Planned Server Upgrade
We advised you in this thread (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=4229) that there was some planned server maintenance that is likely to occur on either Saturday 24th or 31st January.  We would now like to outline some of the work that we will be carrying out.

Switch from Linux to Windows
As some of you may know, the Linux code written by Valve for Steam is at best ghastly and at worst crashes the server - in short it sucks like a big sucky thing from the hoover factory.  Linux boxes that comfortably ran 4-6 CS servers under 1.5 are now struggling to run a single 16 person server on the same box under the Steam code.  This is a Steam-wide issue and there has been no response or comment from Valve since Steam came out.  It is highly likely that the lousy Valve binaries for Linux account for some if not most of the ping issues that we have been experiencing during gameplay.  Windows servers do not appear to be having these problems.  In addition we have an expensive 3com server nic which we are currently unable to get to work alongside the onboard nic due to some 2.4 kernel issues.

The community's Debian (2.4 kernel) Linux box has a Pentium IV 2.0GHz with 1.0GB PC2100 RAM and currently runs 3 x 16 person servers and the forums.  In order to help the lag issues and solve the dual nic problem we intend to install Windows 2003 Server and sadly, say goodbye to Linux for the timebeing.

Hardware Specification Upgrade
We rarely visit the server farm so it makes good sense to carry out any upgrades to hardware whilst we undertake the change from Linux to Windows.  Our current motherboard will support up to PC2700 RAM and a PIV 2.8GHz (533Mhz)processor.  The Admins have debated at some length what if anything to upgrade during this maintenance visit.  We have concluded that it is not worth upgrading the motherboard to move to 64-bit CPUs just yet as the 64 bit binaries are not yet available and the technology is still overpriced.  However as a cost-effective interim upgrade we have decided to install a new CPU and some new RAM as follows:

CPU Upgrade: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz (533FSB) - £156.28
RAM Upgrade: TwinMOS 1GB (2x512MB) DDR PC3200 Dual Channel Kit - £110.16
plus a small amount for postage.

We could save £2 by buying PC2700, but buying PC3200 will mean we can (hopefully) use it again on a future hardware upgrade. In the mean time the memory will quite happily auto-underclock to PC2700 speeds when we fit it.

The effect of the change to Windows and the upgraded hardware should, we are hoping, make a significant difference to the quality of the gameplay the community enjoys.

Important
We are hoping to raise the funds for the upgrade via community donations.  If you wish to donate money please visit the Dead Men Walking home page (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/) and click on the Donate button located at the lower right corner.  Alternatively, click here (https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=paulh%40pobox.com&item_name=dMw+Community+Fund&no_note=1&tax=0%C3%82%C2%A4cy_code=GBP&lc=GB) to donate NOW.

All donations are gratefully accepted.  The funds will be audited and controlled by TeaLeaf, Oldbloke and Stryker.  Any surplus will be declared to the community and retained for community use.  Any surplus hardware will be offered to the community for sale or re-use.

Thank you.

The Admins.

Note:  The donation service is provided via Paypal who deduct a 3.4% plus 20p fee from each donation.  Alternatively you may make an electronic funds transfer from your bank (send a PM to TeaLeaf for details).  As a last resort then you can send a cheque c/o TeaLeaf (PM TL for info).

Any size of donation is welcome! :worship:   Keep it coming! :)

The total raised should buy us the hardware :D  Well done peeps :worship:  Yet again, the benefits of the dMw community are clearly demonstrated.  w2g

If you still feel generous then please do continue to donate.  We will eventually move to a 64 bit platform so as to maintain the quality of the game play that members here enjoy and that will, I am sure, cost no small sum.  Any and all surplus donations will be clearly ring-fenced and TeaLeaf, Stryker and Olbloke will have full details so that a clear audit trail can be followed.

On behalf of the Admins may I thank you for your generosity.

We are now starting to build up a good sized fund for the next server upgrade, so I will look into opening an account for the community.  That will mean better accountability for the funds as they will be in an official dMw account.

As I have said many time before in this thread - w2g peeps!  BTW, Paypal is excellent for small donations, so if you only want to chuck in a couple of quid, then please do :D

You can, if your Dutch bank will allow you to transfer money to a UK-based Sterling account, but it is likely to cost a fair bit more to you than letting Paypal do it and it will be a damn sight more difficult.  If you want to send it to me by bank transfer then PM me and I'll give you the details, otherwise just click on the Paypal link.

Donations are still being accepted, so you haven't missed the boat.  However as we have already achieved out original budgetary needs, the money given now is to be saved for anticipated future upgrades.  This could include a move to 64-bit computing or transferring BlackAdder from a 2U case to a 1U case for example.  Click on the Paypal button and donate away :D

Bump.  Cheque for £40.  Postal Order £15.

If I do not receive them I will write them off at the end of this month and close the book-keeping records.

