Title: dMw and Twitter
Post by: Sparko on July 18, 2015, 12:09:54 AM
Hi Guys,

I brought up the question of whether we should have a dMw presence on Twitter at the last GL meeting and just wondered whether it had been discussed any further with the community admins or council?

I know some members don't particularly like social media but i really think having a Twitter account may be beneficial to us.  It is massively different to the likes of Facebook or anything like that.

i have been using Twitter for about 3 years now and what i like about it is YOU choose what to read/follow and YOU decide who follows you and who you would like to see your 'tweets'.  The amount of control you have is really quite surprising.

I just think it would be a great way to connect with our desired elements of the pc gaming community.  When i agreed to take on the Flight Sim section i started following Dovetail games (the guys that have taken over MS Flight Sim Steam Edition) and they agreed with me that they would 'retweet' the info about the monthly fly ins and anything else flight sim related, which meant another 3k plus people saw the tweet.  This could potentially happen for any of our supported games with the respective developers. The only problem i had is that i was using my personal account, which i didnt mind doing but  it would have looked a lot better had it come from a 'dMw Gaming Community' account, because then gamers that look at Dovetail's tweets would have seen a tweet from a Gaming Community and not just a random person...me, meaning they may be directed to the forums.

It may take a bit of administering (which im happy to take the burden) but i do think that we will benefit from it, if we manage it correctly.

Thoughts?

Arithon especially and to some extend sneaky and and I have used Twitter to promote dMw in the Elite community where Twitter is important. We used our own accounts not a dMw account.

I suggest using the dMw tag in brackets after your name you are using in game name if communicating with a particular gaming audience. I think this is just a personal thing but agree that is could be used effectively as a marketing tool.

Reddit too. Both valuable tools.

I'm not adverse to using Social Media as long as it doesn't actually draw people away from the dMw forums. However as far as I can tell almost all social media is about a few popular celeb types broadcasting to their followers and the rest of us mortals  loudly shouting into the wind (nobody's listening) It's not enough to just post stuff to an empty Twitter feed, we need to hone our social media kung fu skills to get discovered. However our Facebook and Google+ pages are a testament to the fact that we really don't use social media at all in any effective way, so I'm not sure how we're going to achieve anything better on Twitter without seriously looking at how we  effectively use it. I've neither the ability or to be honest the interest to learn how to do that but if others can take on the role then personally I've no issues.

Twitter is nothing like Facebook or Google+.  Whilst its still technically 'Social Media' it is nothing like them, it would allow us to connect with with other areas of the PC gaming world.  We would choose who to follow and we would choose who follows us.

As i said before i have been a user of Twitter for about 3 years now and i am very particular about who i follow.  In fact i don't think i follow 1 celebrity, unless you call a Grimsby Town FC player a celebrity :P.  Its all about building a link with other people/groups of people that want, or are looking for, the same thing.

I just feel that we at least ought to try it.  I totally agree that Facebook wouldn't work for us and maybe not Google+ but Twitter is so different in the way it links you to people.

I also cant see how this would pull people from the forum as Twitter is literally a kind of 'announcement' app/tool so there would be no worry there.  Its not like people would be posting long messages that would deter them away from the forums, that's not how it works.

Twitter ingnoramus alert ...

So could we create an official dMw Twitter account that a select few could post to but with those posts always showing as authored by the account (not the individuals)?

I could see some mileage in that.

Yes,

But dont confuse a 'post' with a Tweet, its not like posting messages on a forum or a page.

Here is my idea, The community admins would have the ability to tweet...no one else

We could have a 'Requested Tweet' area on the GL forums, or maybe even the admins area, and then the powers at be can decide whether to broadcast that on Twitter or not.

Simple things like tweeting 'We are hosting a competitive match night on dd/mm/yyy #csgo, visit the forums for more info'

or

'The next dMw LAN party is open for booking, drop by the forum for details'

or

'We are ready for Star Citizen are you? @RobertsSpaceInd'

The # means that if anyone searches on twitter for a certain thing our tweet may show up.  So if in a tweet we said #csgo then it would show in the search results. In context 'Monday night is our #csgo night'

The @ means that you would be 'tagging' someone in the tweet, so like above @RobertsSpaceInd is the official Star Citizen Twitter account so we could Tweet something like 'dMw are proud to be supporting @RobertsSpaceInd in Star Citizen'
Which would then mean they actually see this message and would then decide to 'retweet' it or not which if they did would mean exposure for us and who know, they may start following us.

It would be slow from the off but i really do think it could work

Thanks for the tutorial, Sparko. Excellent info :thumb:

I'll discuss this with the Council and keep you and the other GLs in the loop.
