FSX has a load of addons available and most of them are not on steam.   Which DLC/addons depends on what you like to do in FSX.  For me, I like to fly commercial airliners and have an aircraft where practically all the buttons work (including the flight management computer) and everything looks lovely in high resolution.  So I ended up getting (amongst other things):

-PMDG 777
-RAAS Pro
-FS2crew
-a full scenery and texture update courtesy of Orbx FTX Global, Orbx FTX Vector, OpenLC, terrain packs for the regions I like to fly
-airport packs updates for the particular airports you like to fly from and to
etc.

-want better clouds? REX
-want nicer trees, there's an addon for that too
-want better lights at night? yep, there's an addon
-want real world & real time weather, yep there's an addon
-want to see more traffic, you can get an addon
-want to talk to ATC and execute a flight plan in real time?  VATSIM
and the list goes on.

Over time you accumulate more addons/DLC, more aircraft types and establish which bits you really enjoy.   For me, the enjoyment is learning a complex system and being able to follow the checklists on a 777-300 from cold & dark, programming the FMC with the flight details and parameters, then completing a flight and shutting it down at the stand at the destination airport.    Vobler, for example, seems to prefer smaller planes and LOVES flying around his Norway airports (and it is bloody spectacular too if you have the Norway pack installed).

FSX is not the cost, it's the gateway to a marvellous world.  What you then spend on it is up to you.  My advice, get the program for £4, you'd be daft not to.   Try the big planes, the small planes, major airports and little airfields hidden next to that Norgian fjord, find out what you like.   Then post up and ask about stuff in the forums and we can guide you to addons/DLC to look at.

It's a marvellous sim world and you can easily lose hours in it when you want to!

Hehe, you're welcome!

RT, take a read of this pdf, it gives you an idea of just how many things in FSX can be changed.

[pdf]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2805949/FSX/FTX%20Definitive%20Guide%20v2.pdf[/pdf]

And if you want to see how complex and realistic some of the addons can be (like the PMDG 777), then watch this:

The first hour is all about the aircraft systems, you're hard pressed to find a switch that is not live!   If you just want to see the workload when flying, then skip to 57mins 30 sec and they'll do a quick engine start and short flight.
