Title: Upgrade or Not? Options? Suggestions?
Post by: Bunce on January 21, 2004, 09:54:02 AM
Spec i have atm:

P4 2.4
512 RAM
CD-RW
DVD-ROM
17" (needs replacing) monitor
Sound Blaster 128
Geforce 2 Ti
20GB HDD (Windows)
60GB HDD (other stuff)
Shoddy Case
Network Card

Thats about it.

Now its kind of not working as stable as i'd like, so...

I do infact have a buyer for it all (apart from the 60GB, Soundcard, gfx card network, cd-rw)
for £300
I then, in theory can get a 17" TFT for £200 cash.
I can also get anything from //www.aria.co.uk for VAT free... (shhh)
I earn around £400 a month.
Am able to go in debt for about £300-£400 for about 4 months.

I could upgrade my PC slowly, ie, new case, then new this, and just get all the things that wont go out of date so quickly... leaving the motherboard, chip and ram till last.

I'm wondering if anyone has any sources or anything that can get me a new PC, good looking one, etc... for not to much money...

Maybe some good sources of where to get cheap stuff?

Tbh as i say, just wanting some general advice...

So please can people with some spare time give me a few posts to read etc.

Thank you

Granted and i can agree with that... BUT :S

i Could get this spec

Athlon 2800XP
Abit Moutherboard (the best one for this chip can't remember its exact name)
1GB DDR Ram
120GB HDD
Radeon 9600XT
DVD-R
Case (not especially cool tho)
450Watt PSU

for £580

Then i could add my 60gb Hdd, cd-rw, grab a floppy for £8, put my sound card in it, get that 17" TFT for £200...

buT really this is alot of money for me, so i'm looking for other options (cheaper ones:P)

nice tho!

I'm thinking i might upgrade slowly... but still looking for suggestions :D

Thanx

If you want to upgrade slowly then you might want to consider just upgrading the gfx card for the moment.  That will make a significant difference and won;t need the rest of the machine updated.  You can then go back and make whatever other upgrades you want in later months.  The 9800SE seems to be the low cost significant upgrade of the moment, £160 and a 50% chance to soft mod to a 9800 Pro.

My opinion, upgrade the video-card and sound-card. If you have some spare money, upgrade your RAM to 1,024GB. Processor power is not really important for games. But for video-editing for example, you need an hell of a processor! If you have questions, pm me...I am da computer-guru :P!!
