Title: Custom User.cfg Guide (for Performance or Quality)
Post by: Obsydian on August 12, 2015, 11:04:08 PM
Here's a link to BoredGamer's guide to customising the User.cfg file:
http://redacted.tv/threads/custom-user-cfg-guide.41/

Why would you want a custom User.cfg file?
The User.cfg file stores overrides to various CryEngine settings (both in-built and CIG-specified) and allows you to customise how the Star Citizen runs on your PC.  Need better performance?  There are settings for that.  Need better graphical quality?  That can be done too!

The above guide contains links to versions of the User.cfg file that you can download.

The following video gives an overview of using the User.cfg for performance:

Have fun!

Really useful. Still curious know know what optimisations wil be made for the final version. While yet until we find that out.

My in-game bit (e.g. AC) was fine with good frame rates, but my hangar performance sucked donkey balls to the extent that I could not drive the buggy without hitting things before they were rendered on screen.

This config turned my hangar from unusable to gloriously smooth and did not seem to impact on my AC quality.   I know the hangar is unoptimised, but this puppy is highly recommended as a 'make do' until an optmised version of the hangar is released.

Thanks for the info and link Obs, it made a massive difference!

It's worth noting that optimisations won't be a single step that fixes everything. Optimisations will come in gradual steps that you may or may not notice from one version to the next, so if optimisation is the thing that is keeping you from playing right now, then I'd suggest you play anyway and get used to how it currently is, as it will likely be this way for quite a while.

That said, although it's not optimised just yet, they have been tweaking it, and it is noticeably better than it was 6 months ago. Times to get into game are now a fraction of what they once were (I'm talking about 30-40 seconds now compared to about 3 minutes!) so its much less frustrating to play several games or, as w experienced last night, having to restart games.

The interface is also constantly being tweaked and is now way smoother and more polished than ever. It still has a way to go, but it's getting there.

The config file is only setting overrides for internal CryEngine settings, and I expect that there will be graphics options eventually built into the game that will be used to do the same, so there's no real magic going on here, just turning some stuff off (e.g. motion blur - I hate that!) and capping limits (e.g. frame rate) to aid smoother performance.

Updated the OP with a link to a very good guide to using the User.cfg file.

Thanks for all of this Obsydian. I've created my config and will play later..

Quick question tho: can you configure joystick's etc. in the user.cfg file?

Sorry, no you can't.  Control config is held in an XML file.  You can use the in-game tools to set up your controls the way you like them and then export the settings so you can later re-import them following a patch.  But that said, the control setup will be changing considerably soon, according to Chris on the latest 10 for the Chairman.

I'm fairly sure it is, I swear I've seen people talking about it on the forums. Not saying it may not have issues, but if Windows detects it and all the buttons work then it should work in SC too.

Might just be a Windows 10 issue then.

I got it to work but the trigger doesn't. Also, while I can see the device in Windows I can't access any of the properties to test the calibration etc.

That sounds more likely - if Windows can't see it working then it won't get through to the game.

Maybe look for a Win10 driver for it?

I've flying twin sticks, T1600 for strafing and such the other is the Thrustmaster Hotas X. It's a nice stick and for the price it's worth it. But you need to setup from scratch which means trial and error. If you don't know anything about setting up a joystick in game it's going to be a nightmare for me to write everything down. If your around tomorrow I'll can be on TS and explain how as It's easier. Also your going to need to adjust your curves as the stick can be slightly loose. Again we can go through that also.

I don't have one, I'm still using the T16000.  I'm deferring any HOTAS purchase until the SC stuff comes out.  Sorry!
