Hey. I was an original owner of the Retaliator (got it off the anniversary sale last year) and when it was released I was just awe struck. Still am. I was just wondering how people are approaching the module sales?
Here are my thoughts:
I INSTANTLY melted my tali for the bare version for the LTI. It wasn't a question really - for me at least. The modules gave me some pause for thought though. I'm a much more peaceful person but i'd never shy away from a battle if it came knocking, so losing the torpedos wasn't an issue. I picked up 2 cargo pods, a living pod (what can I say - i'm an old school RPer at heart) and got the smaller of the two torpedo bays. If i was to get anything else, it would likely involve the assault module. I must admit, i'm curious what the mechanics involving the living space will be. However, I don't think i'll be disappointed if it was 'for show'.
It might be an idea to drop everything but a cargo or living pod and get the assault. Not really sure. But I digress - what have/would you guys be doing?
I've been wondering about this. I have an LTI Retaliator from really early on, which means I only paid $250 for it. I like the two bomb bays and I'm a sucker for LTI so I'm currently thinking I'll keep them.
It's tough though. I'm primarily a peaceful / civilian role in these games. But that means I already have my Starliner, Carrack, Phoenix, 890 and freelancer. All of them are pretty civilian orientated. Even my avenger is more of a shuttle with guns.
The only ships I have for combat are my Idris and its gladius escort, and the Retaliator. The Idris isn't exactly a ship I can see myself getting to fly very often and when I do, it'll probably have a peaceful goal. The Gladius' are great, but there's only so much you can do with a light fighter on its own.
Which leaves the Retaliator as my only military ship, so I'm resisting the urge to turn it into yet another VIP transport or cargo hauler. My gut says to switch the front bomb bay for a drop pod, then switch the rear for cargo for supplies. Or possibly living space for all those marines. It would still be military, but would have a more interesting focus. Then again, it relies on you hiring a lot of marines to enjoy properly.
If I keep the bomb bays, it'll be a good escort for the Idris, if we can get enough people together...
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

I think you'll be able to swap out the modules in the PU if needed. I've kept mine as a bomber/torp ship for the time being.

If, like me, you don't see yourself as a 'Top Gun' then, when we're working together on combat missions, you would (as you say) need to have the Retaliator as the ship you bring to the party so arm it to the teeth with 'shoot-and-run-away' ordnance :D
That's kind of my theory too, I'm old & slow, so I need to fire something nuke-sized from well out of the range of danger! :norty:
When in doubt - nuke it from orbit ;)
Aye. I'm pretty much the same :)
thinking of having 1 as my second ship, not sure what setup tho.
Depends what you want to use it for. I have very few 'fighting ships' and am not massively capable in a dog-fighting role, so I see it as my non-dog-fighting miltary ship (ie the original role), but if you want it to be a cargo or drop-ship then the other modules might attract you more than the torpedo bays. For me it's the same rationale as the Freelancer MIS.
I guess u could use it for multi roles, just swap out the modules
You'll be able to do that in the 'verse yes, and switch or 'upgrade' to whichever config you prefer in the PU. Buying now is the LTi question - do you want to back the game a little more and get LTI in exchange?

I need LTI no matter how useless it is.
I think TL's point was that the 'new' Retaliator comes with LTI as well, so you can always plump for a new one and still get some of that LTI lovin' :D

But the bomb bays aren't.... it's slightly useless without those.
Either way, I melted for a new one and some modules. I intend to reverse it via concierge, but the idea is I'll always have them as a backup in my account history.
That's a very good point, JT. I didn't realise until the Q&A that the bomb bay modules on the original come with LTI, but the new ones don't.
I guess they had to hold something back for the original pledgers.
Yea. Glad they did even though it might cheese some people off.
Yeah, I'm one of those that would rather everyone be able to buy everything - but if someone's going to give me something a little extra then I'll take it ;)
