but the outbound is nearly 4k for 6 tons, which is ok, for my size of noob ship.
Albert, a type 6 would be great, i get the trading thing, and like you said last night, money makes more money- if you know who wants what (Thrudd is a money maker)
Probs catch you in the void from 10pm for a bit, as our raid finish early (several of the guild have a +2 hour time difference- living in SA)
The more I learn about the game mechanics, the more I fall in love with ED. Something tells me I'll be playing this for a long time to come. Thanks for the detailed explanation and video. Judging by the size of the universe, are these community goals happening all over? Do they happen organically or are they created by the designers?

Don't happen to remember the name of the basic logitech joystick for around £15?
there`s the thrust master joystick, thats just under £15
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ThrustMaster-2960623-Thrustmaster-USB-Joystick/dp/B0002EAA36/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1426685830&sr=8-14&keywords=logitech+joystick (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ThrustMaster-2960623-Thrustmaster-USB-Joystick/dp/B0002EAA36/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1426685830&sr=8-14&keywords=logitech+joystick)
But if you think your going to spend a fair amount of time on this game, HOTAS is the way forward, unless your on a budget.
I'm a bit of a 8-10 gamer Amber, as cet nicks an hour with the UK gamers from me these days. But we can do a trade or war community goal evening tomorrow in Lugh and I'll come get you and we can trade up.
I'm not really on a budget, but I've spent over £500 this month on parts and games and should probably chill out when I'm supposed to be saving for a ridiculous cycling adventure around the world I talked myself into for some reason.
Having said that, that one has no additional buttons by the looks of it and I was hoping to bind power changes to that as the arrow keys are a bit awkward to hit mid flight and I'm guessing voice attack won't be ideal for really fast changes mid fight. I don't think I want full HOTAS as I am happy with my left hand on a keyboard - if anything it seems to give me more options unless I',m dropping megabucks on a proper system - but maybe a healthy half way is the way to go here...
Thoughts?
I play Elite with an Xbox 360 pad I have had for years for driving games etc, and it works pretty well. Still use the keyboard for minor things, but most functions are available on the pad.
I got my HOTAS today
Had a few hours getting used to it, and, its very intuitive and it was £35 from amazon
and to be honest, i`m loving it, makes docking great, until i get a bigger ship with a dock computer (maybe)
but if you have dropped £500 on you rig, i`d go for the HOTAS, over spending cash on a joystick
Side note it was really easy to set up, i have a link for the set up buttons, as the standard one wasnt 100% perfect for me.
all i can say, is that for the extra £20, i`d lump for the HOTAS
see you in the void

I think I heard you mention this on teamspeak tonight but I was lagging really hard so couldn't hear very well. Ehat's the name of the model you got? I might have to jump on the HOTAS train. Especially now I've got my phone-in-a-hat headtracking working (not very smooth but hilarious enough to stick with it).
Had good fun tonight, thanks everyone for helping me out - and albert for picking me up, giving me some freebies, and teaching me some more.
Three evenings in now and just about getting my bearings. Glad to have contributed to the community event. Now to get to top 70%...

Having a blast with it, as i said last night, most of the keybinds are on it (inc landing gear, boost, shift jump, etc), and yes it has twist yaw too- WIN
Also makes landing a doddle now /cheer
go on, you know you want to!
I managed to scrape and plunder enough creds to buy my Mk3 Cobra today (Huge thanks to Albert):rockon::rockon:
Now to do more trading, and buy bigger cargo space, had enough to give myself +2 tons so now have 20... double that, and in pew pew lasers and we`ll have a huge bill...
mucho trading to be done!
Loving this game looks great, plays very well on ultra setting
see you in the void

You can buy mine if you like. It arrived about 7 hours ago, since then I've lost about 120,000 credits and earnt about 8000. I just didnt get on with it at all, which is surprising as the whole bloody internet is raving about this thrustmaster x.
stick with it, i love my HOTAs, feels very intuitive and once you have your keys mapped out to your liking, makes for very easy flight, docking and dogfighting
But if you cant get on with it, we know someone who wants one :P
Oh i also upgraded to my type 6 late last night - 104 tons of money making goodness! (after some spending)
love it
