I am done with EA's big multiplayer games (battlefield, battlefront). The gameplay and personal long-term appeal don't justify the price of entry for me anymore.

Been playing the Alpha over the last couple of weeks.

It's Alpha so bear with me... Graphics - Excellent. Game play - good but it will be better (hit boxes aren't great yet).

Likes:

Tanks! - Not nearly as strong as BF3/4. Also, getting into some of them takes about 3-4 seconds.
Luftwaffe - :D - good thing is that they're aren't OP and it is actually difficult to kill from high above
Melee Kills - Bayonet Charge - By far the most fun.

Dislikes:
Hit boxes and other unfinished bits
PRICE!!
EA

I know what you're saying, there will obviously be "downloads" that will need to be purchased to continue to play all the maps or modes (it's EA after all), and strangely there isn't a premium pack available.......

BUT, when I consider the enjoyment I get from Battlefield and the amount of time I play it the cost per hour is probably less then I pay for my TV license and I definitely enjoy a bit of Battlefield more then a lot of the crap that the TV presents for us (love you Wookie xxx).

It's pre-order on CD-Keys for £31.99, plus of course unknown "add on packs" in the future, or the chance to "upgrade" to premium for another £30 I've no doubt.

I'm just a sucker for a bit of Battlefield goodness.

Nothing wrong with that lion and can completely see where you're coming from. For me it has just lost that appeal and as a result loses that cost per hour value.

Of course such arguments are flawed in gaming. I paid £15 for Ark and have nearly 300 hours in it, but £30 for Doom - 5 or 6 hours in and loving every comparatively expensive minute.

It comes down to what you think is a fair price for the experience. Doom gives me less gameplay time than Ark but is a phenomenal contained experience. Different products but both worth the price of entry to me. Battlefield imo has become a sausage factory, every game a tweaked reskin of the last. It's that combined with the repaying again and again that puts me off. I don't so much have an issue with EA tbh, I'd buy a game they put out if it was something new / appealing, I'd just take real convincing to believe BF1 provided that.

EA have announced the DLC for BF1, which you can preorder when you preorder the other half of the game. For £40!  you can get all the stuff I think should have just been part of the original game, which will itself cost £50. That's the rest of the maps, guns, skins and content.
So that's just shy of a hundred quid for one complete game spoon fed to us as DLC expansions right up until EA launch the sequel (cynical rehash of the original game asset's).
Are you going to get it? I loved the Franchise but this is, for me, an EA cynical money grab too far. £90 no thanks.

Love the games and this one looked interesting but I don't think I can get it. I brought hardline and was disappointed and battlefield 4 was fun, broken as hell when it first came out but wasn't worth the £90 for all that and the few extra maps they brought out. Your better off buying two great games, like Arma for your good shooting fun that's a bit more tactical but with mods there so much more you can do then just the base game

I think my main concern, apart from the unease (yes, I know it's hypocritical) about treating WW1 like a Michael Bay movie, is have they done anything with the gameplay formula at all?

If it's still shoot guys -> stand near a capture point -> repeat, I'm out.

I have a near completely unspoiled BF4 Uber license with a gozillion boxes of nonsense unopened and a bunch of skins and useless bling unused. It was 50 Euros and birthday money was spent on it.

I make the same mistake only twice. BC2 gave me great pleasure and BF3 and BF4 caused heartache. No more.

I was going to give the open beta a crack tonight, to give it a fair review, and EA's servers are completely down. Not just for BF, but FIFA and a whole bunch of other titles apparently.

Doesn't bode well :sideways:

Had a quick go once I got into a server - my personal impression, "Not Bad".

I've been out of FPS games other than CS for a while, but the game is fast paced and enemies go down easily. You always seem to be less than 7 seven seconds away from action since death/respawning is super quick. Sniping is good and I'm more able to be moving around quickly, usually going for one body shot and finishing with a few rounds from a pistol - this is great because I much prefer the up-close fast sniping to long range. Didn't get a chance with planes, but the land ship felt weighty and is very fun to use. I couldn't really get used to the Automatic rifle in the Assault class, but the rifle in the Medic class was good fun!

The new conquest mode means that tickets bleed from just the flags and the amount of flag each side owns - deaths/respawns play no role, meaning that there is no reason to wait for a Medic to revive you because respawning is just as fast and has no negative effect on the team.

Think I need to play some more when the servers are more stable, but at this time I'm not blown away, but I like the game.