For Your Information:

Following the last server upgrade dMw had retained funds of £149.42.
After this weekend's successful LAN we have an additional retained surplus of £250.  So the dMw Community Account now has a balance of £399.42.

The funds are currently held my me (still) and I apologise for not getting around to organising a dedicated dMw account as I had previously promised.  I'll try to get it sorted asap.

Postal Order £15 - this is now being written off as the pledge has never been received.
Cheque £40 - received with thanks.

For Your Information:

The dMw Community Account now has a balance of £439.42.

The funds are currently held my me.  An account is being opened in the joint names of Oldbloke and me.  This avoids the need for massively over-complicated account requirements placed upon 'official' clubs.  As soon as it is up and running we will post details.

I think you mean tax-free, not cash free   Trouble is it then wrecks your Maxi-ISA allowance for shares. so I'll not be doing that.  The account for kids requires revenue forms and also potential tax liabilities depending upon who 'gve' the money.  Hence going for a basic joint current account is better than trying to achieve 'official' status.

For the Community's Information:

I now have the papers for a savings account to be opened to hold the above Community funds.   The Community is not a proper legal entity and does not have sufficient by way of formal proceedings or constitutions to allow us to open up an account in the name of the community.  The account therefore needs to be in the name of individuals.

The individuals nominated to hold the account for the benefit of the dMw Community are Oldbloke and me.    The account will be opened in our joint names and we will be 'trustees' for the community's money.  If any person objects then please either post here or send an email to the Admins.

The account opened will be a Platinum Savings Account with Lloyds TSB.  Account numbers and sort code etc will be posted here as soon as they are available.  We are aware that this account is not 'the best' in terms of interest received, however it is the simplest to deal with administratively as I already bank with them.  In any case, the amounts of annual interest likely to be involved are small and the difference between a good and bad account across a whole year is unlikely to exceed £10.  We feel this is a price worth paying for the administrative simplicity.

I hope the Community views these arrangements as satisfactory.

Such contributions are not deductible in the UK for UK residents and I doubt that they are deductible in other countries.  Unless you have carrnal knowledge of your local tax inspector then I doubt that even the redoubtable Mr Pendragon will be able to wangle it.

Community Fund: £1,824.58
New Server cost:  Â£2,667.26

The dMw Community Account now has a balance of -£842.68

I have paid the difference between the cost of the server and the actual Communtiy funds held from my own personal account in the hope that the Community will be able to repay me from profit made by LAN VIII and the fund raising currently underway.

I have finished reconciling the donations received by post or direct transfer.  Everyone who contributed should have received a PM from me confirming receipt and thanking for the contribution.

I have also now added the list of contributions received at the LAN. I just need to confirm that the cash held matches the written records I hold of who contributed what!  I hope to do this tonight.  At the same time I will also reconcile the LAN fee cash held (the £15 LAN fee).

Totals for all of these funds will be posted later today along with a new balance for the community funds.

On behalf of the community, thank you for your generosity.  The server purchased did a fantastic job at the LAN and when it goes into the London server rack in November you *will* notice the difference!

The only thing currently under consideration is the acquisition of additional switches to alleviate the slight networking problems we experienced when one 24 port Cisco failed and the remaining two refused to talk to each other!  More details to come as and when the Admins have dicussed it, researched it and decided what's best to do.

I believe its restricted to 8 people. I think its cost more to buy the server software that lets you host more then that. I may be wrong though ;)

I thought I'd also post the LAN a/c info here for the record.

QuoteHere are the accounts for LAN XII.

LAN fees  29 x £15 = £435 (There were 31 attendees - Sulky had his fees returned for spending hours fixing other people's machines and TL fees to come).
Misc revenue = £109
This was from:
Sales of Syrupwaffles = £45
Two x LAN poloshirts = £30 (Smilodon & Jamoe)
Sales of games Prey & Stalker = £13
Donations from People inc. Duvel, Gorion & Bob = £21

Total Money in = £559
Money out - £75 for prizes paid back to Sheepy.

NET PROFITS - £484
TL is adding his fees separately so I have sent £469 to server funds.

Thanks to everyone.

PEN.

PS. On behalf of the server fund I would like to add particular thanks to DuVeL. Not only did he contribute the funds raised from the sales of syrupwaffles to the Server funds (£45) but also donated other cash. His generosity therefore raised over £50 for the server fund !

Amazon again has provided good income via our affiliate link.  I realise that other purchases may have been made via other affiliates, but please be aware that most affiliates have a minimum distribution amount which can often equate to £50 or so.  In the period to date we received only the one payment from Amazon and none from any other affiliate. Please keep using the posted affiliate links as it does help the community in the long term!

