Chaps
i have a house with thick walls and although the kids have no issues with the wireless internet upstairs, the wife does in our bedroom which is furthest away from the router. I have a booster at the bottom of the stairs but that is as about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
i do though in our bedroom have my main rig which is using a 20m cat 6 cable and wired directly the rooter. Now she doesn't want another cable running upstairs and i have looked at access points but i like wired!
is there a box that accepts a lan input, can convert that into wifi, but also has a lan output..( i did try to make my old home hub 5 into a switch but that hasn't worked) or do i have to face facts that i need to go wireless
thanks in advance
You've got a couple options here really.
You could sort that router out and make it act as a switch and as a AP - or any router within reason for that matter. That'll give you a single device doing what you need.
Alternatively, get yourself a small switch (like the little Netgear ones you see regularly on hotukdeals and the like) and then plug a dedicated AP into it like a UniFi AP or similar.
There are some switches out there which have AP abilities, but are likely more money than the above.
I did the same thing at church with a Belkin router I picked up for just over a fiver on ebay. 4 port wired and 802.11b (it's been in there a while).

I'm really not sure that I understand the question Sulky - am I reading it incorrectly or can you clarify please?
Hi got a lan cable up to my main computer, can I connect it into a box that will give me Wi-Fi and the ability to connect wired to it as well, using the one lan cable

So like a wireless access point with additional network connections? Like this:
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/wireless-access-points/airstation-pro-80211n-dual-band-gigabit-poe-wireless-access-point
You can get them with more network ports too, I have (iirc) a 5 port version behind the TV, so the Sky, Bluray, TV, Amazon, Chrome etc are all connected via it to my network.
Or do what Grungewart did and configure an old router to just be a WAP.
any cable router with wifi will do what you are after sulky. like this one: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-rt-ac55u-dual-band-wireless-ac1200-usb-3.0-gigabit-router-nw-091-as.html
just put your existing wired connection into the blue port and your pc in any of the yellow ports, and setup a new wifi network for upstairs.
He shoots he scores, cheers tea ill have a look when I get home
