Title: Greetings, fellow brief mortals
Post by: Khalen on April 20, 2015, 10:06:58 AM
Hi all

I'm your latest stray which Arithon picked up off of the Elite Dangerous forums ;)

A little bit about Khalen:
Khalen (some say Kay-len, others say Kal-en... I really don't mind) is a name I have been using for several years, since I underwent a bit of a 'rebirth' in WOW, switching from Alliance to Horde at the last stages of the Burning Crusade. I created and ran a semi-hardcore raiding guild on Argent Dawn for a while before quitting about 2-3 years ago. I was nicknamed Jack Bauer by the raid team... I hoped it was affectionate but I suspect it was due to my hardass raid leading and drive to success even if it destroys me... which it eventually did ;)
My real name is Pete, I live in Buckinghamshire, I'm 35 years old and getting married this August to my wonderful Swedish fiancee who incidentally I met in WOW about 7 years ago. I work in the Architecture industry, specializing in CAD and 3D design of education institutions and retail/banking.
I'm a bit of an otaku I'm afraid... can't shake off the anime addiction. I also love to read and think Brandon Sanderson is probably the best fantasy author alive right now.

My 'Elite' Experience
I've been playing E-D for about a week now and have amassed a 'mighty' Viper (http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60M,7u57u54ws4ws0__,2-505A503w4s5K3c,03w7Q44yG2Uc) and about 1.1 million credits, mostly from bounties and conflict zones. It should be noted that this is in fact my first ever flight sim type of game... the main reason being I am a lefty, and its extremely hard to find peripherals to suit my cack-handed ways. As such I stared enviously at Elite since the kickstarter days, having remembered playing the original on my dad's 286 many moons ago. Then I found this Thrustmaster T16000M joystick which can be converted out of the box for lefties and I made the plunge.
My main goal at the moment is to get a Vulture... it looks like a flying brick and I want to ram it through some enemy cockpits. As a general rule, I prefer PvE co-operative play... I'm not a big PvPer although I have been known to dabble.

Other games on the go atm:
Diablo 3 (late starter on this, just got a Crusader up to around Torment II level)
Heroes of the Storm (this is me 'dabbling' in a little PvP)
GTA 5 - Am about 40-50% into the story mode right now
Far Cry 4
Pillars of Eternity
Dragon Age: Inquistion

I was also pretty addicted to co-op Borderlands 2... not so much the pre-sequel though.

My rig, in case it is important:
I recently rebuilt it after my last mobo melted...
Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Hero
CPU: i7 4790K
RAM: 32GB
GPU: Gigabyte G1 GTX-980

Hoping to upgrade from 60hz 1080p to 144hz 1440p soon, but wedding plans are setting me back dagnabit!

SteamID: Khalen
Battle.net ID: ArdentLoony

Anyway, enough ranting from me, I look forward to flying with you guys in Elite, and who knows, maybe team up in some other games. Please feel free to send friend requests to my Steam and/or battle.net IDs.

Khal / Pete

I had the same dilemma! For reference, I was married about 8 years ago and during that time I've sprouted 2 kids and managed 1 full PC upgrade (where I used to buy a part at least once a month before ;))
But please don't let that scare you off ....