A big thank you to those members who have contributed to the runnning costs of the commmunity.  Your support (whether by attending our LAN parties, purchasing via an affiliate link, buying the t-shirts or just by direct donation) allow us to keep our facilities up to date and and to keep providing the gaming environment we all enjoy so much.  Members, on behalf of the Admins, I salute you!  Thank you.

Finally, the existing LAN server is actually Oldbloke's (not the community's) and it is also getting more than long in the tooth for hosting today's games servers, let alone some of the forthcoming games servers that we will no doubt be wanting to play at LAN XIII.  The Admins have therefore decided to utilise some of these funds to purchase a new LAN server.  More info on this will follow when final decisions on spec etc have been made.

The $ funds are retained for the time being in dollars as there is a cost to convert to sterling.  Should there be an opportune moment to avoid charges it will be changed.

The dMw Community Account now has a balance of £1,149.70 and $4.53

The purchase of the replacement for BA2 is being finalised at the moment.
Hosting fees are due in the next month and we are considering the acquisition of switches to replace the fairly old (and increasingly often failing) switches we use at our LANs.  More details will follow.

To date the communtiy funds have been held in a separate personal account of mine.  This is something I have long wanted to change and after a few aborted attempts (due to numpty bank administration requirements) the community finally managed to open a Club/Association account with LloydsTSB last week whilst OB & I were in the same town and could sign documents at the same time etc.  We are currently awaiting confirmatory paperwork for the account to arrive and provide details such as the account number etc.  When this is finalised we will move all funds from the account in my sole name to the new community account and change the Paypal contribution buttons etc.  Signatories to the account are Oldbloke and me.  Details of the account will be posted when available.

Sounds easier than with Barclays, had to visit them 3 times and wait about a month to get an account for a small business.

After reading this thread I was finally convinced it was time to update paypal with my new bank card details, and make a donation. Keep up the good work.

To update the above.

I also believe that LionHeart also donated £20 via paypal/transfer to the Community Fund.

He did try and give me the cash but caught me at a bad minute as I'd just spent a couple of hours doing the accounts, counting it, filing it and transferring the money to the dMw Account. (He kindly then did it online)

Apologies if I was slightly grumps (:thumbsup2:)........  I had one helluva hangover on Saturday (for which I squarely blame Messers Oldbloke, LameDuck and Doorman for their respective bottles of Whisky and Rum :))

Firtly, thanks for the donation and sorry if I missed the post, there's a lot happening on the forum and things can get missed.  The accounts are not audited daily, so please do not expect an instant response.  If you want confirmation of receipt then send me or Oldie a PM, we both have internet access to the account if payments were made directly there.  However, this is something I would prefer not to see happening as a general rule as it does require time to make such a confirmation if it is out of the normal reconciliation cycle.  So, where did you send the money, when, how much, in which name and with which payment reference please?  Feel free to continue this by PM.

To conclude KKNDs post, I found out which account he had made a payment to and confirmed receipt.  The money is not yet logged in this thread as the Paypal account has not been reconciled since 12th November, so the money is sat at Paypal and will be transferred into the dMw account at the next reconciliation when all the info in this thread is posted and updated.  KKND has been PM'd and informed.

Aye LAN switches are due to be replaced before the April LAN and we're currently in discussion about how to progress that issue.  Afaiaa that's the only major one-off expenditure due in the next 3-4 months, the rest is the usual hosting, licence renewals etc.

Thought i'd chip in.

The switches seemed fine to me the problem is the pc's such as vista and xp not recognizing each other on the work group. The past two lans its been an issue. Direct ip access has worked but i think we need to come up with a solution to the problem or a workaround. The speed across the network for me at least seems adequate as the most traffic is usually at night time when lots of people have gone to bed anyway.

If you want to rewrite how Microsoft networking operates then feel free. However, because everyone will have different workgroups/domain entries on their PCs it is always going to be an issue.

The last few LANs we have had an increasing number of dead ports cropping up, some of the switches have literally been DOA at the next LAN when they worked fine at the last LAN and the managed switches are running unknown configs which are probably conflicting.  In addition, some of the switches will not talk to each other (making uplinking difficult) and the typical server ping has been steadily climbing and was at 20-30ms last LAN which is way over what we should experience, file transfers allowing of course.  Moving to gigabit switches from the same brand should allow us to experience a greatly improved level of connectivity and far more resilience.

Ghosty, I think we pretty much decided at the last LAN that we're going to replace the switches when funds allowed

You've spent enough time helping me set up the LAN to realise we're constantly swapping them out to get the thing working. :flirty:

Last LAN was a nightmare and frankly I'm not spending another day and a half trying to get one half of the room to see the other half

Nice Kit.

Did we really need 5?

I mean we only have max of 50 players at the cromwell so 4 ( 64 ports) would have serviced.

80 ports seems a bit excessive to be honest when the money could have been kept for other costs

How many tables are there?
How many people run 2 NICs (gaming and leeching)?

