Dead Men Walking

What does this mean?

Well, as we are playing Overwatch matchmaking on a fairly regular basis right now, Wednesday nights will be devoted to Custom Games. There will be semi-organised customs running from 19:45-22:00, with a mixture of Vanilla and Custom settings (think of an all out Winston brawl).

The same ethos applies to these nights as it does general matchmaking. Teamwork is the name of the game. The more 'comical' custom games will no doubt sometimes involve 1 big TS channel and less 'focus', but otherwise we will still be using different TS channels for the teams. There may be room to mix this up later, using in-game comms, but for now these seem pretty borked in custom games so we are sticking to TS.

If we have >12 but <24 people, the extras will be asked to sit out of the custom game for 1 match (2 rounds) before being rotated in. In these cases I will sit out myself, and randomly name the other spectators, in the interest of fairness. Those spectating are more than welcome to hop into matchmaking and join us as soon as their next round ends.

Re: Matchmaking - if customs are simply not your thing and you would prefer to stick to matchmaking, go ahead! You absolutely do not have to join these to be a 'dMw Overwatch-er'. That said there will probably be some matchmaking played towards the end of the evenings, and Friday has become our 'second' and matchmaking focussed night where there should be admins on sorting out teams / groups to help things run smoothly.

If there IS something you want to see done on these or other organised nights, post it up on the forums or let me know!

Finally, balance. we will try to keep the teams as balanced as possible, and will move players around as necessary to try to achieve this. A badly unbalanced game can quickly become an exercise in frustration for the losing team, and although I would encourage teams to try to mix up their characters to overcome obstacles when something isn't working, sometimes experience/ability at the game can make this a particularly difficult thing to do. We don't care how good (or not) you are as a particular character or indeed at the game at all, we just want everyone to enjoy their gaming time.

I work shifts so my night availability changes. But im on most days/nights that i can get on.

Games so far have been fun, and great to see as many in the community now playing this game.

Okay it seems no one has put forward any ideas of what i was aware of so why not try to get people by playing as different classes that poeple wouldn't normally.

First idea - war of the brothers one team hanzo and one team genji short and simple

Second idea - only one class, so simply either attacker, defenders, tanks or support . we can only pick characters from one of these classes. so we could have a big support against support game and see how it goes and same for the other classes.

These my only two i can think off but will talk to you all tomorrow as i indeed to be there to get some overwatch time with you lot

Sounds great man, thanks for making some suggestions. I have a few ideas myself too, but I am keen to get as many as possible.

RE: Comms, we can try using in-game comms next Wednesday - last time we tried it was fairly borked, but am happy to give it another go - if we do this we will all have to try to keep tactical speak to the game comms and banter only in TS!!!

I am thinking a tracers vs piggies match could play out well..

A game with no ults could be interesting. A game with double/triple speed ults could also be interesting.

Tracer vs widow maker

Arcade mode ( this mode all upri abilities have a one second cool down time )

Faster ultras ( ultras take half aslong to use )

Hardcore mode ( not to sure about this one no ultras and either less health or more damage )

Robot wars ( deva vs bastion can even use zenyata ( the medic priest lol) )

Melee mod ( only melee attacker, genji and reihnarts )

Random mode ( like in the beta players are given a random person to play as you make a stratagy on what you get. This makes people try people They won't normally use )

Tonight we will be doing 'competitive' custom games from 8 til 9 ish, and one or two more chilled ones after. The chilled ones may feature a mercy and soldier brawl, and an all lucio pit-based map.

Had good fun again, especially the more competitive games :) shooting people in the face with Pharah's rockets or smashing them with a Reinhardt hammer, what is not to love!

We had quite a few Quick Match games as well, last one was a nail biter but we managed to win it in the end!

Good man Hubbah. On Friday night there should be an admin on organising teams for competitive-mode - come along to that if you're keen on the more competitive stuff.

We had to do a lot of splitting up people and moving around, I hope you all were ok with it. It is difficult in Overwatch to try to group the right people together sometimes!

Thanks for the games! Was good fun! Hopefully we can balance the two comp teams so that we have a good spread of people playing each "class" in each team, i.e. 2 tanks, 2 healers, 2 dps per team. Personally I'm happy to play any, but as healer I'm only good on Mercy and for DPS I prefer Reaper (in case you haven't noticed :happy:) or Torbjörn and as tank either Reinhard or Winston (can do some Roadhog as well but haven't played him enough).

How did the competitive group do?

Won some lost some but I think fun was had by all. Got frustrating towards the end as it can do, but I think that's the clue to stop playing!