Was gonna give it a try last night but as Tut said, no luck.  However, Blob and Puff have both been playing it.  Had a good chat with Blob on Tuesday evening about it and he thinks it's pretty good, better than BF3/4 etc.  He even went as far as saying it could be back to the good old days of BC2.  They both think they'll get it and based on what they've been telling me, i probably will to.

I stopped buying their stuff when BF4 came out and i think that was the right decision.  I know they are still the same old money grabbers but if this game does turn out to be another star then i'll go for it.  Even at £90 if i put a 1000 hrs in that's 9 pence per hour.  The last film i went to see at the flicks cost me closer to £5 per hour or put another way, Hollywood is 55 times more expensive.  I know it's not quite the same thing but ...

I got a beta code and will be downloading it tonight, if possible would love to team up with some people on it to try it out. I have been avoiding the news on it and have o let seen what you guys have been saying about it. I am looking forward to giving it ago tho if blob and puff think it's that good there must be something to it ?

I am enjoying this beta, and I will buy this game for sure. The game is fun to play with a few on teamspeak. If you play it alone, it's not that fun at all imho.

The new system with how the tickets go, I don't like that tbh.

I've put quite a few hours in now and ranked up to level 41 at the moment. From what I've played the game seems to handle really well with nice graphics and smooth gameplay. The weapons seem to be fairly well balanced however there is quite a lot more snipers than any other class, due to the large map, making acquiring stuff such as ammo and health packs difficult at times. Also, the Assault class gets anti-tank grenades which is the map anti-tank weapon at the moment however they only get SMGs which are rather underwhelming on the large map so not many people play them. This makes tanks super powerful. Tanks as a whole from what I've seen and played are extremely powerful and I think that the Light Tank is very overpowered with its Canister shells being able to one-shot infantry at a range of up to 150m sometimes. My best game was a 40-0 K/D where I managed to stay in a light tank the entire game and took little damage ever. This is definitely something that would need to be re-balanced in the full game.

Medics are the most underplayed class from what I've seen and I have only ever been revived 2 or 3 times because of there being no revive icon on a dead player's body like there has been in previous iterations of the Battlefield games. Their guns only begin to get good on Sinai Desert when you can acquire the Sharpshooter and Marksman variants of the guns which have scopes allowing you to pick off enemies at a larger distance and contest the snipers.

The three special kits that you can pick up around the map consist of an armored MG08/15 machine gun kit, a Tankgewehr anti-tank rifle kit and a Flame thrower kit. Each are very powerful but can also be countered just as easily. The MG08/15 machine gun kit allows you to spray hundreds of bullets down towards enemies and overwhelm them with firepower whilst your armor plating allows you to have far superior health to any other character in the game. The Tankgewehr is extremely effective against infantry as well as vehicles with one shot kill on infantry and on unarmored cars with a 2 shot kill on the armored Rolls Royce. It also does good chunks of damage to planes and tanks depending on their type. The flamethrower lacks range like the other two but makes up for it with a very strong weapon that will continue to burn and damage your enemies after you've stopped shooting them so you can change targets quickly making it very effective within the town around the C and D flags. The easiest way to counter these special classes are either with a bayonet charge or a melee kill which makes them each well balanced in my opinion.

I find the game very fun to play and has a great immersive feel with the great graphics and a crisp sound design making it feel authentic whilst also being fun in an arcade way. But there are big balancing issues.

Despite my low expectations, I kinda like it. It feels better for being a more low-fi, gritty kind of warfare.

That said, the shameless DLC pimping and EA/DICE's track record when launching is still putting me off. I think I will wait for the discounts, once they've patched all the bugs. The prices that EA are charging in Origin are just too high for my liking.

I'm with you Tut. The game isn't perfect (no surprise) but I'm really enjoying the gameplay. The servers are a bit ropey at the moment but they were with BF3 and BF4 at this point (still don't know why they can't get it right in the first place??).

I will go all in but will wait for a discount post launch.

I pre-ordered the standard edition at a keysite (g2play) for 42 euro. But I know some also bought it for 30 pounds at hotukdeals a while ago.
The season pass/premium will probably bought as well, but I'll wait for that as the first dlc will be in february.

Yeah I need to play a few new game but it's a very beautiful game so far and I look forward to playing it more, we will have to join up and get a 5 man squad so that we can really work together. Me and Gibbo had a few games last night and found it be a lot harder then the other game but that might just be the learning curve of the Game but I was getting the hang of it on the last game we did in the forest level where the massive train drives thought the middle of the map helping the losing team ( the enemy's ) it's a real game changer and makes it a lot more interesting. Need to play a few more games to really get the hang of it and to see what the game is really like
