Title: Inflamed Tonsils - What to eat
Post by: Gorion on September 24, 2015, 02:17:03 PM
Does anyone have an idea what to eat with inflamed and infected (small bumps) tonsils?  I also have a Coxsackie virus (HFMD).

The pain in my throat is unbearable, even taking a small sip of water is extremely painful.

I tried to have some liquidised broth, but gave up after half a tablespoon.  I was given AmoxiClav (amoxicillin 875mg, Clavulansäure/clavulanic acid 125mg), and Solupred 20mg.  Both twice daily.  Was also told to take paracetamol every 4 hours.  I'm taking Beechams sore throat lozenges as well.

With all these pills, eating something is mandatory but it doesn't seem possible to do so...

These have a great numbing effect as I child had reguular issues with my tonsils but these helped alot.  They aint that tastey but might help with the eating for stuff.

Also you cant go wrong eating ice cream :)

I swear by this stuff whenever I get a proper sore throat.

Apparently the local pharmacies don't stock any sort of anaesthetic products and I had to resort to taking catafast (dicofenac potassium 50 mg).  They had Decuadin not Decuacaine and it only has the antiseptic part of Decuaciane, so it's not going to do anything for the pain.

Hopefully it will left me swallow the pills tonight, and hope the antibiotics work and reduce the symptoms/pain tomorrow.

When I'm at the LAN, I'll go check if that Boots in March stock any of the medicines you guys posted and try to buy some.  Hopefully a prescription is not required.

There's no correlation to the name, and what you're thinking about.

Here's what it is (http://www.medicinenet.com/coxsackie_virus/article.htm).

May I suggest that you take yourself off to your Doctor for proper examination +/- antibiotics.

Analgesia will maybe make you feel a little better, but won't necessarily help you get rid of the problem.

Tonsillitis interfering with your eating is not really something you should be coming only to an internet forum for, so get off to your GP :norty:

I don't think I can really say more tbh :woot2:

Edit - I actually read your post, and you've already been to your Doc. Good man, make these Doctors work for their money eh? ;)

Even had blood in my saliva a couple of hours ago.  I bought some TCP liquid antiseptic to gargle with before going to bed, hopefully it will stop it from getting worse.

I'll guess we'll see in the morning, by then I hope that the antibiotics kick in and diffuse the situation.

Tonsillitis can be nasty, which is why I jumped right on the go to your Doc (and don't just rely on the ice cream :D).

If it isn't improving go back to the Docs, and if at any point you develop real trouble with your swallowing or start to feel like you are struggling to get a breath in, go right to your local Emergency Department :)

Hope the antibiotics can get on top of it asap!

I feel your pain. When I had Glandular Fever last year I survived on Yohgurts and forcing myself to eat solids (Not recommended), before being rushed to hospital to have my tonsils scraped with a metal hook and being pumped full of steroids and antibiotics. Not the nicest experience of my life but I felt fine by the next morning, and I got signed off work for two weeks. Ace.

Hope you feel better soon bud.

Went to the hospital today, as this morning was really something out of this world.

Was given Flagyl 400mg, Remeprazole 20mg on top of the other antibiotics, and Difflam to gargle with.  The Difflam worked a bit, it took away some of the pain.

Well it sounds like a step in the right direction mate hope you feel better soon.

I have to say it's more than a step.  Just managed to eat some chicken breast, and my body felt like it was exploding with joy.

I haven't had eaten anything for over a day, and protein since Monday.  Lost 5 kilos already.

Going to take more protein and some eggs and broccoli while I can swallow.  That Difflam with a sachet of catafast after worked wonders.

My feet are something else though, can barely walk as I have bloody blisters all over my foot sole.  Going to soak them in salt water and antiseptic later.  Hopefully it works.

You wanna know why I was so 'get to the doctor'?

Actually you probably don't, but I saw a really bad case of 'tonsillitis gone nasty' in A and E last year, and well you don't want to end up in that situation :D Maybe when you're all better I'll share the details  eh? :P

Sure, we'll have a chat at the lan if all goes well.

By any chance do you have any idea what I can do to speed up the healing process of all these red blisters on my feet/hands/face?  Hydro-cortisone perhaps?

Walking to the loo has become a nightmare...

Don't use hydrocortisone on it, it will only make things worse.

Realistically you just have to wait for it to get better by itself. I certainly wouldn't go further than using a simple emollient (moisturiser) if you must - but at best it will only maybe sooth a little.

Was given something called Dasselta (Desloratadine 5mg) for the burning blisters as this morning was quite something.

Was told to soak feet in potassium permanganate.

Anti-histamine and disinfectant.

The anti-histamine may help a little with the burning. Difficult with a virus, not really anything you can do to actually treat it :/

Can take some time I'm afraid!

I guess we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

I do hope I'll be fine prior to the lan.  I don't want to miss it, plus the missus is coming over for the first time as well; wouldn't want to ruin that.

You realise that with an ageing gaming membership and you, our resident doctor, this is only going to get more frequent. Soon we'll start asking you to hold morning surgery at the LAN so we can discuss our ailments :flirty:

:thumbsup2:

All is well now.

The virus has been sent to the graveyard.  May it never return.