Thanks for the games last night! Good fun on comp with many very evenly matched games. The custom games vs other dMw are fun as well, but maybe throw in some silly settings every now and then :)

Yes don't worry at all mate. Wednesdays are our 'official' night, so you'll always find some of the admins on gettng games started, but at the moment we are on almost every night of the week anyway, so you shouldn't be short of a game :)

Cheers! Yeah move went alright. House now, so second floor didn't have the best wifi coverage. Sorted it today with an extender. Seems alright now, as I'm currently downloading the PTR patch (1 GB) at around 11 MB/s :)

Ah smashing.  I've been keen to try and get into this game properly, I shall do my level best to meet up with you fabulous people later.  Any recommendations on characters for less experienced players?  I was looking at moving between Pharah, Mercy and Rei- depending on what the team needed at the time.

It's been a while since I did any online gaming with the dMw, I've forgotten what a blast it can be.

 I do like a challenge though so spiced things up by inadvertently pulling out my microphone lead from my PC, effectively muting myself. Then I bound both fire and the shift alt ability to my main mouse button. This resulted in me running about like a pillock with Torbjorn unable to either fire a gun or drop a turret. One these 'minor' issues were addressed I was able to settle down to my usual level of utterly unremarkable ability.

I do need to learn more than one character though, Lucio only goes so far. I'm wondering which are the simplest DPS classes for a rank newbie?

I would have a go with Soldier 76.

His kit is most like other FPS games, I will run you through it briefly here (using default key bindings).



Weapon - Assault Rifle. Automatic fire. Good at close range. Has weapon spread, over long range against small targets it is better to burst fire. Up close don't worry just let rip.

Shift - Sprint, no cooldown. Gives him great mobility. Can get in and out of situations better than most other characters.

E - Health pack. Area of affect heal. Great for healing not only yourself but also your team!

Q (ULTIMATE) - Tactical Visor - Auto-aim huge damage. Otherwise known as 'press Q to win'. The trick with this is to get yourself somewhere where the enemy can't hide from it. If you have line of sight, you will hit them (multiple enemies at once possible). Try to use this from high ground or behind your enemies. Be aware of shields (Reinheardt for example) as they can block the damage from hitting the enemies.



His kit is fairly simple to use. Overwatch is one of those games where there is a skill ceiling for each hero, some start simple and actually learning their kit doesn't take long - the differences then become between how well you follow the game, how well your team works in fights, and so on. Other heroes have a higher skill ceiling and take more time to learn. Start with the basic heroes with Soldier 76 and work up!

Yeah enjoying learning some new heroes, still find myself using the simpler ones.  I think I need to understand how to use the healers more and be a bit less aggressive

Lucio is relatively easy as a healer in my very limited experience.

He's fast on his feet so quite hard to hit.
Does an area heal so you don't have to specifically target team members, just stay close to them.
He has a heal boost that again is AOE. Your team mates have a big red cross on them when they are low on health so it's a matter of getting close and and hitting 'E'
He can do a knockback which can punt players off edges or get distance so you can escape.
His Ultimate is a 500 point shield in a 30m radius lasting about 6 seconds, which again is AOE and not targeted. The idea (which I often miss) is to use it to counter an enemies Ult or in the last moments of a round when you know the enemy is about to make a final push on the objective.

There are players that can play him very well but he's a nice character to start with. Downsides are he's not very strong, his dps is low and you do get targeted by the enemy a lot being a support class.

A lot of Overwatch is not just learning how to mechanically play your hero, but how to play them within the 'environment' of each game. This depends on not only what your enemy team do, but what your team are doing too. As you start to get more and more into the game, there is an awful lot of strategy that starts to open up.

I would advise watching some YouTube vids, there is a huge community to the game and there are many, many great vids that can help you get to grasps with more than just the mechanics.

For example, I have just started to try to learn Reinheardt. Mechanically he is simple. Shield, hammer, and so on. There isn't really much aiming to be done. That said, a good rein can carry and support teams.. bad reins lose games single handedly! The question with Rein is more of 'what is my role here, what should I be doing right now to support my team'. This last bit is hard to master, as at times your team needs your shield, at times they need you swinging, and at others they need you to initiate.. or even run away! He is much more about gamesense and knowing your role within the game.

Anywho, I can't make this week as I am at work, but some of your lovely admins will be around heading up games :boxing:

I think the key to the balance is to just keep switching it up, worked really well tonight with the player changes every game.

Yeah it certainly helped. I hope all enjoyed it, but its useful to collect any negative feedback too on how we can improve the games if there were still issues with balance etc.