Uhm... 4 tables me thinks? Around ten at each... very few use more than one NIC. With servers in total I don't think we surpass 50.

Yes.

As you can see from the above we did actually think about it before purchasing, so it is not excessive when you consider that port sizes tend to be 8, 16 or 24 in the range we are considering.

We're only upgrading the network to cope with your leeching anyway. :norty:

Yes.

We had a few really choice items that sold well. Your Nostromo went for £25 I believe, FatBob's steering wheel went for £50, another wheel went for £27 etc. Delankster brought along some tshirts off his own bat which sold really well.

GreekChef also deseves a mention as he was singlehandedly buying up enough crap to open his own pc store :lmfao:

Community Account update
The Community is run on a 'not for profit' basis, however it still costs money to be able to host the games we support, to keep the hardware running smoothly, pay our software subscriptions, meet anticipated future expenditure and to hold a contingency fund for emergency hardware replacement or hosting arrangements.  The purpose of the Community Fund is to meet these eventualities so that we can keep the dMw Community running, whatever happens.  The Community Admins monitor these factors and discuss possible future eventualities on a regular basis and deem the current level of funding for the commmunity to be appropriate given the factors involved.

These are the LAN Accounts for April 2011:

Money received in from LAN sub fees: £330.00
Money received in from people becoming supporting members (Feezuki, ChronosMark, Dark Angel): £36.00
Cost of prizes : £60.00 (Bills received from Ninja_Freak for £32.91 + £14.57  + £10.99 = £58.47) For ease of accounting - and to save trying to get change - I rounded this up to £60.00
Cost of hospitality : £30.35

Total: £275.65 which I'll transfer to the dMw bank account tomorrow.

Thanks everyone !

I'd like to thank everyone who attended the LAN - both gaming and socialising - for making it such a success.

With regards to finances, we made a small surplus of £54.47 for the LAN. This takes into accounts the costs of the dogtags for attendees and winners, Public Liability Insurance and the one off costs for the playing cards and shufflers etc.

We'd particularly like to thank those who donated money to the server funds in addition to funds and fees. There were quite a few of you and it all helps. Whether it was donating syrup waffle money, giving us your Sterling before you fly off back home or just wanting to contribute, it's appreciated.

As usual, all monies raised go to maintain the server funds and/or help pay for server rentals.

Thanks

Yes, I know it's been a while since I posted so here's a quick precis for you.

Our bank account balance currently stands at £1,078.84. Unfortunately, my authenticator machine isn't working atm and a new one is one order so I don't have any more information than that.

Our Paypal account balance is £199.21  (comprising £154.68 and USD $71.59).

So overall, we have funds of £1,278.05

Our income is primarily derived from supporting members (currently standing at 77 active and 81 lapsed) and potentially a small surplus from the LANs

Once again, we'd like to thank all of you who continue to support dMw be it by supporting member, donation or LAN events. All money raised goes to support the community be it our own server, rented game servers, TS, hosting or bandwidth.

In addition to the above, recent activity also includes upgrading BA4 to 32GB ram (courtesy of Albert) and we purchased a backup USB Drive which sits alongside the server.

If anyone has any queries, comments or suggestions then please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you.

Hi all,

We had a surplus at the October LAN and ended up with £295.00 over and above costs.

The vast majority of this income was from new supporting members (which was a pre-requisite for attending the LAN). Those people have now be badged up with our thanks. if anyone is missing their badge then please let me know.

The income brings our bank account to just over £1,000 and a paypal balance of £276.65.

Thanks

This thread hasn't been updated in a long time although there have been other discussions in other threads before you shout at me. :)

Thanks again to everyone who supported us at the LAN. That has added £305 to the funds.

In addition, Sneaky has donated £25 in lieu of payment for a graphics card - thank you. (There may have been other donations at the LAN but I just get the total figure).

So I've added both to the bank account totalling £330. TL and OB have paid for their mugs so I think we're totally squared.

All in all, the server funds are looking in good shape considering we spunked the best part of £3K on a server last year.

We currently have 85 supporting members (including the ones which renewed at the LAN and which I'll update tomorrow).

The dMw bank account has £2,364 therein and there's £664 in the paypal account.

With the purchase of BA6 last year our hardware is good (thanks again to Whitey for hosting it) and we don't think there's major outgoings expected over and above our normal.

We will have to purchase some new switches for the LAN at some point and we'll let you know.

Thanks again chaps and chappeses. 100% of what we take goes into the community pot so you're really donating to yourselves!

More than happy to answer any questions or queries you have either here or on PM.

Thanks for the update Pen.

One item of major expenditure not mentioned, which has been on hold whilst funds recover from the BA6 purchase, is an upgrade to our forum software.  That will reduce that balance by a chunk.  It was planned for 2018, but BA6 put a hold on things, so hopefully that will come on stream again during 2020.
