I feel I missed the WOW wave as I didn't have a PC when it was first released, I always had friends who had played a bit of it but after a while I didn't really hear them talk much about it so wanted to know what's this game like in its current form? Is it a game where a new person can join and then catch up with you higher level guys quickly or will I need to spend 20+ hours on a character to get the ability to play with you lot ?
You can try the first 20 levels free, so if you are curious I'd say give it a go. It is however one of those games that are not very special on your own, but you will find fellow dMw members on the Aszune server (Alliance faction).
I guess if you plan on playing it, now is a good time to try it, as you should be able to catch up to the current level cap before the Expansion. You usually get a free level boost with the expansion, but then you miss out on learning gradually how your choosen hero works, and I would suggest you try some different ones before deciding which one to boost to max level.
In it's current state the game has been dumbed down and classes have become too similar to eachother in my opinion. Vanilla and the first expansion were by far the golden age of WoW. Effort vs reward has been reduced so low that you pretty much get handed everything in the game for free, and things like skill, tactic/coordination and knowledge are rarely a factor anymore. It is however a solid game and good fun to play with friends. That part they haven't been able to break. In the current expansion PvP was the only thing I really felt still offered a challenge.
If you decide to take the dark path then tap up one of our players to throw you an invite . Recruit a friend will give you some game time, goodies and faster leveling. http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/game/recruit-a-friend/
Any thinking of coming back used to do the same with a resurrection scroll but its been removed. It may spring back up for legion we will need to wait and see
I can send you a Recruit a Friend invite if you like. Doesn't take long to get to 100.
What seems a shame is that there was an absolute mass of content that came with WOW and it's various patches. If you zip through this you'll miss hundreds of quests, many dungeons, whole regions of the world, cities, jungles, forests, islands and loads of back story. It's a shame to miss out on all that content. On the other hand if you make sure you finish every quest line and visit every region it could take an absolute age to get to the final areas. So you're sort of between a rock and a hard place.

Completely agree. Leveling used to be slow paced and an adventure all in itself. It used to take all night just to reach level 10! Now you do that in what, 10 minutes?
What I try to do to compensate for this is I choose a different quest line every time I play a character if possible. You usually get to choose at least two zones to continue in, and that lets you experience a lot if you like playing multiple alts. I've gone even further and played multiple alts on both factions even. Sadly most people either don't care about the vast details and storylines, or miss them completely du to the increased pace of leveling. You can skip almost the entire story from lvl 10 to lvl 90 at least just by running random instance groups continuously.
Personally I like the old vanilla Night Elf zones. They used to be so beautiful and exciting to explore. They lost some of their magic in Cataclysm though.

+1 to that.
I've almost completely forgotten all the WOW content.
I'm tempted to roll a decent solo character (hunter, paladin) and work slowly through all the content. For example I'd start as a Dwarf in Dun Morogh then head to Elwin Forest, then Teldrassil, then Azuremist Isle and then whatever the Worgen area is (I know the first bit is instanced). Basically all the 1-10 content I can access. After that it all the 1-20 and so on. Vast amounts of questing will be giving zero XP but it might be fun................ assuming all the stories are as memorable as I vaguely remember?? Then there would be all the soloing dungeons and raid content. The only downer is the subscription. It could take months and months to get through the lot and at a little shy of a £10 a month it's an expensive way to game.
As the other have said you would be more then welcome to have a look at WoW with us but try first with the free to play option so you perhaps get a but of a feel for the game and if it is something up your alley since it might not be worth paying for the game and then after a week or 2 finding that it does not suit you at all. And we will ofc be here, on ts and in-game to help you out if you want it and answer questions that might arise.
it like smilo said its the price that gets me i would rather spend lets say 50 pound on a game i then have forever and can play whenever i want but if i had something that is subscription based then i would feel i would have to play this more to get my money out of it, which i ain't sure i would do because i enjoy playing other games with friends. i does sound like a good game because you all speak so passionately about this game and it makes me want to try it so might have to but not sure right now. a lot of people i ahev heard like the old vanilla wow, one of the main points some of my podcasts that i lisen to have brought up the story about blizzard shutting down one of the only vanilla servers left. thanks for all the responses :D tho guys :byebye:
Please note if you make enough gold in game you can pay for you subs via that, but bewarned you have to go deep in to and I have seen how the innocent have fallen, climb out only to be pulled back in!!!!!
Speaking from experience there matey? :P
I've been MMO clean for the past 5 months - mainly because my 5 month old son needs me whilst the wife is @ work.
I do feel better for it (no more MMO burnout), but I also feel something in my life is now lacking (addiction!).
Does WoW have any non subscription limited play option like SWTOR?

Tob, how much time do you have to spend ingame to earn enough to pay for subscription? Does it take endless hours a month?
