This is pretty big news for anyone who was planning to run multi-crew ships solo (with NPC crew or even via multiple accounts) at launch of the PU.

Quote from: RSI DevHiring a crew, or npc's is something we talk about a lot. While the capital ships were definitely created with multiplayer gameplay in mind, we recognize the desire to have one even if you don't choose to play with other people a lot. While crew members aren't planned for initial release, it's definitely something we talk about quite a bit when we envision the general gameplay options. This is fairly advanced AI compared to the general npc's though and will likely be tackled after we get the core gameplay elements up and running.
I
totally get these reasons, the Crew AI will indeed be a step up from normal NPC AI. I'm also glad I'm in DMW because we know we'll be able to crew our ships together!
:thumbsup::dmw:
I'm excited more by the state crew will be at the initial release.
It's great we will be learning actual roles rather than just grinding skills.
I frequent the forums far more than I probably should, and this hasn't come across my radar, and there's no one screaming about it just yet.
Either the Dev is wrong (CR has said in a number of occasions of the info hasn't come from him then it isn't official) or this comment simply hasn't been picked up on by the community just yet. If the latter, then it's going to be a fun few weeks on the forums watching all of the "I wanna fly my cap ship solo" peeps crying about being at a disadvantage if they don't have any NPC crew!
i think I'm going to head over there and stir something up
They did say that they'll have stations independant from the crew that runs them though. On smaller ships at least.

+1 to that.. Go dMw!
Well it looks like I made the same mistake as a bunch of other people when reading the dev comment, which was the double assumption of "at launch" and meaning when the game goes live, when he really said "on initial release" and was referring to the initial release of the PU, I.e. the alpha.
basically, he was saying that CIG will be getting the stations and seat actions up and running for players first, and then, when they are deemed to be "done" they will then commence of putting in the AI necessary for NPCs to fulfil those roles.
so we'll have plenty of opportunity to explore the multiplayer aspect of many of the ships.
Can't wait for the first time we are in TL's ship, all sat at consoles and someone says "I wonder what this big red button does".
Boooom!
There's a reason he gets them all with LTI.

...and I'll be watching the carnage from the safety of a stealthed Herald and waiting for the cheque!
A slight aside, but an interesting aspect of the hull insurance is that if you destroy and insured hull you won't necessarily get your ship back immediately. Just like in real life, if you tank your car you end up having to wait a period of weeks before a replacement is available. Star Citizen is intending the same type of thing. So, a destroyed ship, particularly the bigger ones, might take some time or even weeks to be replaced by the insurance.
I love that mechanic! I was over the moon when they said that. I just hope they keep to it and we don't find a nice shiny new ship waiting each and every time we lose one.
I think they chose to release the NPC thing in silly season where there is hype about the leaked artwork and models. Maybe hoping the NPC feature exclusion will be glossed over or not noticed. Obsydian should shir the pot up I feel :woot2:
