Title: new laptop or upgrading PC
Post by: Arcticfire on July 02, 2016, 12:15:31 AM
Im gonna try and keep this short.

I know 4gig ram > 2 gig ram, but the difference between i7-6600 or i7-5400 (examples) I dont know.... That kinda indicated my knowledge about parts.

Situation:
I have a computer, with W8 32bit, 4gig ram, AMD Radeon HD5800 1Gig, Intel core Q6600 2,4ghz, No SSD, ASrock g31m-gs motherboard and a CM M2 Silent pro 620W.

Its not a lot, I know, but it used to do the trick. Problem is that while playing CS:GO, 99/100 times i miss the pistol round, while playing WoW, the party is crying why I didn't heal them...the reason is because the instance isn't loaded yet and I cant have skype running while playing a game. Just to explain the "problem".

Dilemma
I am gonna need a laptop for university, travelling etc.. etc... So the question is, should I go for a good (gaming) laptop, which doesn't need to be high end but should be able to normally play games. Or should I go for a cheap laptop for text writting, some low req games and go for a pc upgrade and what should I upgrade.

The top of my budget is 11-1200 euros, but the less i can spend the better.

I hope you guys can take the time to help me out, or atleast give me some pointers. So i can enjoy gaming again instead of lagging and waiting.

Arctic/Dreaman.

If what you need at uni is strictly text based stuff, I would consider a chrome book. Teaelle uses one afaik so he should be able to guide you properly.

As for a gaming pc, you might want to wait until you can add more to your budget. Your pc is 10 years old, give or take, and you will need to change all your components.

You can pick up a second hand MSI gaming laptop for â,¬1000 easily with an i7, 16GB and most likely an nVidia GTX870 or 880m graphics card. I bought one recently and it is more than capable of running any game I throw at it.

Just search your most convenient eBay website for MSI Gaming GTX 880 or if you want more modern 970. Sure to get something within your budget and choose a high ranking seller.

Ive been thinking about the ASUS ROG GL552VW-CN471T, its not high-end but thats not really what I need (hence the 10 year old parts i have now :P)
Its 1000 euros atm, is that worth it or am i paying for the brand then?

Having played with a sony vaio (GeForce GT 540M) for years, I'd recommend a cheap laptop for university stuff and an upgrade to your desktop PC.

Here is a short list of cons related to gaming laptops:
- It's hard to impossible to upgrade the hardware when it gets outdated. This means you won't run a laptop for the same amount of time you can go with desktop components.
- Compared to a desktop PC with equal performance, they are quite expensive.
- Mobile hardware is always a compromise between power consumption, performance and miniaturisation.
- There are also some practical problems related to cooling. Laptops throttle the GPU / CPU when they get too hot, when this happens games don't run smoothly anymore

Just my 2 cents :)

overclock your cpu, the Q6600 clocks nicely and add a decent SSD and a GTX970, then you can buy your laptop and save up more money to buy a new skylake i5 or i7 + 8gb ddr4 and motherboard at a later date.

Maybe if the cooling he is using is adequate and the Q6600 is a good one, he'll get 200-400MHz out of it, not a great win unless you have a cooler worth â,¬200 to go with it I would say. Pay â,¬200 for a 500GB SSD and â,¬300 for a 970. Then â,¬500 for a cheaper latptop for school budget of â,¬1000 is blown and the 970 has 1-2 year tops in it I would say.

In terms of the value of gaming laptops, if you move around a lot and want to still game when you move, plus want the benefits of something powerful for school/ work, then there's not so much compromise in getting a mid range second hand gaming laptop. Top end I agree are over priced but second had mid compare to desktop prices without the need to get a screen and keyboard if you really don't want them is an option.

Stock cooler on the q6600 is ok for 2.8Ghz easy, just monitor the temps ensure it does go over 70c, and both the 970 and the ssd can be taken to the new build.

If it's just the load times which are bothering you, can I suggest you save yourself a bunch of cash and add an SSD to the system? That in combination with some extra RAM would make a huge difference.

I'm not a fan of gaming laptops. They're very expensive, heavy, have no battery life and are almost completely impossible to upgrade. My personal preference would be to get something lightweight with a good battery for work, and stick to gaming on the desktop.

My main reason for sticking with the laptop was so I could come over from NL for the LAN and actually play. He's in Rotterdam I believe ;-)

Depending what you actually want/need, and what you're like wrt upgrading a laptop can work just fine for gaming.

You have to buy a good spec at the start, assume you cannot upgrade it, and accept that you will get less performance for your money than a desktop. Having said that, my experience with desktops was that upgrading often had little impact and due to advances in tech and changes in sockets etc I ended up replacing the entire thing anyway. Still cheaper than a good laptop though.

If you want to play the latest games, and/or at high resolution/settings, you may be disappointed with the laptop faster than you think.

Then it comes down to how you want to use it. If you drive everywhere then desktop probably wins, but you gain portability over a desktop, so taking it on a train a few times a year, or lugging it to a different room, or to a mate's place for a lan, is much much easier. However, if you're planning to take it to lectures or work etc daily it'll quickly become a pain.

Tough choice! Good luck :)

p.s. Whatever you get, make sure it's got an SSD!

Thanks for the advices so far.

Just to add up, I don't need to have a high end laptop/desktop. I just want the loading time to be less and less lag when joining raids (WoW).

That said, the SSD and Ram upgrade might be enough and not that expensive. However if I read correctly, my motherboard does not support ram above 4gig, so I would have to buy a new motherboard and then Id have to buy a new processor as well.... But I didn't really read into that, but im just guessing that will be the story.

You would still see a big performance hike if you migrated WoW to an SSD - plus you could migrate it to a future system if required.

new SSD and overclock your cpu.. also if you have the stock cooler, just get a decent cheap cooler.

Not sure if your motherboard supports over 4Gb but your operating system definitely don't.
