Title: So which system do we call "home"?
Post by: Obsydian on November 18, 2015, 01:02:06 PM
With the recent release of the Star Map (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/starmap) I got to thinking about what exactly it is that we plan to do in the 'verse, and where exactly should we base ourselves?

So, guys, have a look over the map, cross reference some of the systems with the Star Citizen Wiki (http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Systems?display=exhibition&sort=mostvisited) and let us have your thoughts...

:D

I'd thought I'd start making a few comments in here regarding what I've read and seen.

But first I think there's a few things to cover before we look directly for a home or base system. First off, do we really need to be looking for a home system? We have limited numbers and don't have the power to hold anything. Wouldn't it be more advantages to have our fleet on a continuous move. (Something like Battlestar Galatica) We're in a perfect position to do this as most (if not all) of our members are on the same time zone. Roaming from system to system, although requiring excellent communication, does offer some safety and surprise.

Second, will larger ships like the Idris be involved. If so I would like to suggest something, and discuss if there is a cause for concern.

It sounds like capital ships will only be allowed to travel through only large JPs (Blue). If this is the case then wouldn't it be better to start in a section of space that allows multiple escape routes for Capital ships. The Galaxy is split in choke points for different section of the map. If you look at Nix (RED), your notice that each route leading off each large JP has only one direction. This may cause us to be predictable in our movements.

But if you look at the sectors I've highlighted in (GREEN) then your see that all large JPs have alternative routes. This may be something to consider when looking for flight paths.

Note:
Leir and Banshee (PURPLE) - not sure how much other members read other forums but I noticed that these to are the most suggested areas of interest when discussing a home systems. Leir is a gateway to open space. Banu on one side and Vanduul on the other. It's a non UEE system that has a lot of enterprising opportunities. Hence its popularity. It's going to be a hive of activity!

This is why you have recon and forward observers. I'm hoping to upgrade my reliant to a science/explorer model soon too. There is no shortage in our ship capacity. Plus. We could always find additional jump points. Though I don't recall if CR said we would find the large JPs

We're also part of PACT. Some of our new allies have membership that runs into thousands. They already have plans to take control of certain areas and this will at least shape the politics of the map. Where our powerful allies are based may well have an effect on where we decide to call home? There might also be the Star Citizen version of guild halls. Our own instanced docks, workshops..... whatever housed within existing cities, outposts etc.

This sounds a very interesting prospect and certainly would help resolve the dilemma of security.

Indeed, so I suspect we'll need to wait a while before being able to say precisely where we'll start out (and at least wait for the map to move out of alpha).  It's something I will bring up at the next PACT council meeting and I'll feed back any information to the DMW Board as and when it becomes available.

*Groan*

I realise that it was a joke, but seriously the Kellog system is probably not a good place to call "home" seeing as it is just one jump from a Vanduul system!

But the Vanduul system in question is Virgil, a popular character from a popular 60's TV cereal who flew futuristic ships and always saved the day!
I don't see a problem here :D

A little off subject but as a explorer I think I might delve deeper into this little mystery. It's close to home and sounds like something you can get your teeth into from day one.

The stanton system looks interesting, certainly looks good for cargo jobs.
