Title: Magically uninstalled itself????
Post by: Milli on May 01, 2015, 01:05:55 PM
Hi guys,

Came back to play today - installed yesterday and played couple hours - and GTAV has to be re-installed... just isnt there anymore -  I know no one uses my PC so can rule out family being the cause, but its nowhere to be found.

Re-installing as we speak which is a pain.

Any ideas why this could happen?

Sounds very strange! Did you buy through steam or someone else?

Huh, there was an update yesterday, but my game was still there. Has the GTA V folder gone too?

Just found this on Reddit, which everyone is claiming to be a fix. No explanation as to why it happened it the first place though.

Try this: Make a copy of the 'depotcache' folder where the preload was downloaded the first time. Place it somewhere safe. Then, go and delete the depotcache folder that you made a copy of. Then, reopen Steam and start the preload again. It will ask you where to save the preload, and it will create a 'depotcache' folder to wherever you specify. After you choose where to save it, start the preload and let it download a few megabytes. Then, pause the preload andEXIT steam. Go to where Steam was downloading the game, and replace the 'depotcache' folder with the one that you made a copy of, which has all of the preload files in it. Then, restart steam and start the preload again. If all goes well, it should instantly say that the preload has finished. This should work, but please, try at your own risk. I couldn't download the game and today I had a friend copy his preload onto my HDD and I started the preload, exited steam, inserted the preload files that he gave me, restarted steam, resumed the download, and it worked flawlessly. But once again, try at your own risk, I don't want you to have to download the game again :/
Edit: Clarification.

That sounds like it's specifically for the preload from before the game was released, when the files could be on your PC but were encrypted. Not for just downloading the game now it's already out.

Yeah was thinking that was for pre release as well.  Everything was deleted apart from a few files in the game directory - strange one
