what do people think of the new way of qualifying, the 90 sec drop, personally i don't like it, I liked the way it was done before, with it building up from q1-q2-q3.
what's your guys view on it
It was a joke and will/must be scrapped before race 2.
The tv commentators with all the electronic data screens help could not correctly work out the fact that you needed at least 3 minutes to exit the pits, complete an out lap and then get your hot lap done, neither could some of the teams apparently. Channel 4 commentators did not even know the rule about the chequered flag at the end of each Q session.
Just imagine how confused the poor spectators felt without all the data screens and behind the scenes analysis.
It also meant that you knew up to 4mins 30 secs ahead of time who was getting knocked out in some instances.
Finally, it was disastrous for the last 3 mins of Q1, the last 3 mins of Q2 and last 5 mins of Q3 to have nobody on track (or nobody that counted).
Worst bloody idea I have seen in a long time from Bernie & Jean, second only to the sprinkler system proposal. Idiots.
brundle hates it...Jensen didn't seem to impressed and the I thought that the fact that at 3 mins to the chequred flag Lewis was on pole....W the absolute F
bad bad bad in my opinion please get rid before q in r2
Do they not test these things before trying them out in a live Grand Prix? Evidently not. Amateur hour again from Bernie.
Let them have Free/fresh sets of boots for all Quali laps. System seems over complex designed to just trip up teams and mix up the grid.
I didn't like the new Quali format either but I heard from the Swedish commentators this morning before the race that they are going back to the old format for the next race, also for verification I found the same info on the bbc site: http://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/35850766
Yep, back to the old way. THANK GOODNESS.
I actually didn't mind it in Q1, but Q2 and Q3 were completely pointless.
Fascinating stuff from the drivers today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/35882820
Are Bernie's days numbered? I certainly hope so.
Ohhh the Volkswagen may join in. If they can be trusted not to have any false readings :D
So the poison dwarf has got even more money now. From 2019 Sky will have sole broadcast right it wont be on Terrestrial tv, but they will show the British Grand Prix on a free to air channel.
Well how very kind of them!

Great ... I'm not paying for the whole sky sports package just to watch a race every two weeks...

Highlights of each race will also be on the FTA channel.

What he said. Don King was able to more or less destroy professional boxing as a major world sport and Bernie Ecclestone appears to be doing the same to F1.
RTL3 and Veronica air it Live for Free for Dutch people.
I did mean in the UK not all over the world sorry
Quote from: Jean TodtQ1 and Q2 gave us exactly what we expected
Jean must have been watching the wrong channel on his TV. Muppet.
Another horribly boring qualifying session with large percentages of track time with nobody on track. Was it predictable? Yes. Could it have been avoided? Yes. Will Jean Todt come to his senses? Who knows.

Quote from: BBC Andrew BensonFormula 1 bosses have failed to agree on a new format for qualifying after a meeting at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Teams discussed the failure of the new elimination format with F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt, president of governing body, the FIA.
Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said Todt and Ecclestone refused to revert to the 2015 system despite teams' wishes to do so.
An entirely new system proposed by the FIA will be discussed again next week.
And who said the monkeys don't run the show? The public want it reverted to avoid the abysmal mess that the current format is, the teams all want it reverted, the drivers all want it reverted, but Todt and Eccelstone don't.
The idiots are running the asylum.

Yep that is totally true, really hope they come to their senses but I highly doubt it sadly :/
I am reading that the preferred Todt/Ecclestone proposal is an average lap time for pole position?
WTH?
Seriously. F1 qualifying is about the being the fastest, not the best average. Pole could go to someone who was not fastest under the Todt/Ecclestone disaster proposal.

Corner 1 apex. Lap 1.
Anyone else see what looked like a brake test from the leader?

I was thinking that also. The wrong guy got the drive through :taz:
I believe he was remembering 2014 and how he was overtaken two years ago. Still, it wasn't very British......
Today, all eleven F1 teams rejected the 'hybrid qualifying proposal' in favour of returning to the 2015 style of qualifying. Their letter was submitted to CVC, Bernie & Jean. Let's see what they cook up next. I'm expecting something where perhaps they have to change to a competitor's car between laps and then take an average their 2nd best lap time and the Formula 3 pole lap from the previous season.
That'll be more exciting. Yeah, that should do it. :getmecoat:
bring on the weaponised robot racecars (http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/04/self-driving-f1-racing-cars-are-a-thing-and-its-coming-in-2016/) :flirty:
An onboard lap of the new Baku city circuit. It looks like the race will be awesome if they can handle all the bumps!
Very very cool...surprised the castle wall isn't protected

Gentleman's agreement with Merc, whereby they provided him with the best mechanic team & hampered LH in order for him to win it this year, provided he agree to retire at the end of the season.
Or maybe it was more than he could stand. Surely his earning potential is at a max now. Bit of a bad time to jack it in.

Not really. He's got a WC through good fortune (or, more accurately, Lewis' bad) and would be unlikely to do that again next year. He probably doesn't relish having his nose rubbed in it after every 2017 LH race win.
He could go to another team and have a more chilled role.

Actually that makes a lot more sense to me than him retiring. I'll put my hand in the air and join Oldie, I did *not* see that one coming.
Might start a give jenson a go page
